Welcome to HOLY TRINITY,, where services have been held, in this

church, since 1863. We pray that you will feel the presence of God and

know his blessings in your life

YOU ARE INVITED TO MORNING TEA IN THE JUBILEE HALL AFTER TODAY’S SERVICE

Crèche Area: is in the transept

near the pulpit. Parents and

children are welcome to enter

by the church aisle or by the

side door.

Hymn: TiS 577

1. Come, let us to the Lord our God

with contrite hearts return;

our God is gracious, nor will leave

the desolate to mourn.

2. His voice commands the tempest

forth,

and stills the stormy wave,

and though his arm be strong to

smite

’tis also strong to save.

3. Long has the night of sorrow

reigned,

the dawn shall bring us light:

God shall appear, and we shall rise

with gladness in his sight.

4. Our hearts, if God we seek to

know,

shall know him and rejoice;

his coming like the morn shall be,

like morning songs his voice.

5. As dew upon the tender herb,

diffusing fragrance round;

as showers that usher in the spring

and cheer the thirsty ground:

6. so shall his presence bless our

souls

and shed a joyful light;

that hallowed morn shall chase

away

the sorrows of the night.

John Morison

1750–98

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven,’ says the

Lord. ‘Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I

will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ John 6.51

3

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord

your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)

4

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

Prayer of the Day

Gracious God,

you have placed within the hearts of all your children

a longing for your word and a hunger for your truth:

grant that, believing in the one whom you have sent,

we may know him to be the true bread of heaven

and the food of eternal life,

Jesus Christ our Lord,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit

be glory and honour for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: 2 SAMUEL 11.1-15 1In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent

Joab with his officers and all Israel with him; they ravaged the Ammonites,

and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. 2It happened, late

one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on

the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the

woman was very beautiful. 3David sent someone to inquire about the

woman. It was reported, ‘This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of

Uriah the Hittite.’ 4So David sent messengers to fetch her, and she came to

him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.)

Then she returned to her house. 5The woman conceived; and she sent and

told David, ‘I am pregnant.’ 6So David sent word to Joab, ‘Send me Uriah the

Hittite.’ And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7When Uriah came to him, David

asked how Joab and the people fared, and how the war was going. 8Then

David said to Uriah, ‘Go down to your house, and wash your feet.’ Uriah went

out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the

king. 9But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king’s house with all the

servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10

When they told

David, ‘Uriah did not go down to his house’, David said to Uriah, ‘You have

just come from a journey. Why did you not go down to your house?’ 11

Uriah

said to David, ‘The ark and Israel and Judah remain in booths; and my lord

Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go

to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as

your soul lives, I will not do such a thing.’ 12

Then David said to Uriah,

‘Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.’ So Uriah

remained in Jerusalem that day. On the next day, 13

David invited him to eat

and drink in his presence and made him drunk; and in the evening he went

out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to

his house. 14

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the

hand of Uriah. 15

In the letter he wrote, ‘Set Uriah in the forefront of the

hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck

down and die.’

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

7

Psalm: 14

1 Fools have said in their hearts ‘There is no God’:

they have all become vile and abominable in their doings, there is not one

that does good.

2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of Adam:

to see if there were any who would act wisely and seek after God.

3 But they have all turned out of the way, they have all alike become corrupt:

there is none that does good, no not one.

4 Are all the evildoers devoid of understanding:

who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not pray to the Lord?

5 They shall be struck with terror:

for God is with the company of the righteous.

6 Though they frustrate the poor in their hopes:

surely the Lord is their refuge.

7 O that deliverance for Israel might come forth from Zion:

when the Lord turns again the fortunes of his people, then shall Jacob rejoice

and Israel be glad.

Second Reading: EPHESIANS 3.14-21

14For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

15from whom every

family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16

I pray that, according to the

riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner

being with power through his Spirit, 17

and that Christ may dwell in your

hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18

I pray

that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the

breadth and length and height and depth, 19

and to know the love of Christ

that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of

God. 20

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish

abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21

to him be glory in the

church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 453

1. We limit not the truth of God

to our poor reach of mind,

by notions of our day and sect,

crude, partial and confined:

no, let a new and better hope

within our hearts be stirred:

the Lord has yet more light and truth

to break forth from his word.

2. Our faithful forebears searching

went

the first steps of the way;

this was the dawning, yet to grow

into the perfect day.

And grow it shall, our glorious sun

will brighter rays afford:

the Lord has yet more light and truth

to break forth from his word.

3. O Father, Son, and Spirit, send

us increase from above;

enlarge, expand all living souls

to comprehend your love;

and make us all go on to know,

with nobler powers conferred,

that you have yet more light and

truth

to break forth from your word.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 6

beginning at the 1st

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

1After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the

Sea of Tiberias. 2A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the

signs that he was doing for the sick. 3Jesus went up the mountain and sat

down there with his disciples. 4Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews,

was near. 5When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him,

Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread for these people to

eat?’ 6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to

do. 7Philip answered him, ‘Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread

for each of them to get a little.’ 8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s

brother, said to him, 9‘There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and

two fish. But what are they among so many people?’ 10

Jesus said, ‘Make the

people sit down.’ Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat

down, about five thousand in all. 11

Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he

had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the

fish, as much as they wanted. 12

When they were satisfied, he told his

disciples, ‘Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be

lost.’ 13

So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley

loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14

When the

people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, ‘This is indeed the

prophet who is to come into the world.’ 15

When Jesus realized that they

were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew

again to the mountain by himself.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]

Offertory Hymn: TiS 517

13

1. Hallelujah! sing to Jesus,

his the sceptre, his the throne;

hallelujah! his the triumph,

his the victory alone;

hark, the songs of peaceful Zion

thunder like a mighty flood:

‘Jesus out of every nation

has redeemed us by his blood.’

2. Hallelujah! not as orphans,

are we left in sorrow now;

hallelujah! he is near us,

faith believes, nor questions how;

though the cloud from sight received

him

when the forty days were o’er,

shall our hearts forget his promise,

‘I am with you evermore’?

3. Hallelujah! bread of heaven,

and on earth our food, our stay;

hallelujah! here the sinful

flee to you from day to day;

intercessor, friend of sinners,

earth’s redeemer, plead for me

where the songs of all the sinless

sweep across the crystal sea.

4. Hallelujah! King eternal,

you the Lord of lords we own;

hallelujah! born of Mary,

earth your footstool, heav’n your

throne:

you within the veil have entered,

robed in flesh, our great high priest;

you on earth both priest and victim

in the eucharistic feast.

William Chatterton Dix

1837–98

Priest: in songs of never ending praise:

15

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION

{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body,

For we all share in the one bread.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in

remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with

thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church

are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received:

(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.

(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small

part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or

(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.

Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).

The Choir sings “God is living, God is here”, J.S. Bach.

16

this blest cup of sacrifice:

Lord, your wounds our healing give;

to your cross we look and live:

you our life, O let us be
