Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

Prayer of the Day

God of the ages, you call the Church to keep watch in the world and to

discern the signs of the times: grant us the wisdom that your Spirit

bestows, so that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic word,

and complete the work you have set before us; through your Son, our

Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy

the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.’ 3 So I went

down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his

wheel. 4 The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s

hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to

him. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me:

6 Can I not do with you, O

house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the Lord . Just like the

clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7 At

one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will

pluck up and break down and destroy it, 8 but if that nation, concerning

which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the

disaster that I intended to bring on it. 9 And at another moment I may

declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant

it, 10

but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will

devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and

Second Reading: Philemon 1.7-20

7 I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love,

because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my

brother. 8 For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to

command you to do your duty, 9 yet I would rather appeal to you on the

basis of love—and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a

prisoner of Christ Jesus. 10

I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus,

whose father I have become during my imprisonment. 11

Formerly he

was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to

me. 12

I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. 13

I wanted

to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place

during my imprisonment for the gospel; 14

but I preferred to do nothing

without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary

and not something forced. 15

Perhaps this is the reason he was

separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back for

ever, 16

no longer as a slave but as more than a slave, a beloved

brother—especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh

and in the Lord.17

So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as

you would welcome me. 18

If he has wronged you in any way, or owes

you anything, charge that to my account. 19

I, Paul, am writing this with

my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even

your own self. 20

Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the

‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife

and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my

disciple. 27

Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my

disciple. 28

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit

down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete

it? 29

Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all

who see it will begin to ridicule him, 30

saying, “This fellow began to build

and was not able to finish.” 31

Or what king, going out to wage war against

another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten

thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty

thousand?32

If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a

delegation and asks for the terms of peace. 33

So therefore, none of you can

become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions. 34

‘Salt is good;

but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?35

It is fit

neither for the soil nor for the manure heap; they throw it away. Let anyone

with ears to hear listen!’

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

We give thanks for the lives of Aaron Brake, Betty Foletta, and Joan Bell

as we uphold them to your loving mercy, and we pray for all who mourn

their deaths.

We remember before God with thanksgiving the lives of

Nelle Lees (2010), David Hadwen (2002), and Marmaduke Henry-

Waring (2012), as we come to the anniversary of their entry into your

nearer presence.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION

Asylum Seeker Seminar – Sunday 15 September – 11:30 am Vicarage.

This seminar follows on from a forum conducted by the Australian

Churches Refugee Taskforce on 26 August 2013 at RMIT University.

Bishop Phillip Huggins represented that Taskforce.

St Dunstan’s Camberwell is hosting a musical afternoon on Sunday

September 15, 2-4pm in aid of Mother’s union projects. Donation $8.
