Hymn: TiS 204

1. Come let us join our cheerful songs with angels round the throne; ten thousand thousand are their tongues, but all their joys are one.

2. ‘Worthy the Lamb that died,’ they cry, ‘to be exalted thus’; ‘Worthy the Lamb,’ our lips reply, for he was slain for us.

3. Jesus is worthy to receive honour and power divine; and blessings more than we can give, be, Lord, for ever thine.

4. Let all creation join in one to bless the sacred name of him that sits upon the throne, and to adore the Lamb.

Isaac Watts 1674–1748 alt.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever. Revelation 5.13 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Dudman)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, through your only Son you overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that we who celebrate our Lord’s resurrection, may, through the renewing power of your Spirit, rise from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Acts 9.1-9, 17-20 1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ 5 ‘Who are you, Lord?’ Saul asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. 6 ‘Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.’ 7 The men travelling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord – Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here – has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptised, 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 30:4-12 4 Sing praises to the Lord, all you his faithful ones: and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For if in his anger is havoc, in his good favour is life: heaviness may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 In my prosperity I said ‘I shall never be moved: your goodness, O Lord, has set me on so firm a hill.’ 7 Then you hid your face from me: and I was greatly dismayed. 8 I cried to you, O God: and made my petition humbly to my Lord. 9 ‘What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit: can the dust give you thanks, or declare your faithfulness? 10 ‘Hear, O Lord, and be merciful: O Lord, be my helper.’ 11 You have turned my lamentation into dancing: you have put off my sackcloth and girded me with joy, 12 That my heart may sing your praise and never be silent: O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. Second Reading: Revelation 5.6-14 6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the centre of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.’ 11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and

Page 8: HTK Pew Sheet, 10am, April 14, 2013

glory and praise!’ 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!’ 14 The four living creatures said, ‘Amen’, and the elders fell down and worshipped.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 112

1. Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

2. Of his deliverance I will boast, till all that are distressed, when learning this, will comfort take and calm their griefs to rest.

3. O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his name; when in distress to him I called he to my rescue came.

6. Fear him, you saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; if in his service you delight your wants shall be his care.

Nahum Tate 1652–1715 and Nicholas Brady 1659–1726 alt.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 21 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 1 Afterwards Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 ‘I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered. 6 He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, ‘It is the Lord,’ he wrapped his outer garment round him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred metres. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ he said, ‘you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16 Again Jesus said, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He answered, ‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Take care of my sheep.’ 17 The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed

Page 10: HTK Pew Sheet, 10am, April 14, 2013

10

my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.’ 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, ‘Follow me!’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 658

1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night; I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain; I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord...

3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame, I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts are satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord...

Final Hymn: TiS 242

1. I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun; and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth, at Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he; and I’ll lead you all where ever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John, they came with me and the dance went on:

3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame: the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die:

4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; but I am the dance and I still go on:

5. They cut me down and I leap up high, I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you as you live in me: I am the Lord of the dance, said he:
