Sentence: ‘This is the covenant I will make with them,’ says the Lord God: ‘I

will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be

their God and they shall be my people.’ Jeremiah 31.33

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration

of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The minister reads aloud the commandments.

Hear the commandments which God gave his people Israel.

1 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of slavery; you shall

have no other gods but me.

2 You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything

that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water

under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.

3 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

4 Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour and do

all you have to do, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God.

5 Honour your father and your mother.

6 You shall do no murder.

7 You shall not commit adultery.

8 You shall not steal.

9 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

10 You shall not covet anything that is your neighbour’s.

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

O God, our Redeemer,

in our weakness we have failed

to be your messengers of forgiveness and hope:

renew us by your Holy Spirit,

that we may follow your commands

and proclaim your reign of love;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

First Reading: Jeremiah 31.31-34 31

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new

covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32

It will not be

like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by

the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they

broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33

But this is the

covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says

the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts;

and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34

No longer shall

they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they

shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord;

for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Second Reading: Hebrews 5.5-14 5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was

appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have

according to the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus

offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one

who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his

reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through

what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of

eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10

having been designated by God a

high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. 11

About this we have

much to say that is hard to explain, since you have become dull in

understanding. 12

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need

someone to teach you again the basic elements of the oracles of God. You

need milk, not solid food;13

for everyone who lives on milk, being still an

infant, is unskilled in the word of righteousness. 14

But solid food is for the

mature, for those whose faculties have been trained by practice to

distinguish good from evil.

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some

Greeks. 21

They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and

said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22

Philip went and told Andrew;

then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23

Jesus answered them,

“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24

Very truly, I tell

you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just

a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25

Those who love their

life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for

eternal life. 26

Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am,

there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will

honour. 27

“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me

from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this

hour.28

Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I

have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29

The crowd standing there

heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken

to him.” 30

Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for

mine. 31

Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world

will be driven out. 32

And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw

all people to myself.” 33

He said this to indicate the kind of death he was

to die.

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We remember before God with thanksgiving the lives of Mavis Gamble

(2008) and Freddie Righton (1976) as we come to the anniversary of

their entry into your nearer presence.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith

We may by your grace receive,

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION

{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body,

For we all share in the one bread.

The choir sings the Agnus Dei

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in

remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith

with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church

are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received:

(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.

(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a

small part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or

(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.

Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
