July - 2011 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Linville weather was near perfect with afternoon tem- peratures reaching the high 80’s. The only rain showers were at night and felt wonderful. The mountain laurels were in full bloom with that classic mountain beauty. Our new gathering at “The Camp” introduced six new- comers to Southern Seniors. The party was a great suc- cess as was the cocktail supper at Linville Ridge. How can you describe the seafood buffet at Eseeola Lodge except to say fantastic! Congratulations to Chuck Joye for winning the Hamill Trophy and to Chip Landon for winning the Grand Seniors Championship. Several members opted out of the Thursday Stableford at Linville to take advantage of the opportunity to play Grandfather Golf & Country Club. Mary Ann has been keeping up with the ladies sponsor- ship activity and so far this year, a total of seven ladies have received awards. We encourage each of our members to sponsor one of their friends as a new member so they can enjoy the golf and fellowship that Southern Seniors has to offer. We look forward to seeing you at The Broadmoor. As Bill said, and it bears repeating, with plenty of sunshine, warm daytime temper- atures and abundant color, it was a spectacular week in the High Country. In addition to tournament winners Chuck and Chip, Tom Metzgar won the Stableford, helped by a hole-in-one! It was his fourth, a five hybrid shot on the 173-yard sixth hole. This year the tournament ran four days with final matches on Thursday, allowing everyone to head home ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Sunday dinner at The Camp fea- tured bluegrass entertainment and our version of “Dancing With the Stars” featuring Mary Ann Jones and J.D. Kirby! Non-golfing ladies enjoyed a delightful outing to the very artsy Penland Gallery enhanced by scenic drives and con- versations with artisans and potters. Eseeola packed a deli- cious lunch-to-go for the group’s picnic. A big thank you goes to the members and ladies who are sharing Southern Seniors with their friends. Another four sponsor awards were presented to wives at Linville. Don’t forget about the drawings we’ll have at Sea Island for free 2012 tournament entries and spa-days. For every member sponsored, the sponsor and lady’s names will be entered in the drawings! Enclosed is the tournament announcement for The Colonial Challenge, a three-day event that is open to guests.
