In what has now become a tradItIon, August is the month of M-Car Day at Griot’s Garage. This year, it will be on Sunday, August 19 and the wonderful folks at Griot’s Garage will once again be our hosts. Their new facility is perfect for such an event as it provides ample space to park and display our beautiful M Cars. In addition their flagship store is worth the trip alone. M-Car Day is the one and only day in the year when M Car owners get together to celebrate and appreciate all of the wonderful BMW M Cars. Last year, we had 175 cars. About every M Car type ever produced was present: From the original M1 to the recently introduced 1M Coupe, along with some special and unique M Cars. Let’s try to break the record this year. Bring your M Car and park alongside fellow members to compare notes on modifica-tions and common maintenance items. M-Car Day is typically one of the larg-est events at Griot’s Garage. Let’s make it the largest! Please plan to roll in between 10:30 and 11 a.m. so we can direct you to the appropriate section to park your car. Like years past, we’ll park M Cars by chassis type. We’ll also have a section for regular chassis that have had M Power engine transplants.

Here is a rough agenda for the day:•Griot’sGaragewillprovideeach

MOTOR SPORTSwe are at our second track event of our chapter’s track season, making this a good time to both reflect back and look forward. We’ve had one event at Pacific Raceway in 2012 on April 13. The event was a perfect day for a driving event, the weather was beautiful and the track was dry; all good. The great weather made it perfect for driving your Ultimate Driving Machine, not something to ever take for granted, especially that time of the year. There were no “incidents” which means every-body went home happy. The Car Control Clinic (CCC) was full with thirty plus enthusiastic participants new to our sport.TheHighPerformanceDrivingSchool(HPDS)wasnotcompletely full but very close. Let’s see how we doonournextevent,onJune22at Pacific Raceways. Also our usual terrific instructor performed—professionally, proficiently and personably. The students were great—well behaved, attentive and willing to learn. We all had a great time! We will hopefully repeat our past successthreemoretimesin2012.OnJune 22, Friday, you can come out and drivethesametrackinHighPerformance Driving School and Car Control Classes at Pacific Raceway. August 24, Friday, wewillhaveourfirsttrackevent(HPDSonly) at the new track in Shelton, Wash-ington, “The Ridge.” I spent a day on the track with several of our instructors and we all agree the track is awesome to drive and has a great crew to help us put on many more track days in the future. We are very fortunate to have the new Shelton track in the northwest, so sign up now because this event will fill up early!

JoIn us for the 32nd annual BMW SeattleConcoursd’EleganceandHeri-tage Picnic at Cedar River Park. The show, along with music, arts & crafts and many other family activities will all be part of the Renton River Days Festival event. So mark your calendar for Sunday, July 29 and come out and be part of the history and beauty that make up the heritage of BMW. This will be a special day for BMW enthusiasts of all levels to come together and enjoy each other’s camaraderie and a fine display of BMWs.

Featured BMW: 6 Series LineageThe entire lineage of the 6 Series will be honored at this year’s show. Whether it’s

the classic E9 to the newly released F13 as part of the Feature Car line-up, or the 327 to the 2000 Fabulous Vintage collec-tion, all these gems will take center lawn as part of the BMW 6 Series Lineage.

ClassesThere will be two classes to choose from. A judged class with beautifully etched glass trophies, and a non-competitive display class. Both classes will be eligible for the coveted People’s Choice Award.

JuDGED CLaSSCars are judged in three major areas: exterior, interior(includingtrunk)andengine bay. The underside of the car

is not judged. A three-member team will judge each car. Their independent results are then totaled to determine a score for each judged entry. This process is designed to be as fair and objective as possible. For class competition there are bonus points for mileage, which evens out the competition for high versus low mileage cars. The top BMWs from each class are lined up for a final review by a three-judge team to determine the Best in Show Award, presented by BMW Seattle. Previous scores are not consid-ered as the judges choose the cleanest, most dazzling BMW on the lawn. Cars are judged on cleanliness and condition only, and not on originality. To participate in the judged class, Club membership is required in BMW CCA, BMW ACA or Canadian BMW CCBC. Membership information and judging criteria are both available on the Club’s website, and will also be available at the show.

DiSPLay CLaSSThe Display Class is a terrific way to take part in the show for those who choose not to compete but want to show off their pride and joy. Just clean it up a bit, and you’re good to go! Both judged and display class cars will be parked together according to class category.

Show SponsorsA special thanks goes to our Premiere Sponsor, BMW Seattle. Without their very generous contributions year after year, the show would not be possible. Be sure to check out their display. Also, we want to thank Griot’s Garage and South Lake European for their contributions to the show.

8 ZüNDFOLGE July 2012

the show Is called concours d’elegance, French for “contest of elegance.” We don’t get too compulsive on authenticity, but you will see some awfully clean cars at our annual homage to BMW’s best. And what better model within the BMW pantheon to be fea-tured at a Contest of Elegance than the 6 Series? BMW Mobile Tradition’s own book on these cars is titled “The Perfect Line” and subtitled “BMW Coupes— A Tradition of Elegance.” What we’re featuring this year is allthreegenerationsofthebig, sexy 6 Series Coupes. Just for good measure, we’re also including the E9 Coupes, the predecessor to the 6 Series and one of the loveliest BMWs ever made. Concours d’Elegance, indeed!

The ancestryBMW’s history of big coupes goes back: way back. The first of the line was the 327 and 327/28, the later designating a 327 with the more powerful engine of the contemporary 328 sports racing car.

Concours d’Elegance Featured Car: The 6 SeriesThe 327 was built from 1937 to 1941, thewarshorteningitsrun.Only1,396327s were built, counting both coupes andcabriolets.Only569327/28sinbothcoupe and convertible form were built. All were built at BMW’s Eisenach plant. The 327 had the flowing fender lines typical of the 1930s and were often complementedbytwo-toneexteriorpaint. While the 328 was a Spartan sportsracingcar,the327wasaluxuri-ous touring car. A2-literinlinesix-cylinderenginepowered the 327. The smooth straight sixwasaBMWtraditionthatstartedin1933 with the 303, the car also sported the first kidney grills. Both traditions would last for decades. And like many coupes, convertible versions were also built and also very popular. After the cessation of hostilities, the Eisenach plant was in Eastern Germany, controlled by the Soviets. The plant resumed making BMWs including 327s. The real BMW Company in Munich protested and the Eisenach factory

became the Eisenach Motor Works and a few more EMW 327s were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Thenextmodelinthelineofbigbeautiful coupes was the BMW 503 built from 1956 to 1959. The 503 was built in both coupe and convertible forms. It was built during the same period as the much more famous BMW 507. Albrecht Goertz designed both the 503 and 507 while under contract to BMW. Both models had aluminum V8 engines and shared most of the other running gear and suspension components. As the 328 tended to overshadow the 327, the 507 overshadowed the 503, but in both cases, the dowdy, unflashy sister was a beauty too, albeit more subtle. Alas, the production runs for both the 503 and 507 were terribly short, partially because BMW lost money on every one and mostly because BMW’s overall financial situation was precarious. These cars were rare when new and are even rarer today. In the end only 273 coupes and 139 convertibles were built.

July 2012 ZüNDFOLGE 9

The successor to the 503 was another BMW beauty: the 3200 CS, having the first use of the Coupe Sport designation. The V8 engine was used again but this time the styling was by Bertone. The 1500, a new class was introduced in 1961 andfeaturedtheHofmeisterKink, theforward bend in the C-pillar. Bertone adopted this in his design for the 3200 CS. It enhanced an already beautiful car. Bertone also built the bodies for BMW, by hand, and the quality was awful. The production run, from 1962 to 1965, totaled only 603 units. A prototype convertible was built—a beauty—but it was not put into production. In the early 1960s BMW was finally finding its footing with the Quandt family recapitalizing the company and bringing in competent management. The success of the 1500 was followed up bythenextinthelineofBigCoupes:the 2000 C and 2000 CS. The design was donein-housebyWilhelmHofmeister,BMWDirectorofDesign.Oftenmis-takenly called the E9, the 2000 C/CS is actually Type 120 in the old BMW proj-ect numbering scheme. Total production was 13,691. The 2000 C/CS had a number of shortcomings. It was underpowered with only a 2-liter four-cylinder engine. The build quality was rather poor; it wasbuiltbyKarmannandrustcamefactory-installed. It had wraparound

headlights that made the car, well, homely. But this ugly duckling would soon become a swan.

E9 CoupesMost of the shortcomings of the 2000 C/CS were addressed in the E9 Coupes built from 1968 to 1975. The wrap-around headlights were dispensed with; they were replaced with quad headlights that became a BMW signature. The rest of the body needed nothing as this one change transformed the coupe into a future classic. The change from four cylinderstosixhelpedmakethecoupea reasonable performer too. The rust issue, well, it remained to bedevil owners for-evermore. There was a 2.5-liter version in Europe but the U.S. got the 2800 CS and later the 3.0 CS, while Europe got the fuel injected 3.0 CSi. The lightweight CSL—Coupe Sport Light—was the most desirable. And for racing purposes, a CSL with lots of aerodynamic add-ons made for a car that was less pretty but was so outlandish that it became a legend as “The Batmobile.” A nice one will run you $150,000 today. The total run of E9s of all types was 30,546.

6 Series, First GenerationThe successor to the E9 was the first generation 6 Series, as BMW went to a new model naming system, one that returned to the three-digit model

numbers used in the 1930s. The 6 Series was introduced in spring 1976 as part of a new model offensive that included introduction of the 3, 5 and 7 Series in a short period of time. While most BMW models have a seven year lifespan, the E24 6 Series was sold for a remarkable fourteen years, from model years 1976 through 1989. The really amazing part is that the 6 series styling looked good for that whole time span. The big BMW coupes have always been grand tourers. The 6 Series was all that. The designer of the E24 was Paul Bracq, the chief designer at BMW at the time. The early 6 Series bodies were builtatKarmann, continuingatradition of poor quality. These Big Coupes are in chronological order, from lower left and then alternating between the front and back rows while moving right: 327 (red and black), 503 (red), 3200CS Bertone (white), 3.0CS (white), E24 6 Series (silver), E63 6 Series (black) and F12 6 Series (red). All posed in front of the renovated BMW Museum and the four-cylinder headquarters building.

The first post-war big coupe was not a sales success. The 503 had a short run that coincided with the 507.

The 2000CS would soon be transformed into the classic E9, but the four-cylinder engine and those headlights didn’t make for a winner.

The 3200 CS Bertone is often confused with the 503. Note the Bertone’s more prominent kidney grills.

The E63 6 Series was based on the Z9 concept car of 1999. It was a radical change from the past.

The E24 6 Series had the longest run of any modern BMW automobile: fourteen years from 1976 to 1989.

The E64 was the convertible version of the E63 coupe and looked good from any angle.

The F12 has a less fussy rear than its predecessor and returns to the more elegant styling of the pre-Bangle era.

Concours d’Elegance Featured Car: The 6 SeriesThe HiatusThe successor to the E24 was the E31 8 Series. BMW made the decision to go up market in terms of size, price and luxury.Whilethe8Serieswasbuiltfrom1989 to 1999, it never achieved much commercial success. That’s probably for a number of reasons including its weight (heavier than the contemporary 7 Series) and price.

6 Series, Second GenerationBMW introduced an all-new 6 Series in 2003 (as a 2004 model), the E63. Thiswasfollowedthenextyearwithaconvertible version, the E64. Initially, only a V8 engine was offered but later asix-cylinderwasintroducedfornon-U.S. markets. In late 2005, the M6 models were added in both coupe and convertible form. Power came from a V10 engine shared with the M5. While the 6 Series shared many components with the contemporary 5 and 7 Series, in the 6 Series, the empha-sis was on performance. Pricing rivaled the 7 Series and M6’s had sticker prices inexcessof$100,000.Thiscertainly ensuredexclusivity. The styling of the second generation 6 Series is based on the 1999 Z9 concept car.AdrianvanHooydonkdesignedthe Z9 while Chris Bangle was director ofBMWgroupdesign.VanHooydonkwould later become Bangle’s successor inthetopdesignjob.VanHooydonkadapted his own concept car design to the production E63 and E64. You might read on the internet somewhere that the 6 Series was designed by Bangle but

Bangle was director of design; he didn’t do any specific vehicle designs during his tenure at BMW. In any case, the new 6 had the long hood, short rear deck proportions of the old E24 and of all of BMW’s big coupes. But the E63/64 took the performance to a level that could only be dreamed of by E24 fans. At the same time, the E63/64isanextremelyluxuriouscaranda grand tourer in the BMW tradition. The E63/64 was produced from 2003 through 2010.

TheexteriordesignerisNader Faghihzadeh, who penned the coupe, cabrio and upcoming Gran Coupe. The Gran Coupe, the third member of the 6 Series, will be the BMW entry in the “four-door coupe” market and will compete with the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7. The 6 Series’ interior designer is Christian Bauer. In BMW’s design process,theexteriorandinteriordesign-ers work together to create harmony between the inside and outside of the vehicle. This is particularly important for the convertible. Current engines for the 6 Series areeitheranin-linesixoraV8.Thisgeneration’s M6 gets a V8; the previous generation’s V10 is now a part of BMW history.

What has been the pace of progress over three generations of 6 Series? Let’s compare the M6, the top performer. For the E24 M6 the top speed was 155 mph and the zero to 60 mph time was 6.8 seconds. For the current M6 the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. But the zero to 60 time is now 4.2 seconds! And this is for a car that weighs over 4,200 pounds. Expectthetypicalseven-yearlifefor the F12/13 with a mid-life “impulse” of some styling changes and technical upgrades. In the meantime we’ll see the Gran Coupe in showrooms very soon. We can also look forward to the fourth generation 6 Series in about 2018, continuing the tradition of BMW’s big, beautiful coupes.

But the E63/64 took the performance to a level that could only be dreamed of by E24 fans.

6 Series, Third GenerationThe third generation 6 Series was introduced in 2011 as a 2012 model. The coupe is known as the F12 and the convertible is the F13. The convertible remains a fabric top despite the trend to folding hardtops. The design of the F12/F13 is clearly evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Proportions remain mostly unchanged but the somewhat controversial rear end of the E63/64 has been cleaned up and there is a trend back to more classic BMW styling, styling reminis-cent of pre-Bangle BMWs. The design brief for the car was “athletic, elegant and modern.”

Four races already?

at thIs poInt, we have only closed out the first month of the 2012 ICSCC racing season but it was a very busy month! With a total of four races in the books thus far, the 14-race season is well under way and the early results are rather surprising. In recent years, there has been a recurring theme; a single driver tends to dominate the top podium spot at each race and the potential end results of the season start to become apparent. This year, however, each race weekend is showcasing a different winner with no single driver showing early dominance. I am not all that surprised by this curios-ity given the level of development all thePRO3drivershavebeenthroughinitsten-yearexistence.Everyrace,everytest day, it seems a few more tenths of a second are found at each track. In many cases, those “secrets” to those tenths of a second are readily shared amongst the rest of the drivers and hopefully, every-one benefits. That has created increased competition at the pointy end of the fin-ishing order and no one is complaining!

Portland international Raceway, May 4/5TheRoseCityOpenerkickedofftheseason in Portland as is tradition and the racers were met with fabulous weather andbigstartinggrids.Withtwenty-sixPRO3carsregistered,itwasquicklyrealized that no one would be able to coast to an easy victory with this group and anything was possible. The opening race saw the return of a few past cham-pions, Jeff Van Lierop, Caelin Gabriel, and Dan Gavrila, as well as the addition ofseveralnew-to-PRO3racers(experi-enced racers and novices alike). Atotaloftwenty-fivePRO3carswere registered, with twenty-four taking the green flag on Sunday. David Beagle hadanearlyexitfromtheeventduetodamage received while participating in the Saturday one-hour endurance race. With the race underway, it didn’t take but the first few laps to see some attrition in

The PRO3 Lineweather creating less than ideal traction conditions on Sunday—just in time for the main event. With the grid positions set during the dry Saturday qualifying session, there was very little to be gained going out for Sunday’s qualifying sessions. Unfortunately, Bob “Beef” Wellington spunatTheKinkandendedhisweek-end up against the wall on driver’s left on the front straight. Caelin Gabriel up-ended his car in turn 5B during the Group 5 EIP race and that left thePRO3griddowntotwenty-onecarstaking the green for the Group 1 race. Conditions were scary-nasty out there! You might even go so far as to say, “The seas were angry that day!” with as much standing water as there was along the front straight. Visibility was nil and tension was high. In the end, thePRO3grid(andGroup1ingeneral)had a nearly flag-free race with no seri-ous incidents reported. The podium lineup included Dan Gavrila in the top position, Andrew Newell in second and Rick Edwards in third.

the ranks. Dan Gavrila elected to retire earlyafterexperiencingmechanical issues;RyanHieronymusandRick Edwards made contact in turn 7 and both retired as a result. The remaining grid kept racing full tilt and for thirty minutes, the top five finishers were nose-to-tail lap after lap of the two-mile course and those positions changed frequently during the race. There were many other races just as tight throughout the grid and the spectators had an eyeful keeping track of the position changes. Ultimately, Jeff Van Lierop edged out Caelin Gabriel for the win (by a fender!) with James Colborn in third place.

Pacific Raceways, May 19/20As is tradition in ICSCC, the second race of the season was held in Seattle. And, as is also tradition for this race, the weather was less than cooperative! “a company Is lIke a human beIng. As long as it goes in for sports, it is fit, well-trained, full of enthusiasm and per-formance.” These were the words of Robert A. Lutz, BMW AG Board Member Sales, back in 1972. They were the words christening the youngest subsidiary of BMW AG at the time, BMWMotorsportGmbH.TodaythecompanyiscalledBMWMGmbH.Butitisjustasfit,well-trained,fullofenthusiasmand performance as it was 40 years ago. The early 1970s were the dawn of a new age for BMW: A new, young Board of Management under Eberhard von Kuenheimhadsetouttostrategicallypowerandpursuetheongoing success of the Company. This included the construc-tion of a new head office—the legendary BMW Four-Cylinder —as well as the establishment of BMW’s own in-house Sports Division. Quoting Robert A. Lutz once again: “With sports always being a driving force at BMW, also while the Company was developing dynamically in the business world, it was only obvious at this point that we should concentrate and consoli-date our activities in motor sport.”

Indeed, demandanduntappedopportunitiesexceededthepotentials and capacities of the former Sports Department by far. The BMW 1800 TI and 2000 TI, as well as the entire 02 Series, were the most popular competition cars winning one race after the other. But BMW itself was able to meet only a fragment of the overall demand, the vast majority of cars being prepared, run and sold by tuning companies. Since the mid-1960s, BMW had also been involved in Formula 2—and in the years to come hardly a team anywhere was able to enter this Formula successfully without BMW’s high- performance power units. Countless racing wins and Euro-pean Championships by BMW dominated the scene.

Björn Waldegaard and Achim Warmbold were hired by the Company as rally drivers. The new company was able to move into its own building after just a few months, with the racing workshop and racing engine production shop, toolmaking and the engine dyna-mometer all being installed in the immediate vicinity of BMW’s Munich Plant on a site measuring more than 8,000 square metres in Preussenstrasse. This is where the sports machines for 1973 saw the light of day: A 950-kilo 2002 pow-ered by a two-litre four-valve four-cylinder for rally racing, withmaximumoutputof240hp,aswellasanewtouringcoupé described by Jochen Neerpasch in the early days in very clear words: “Since we saw 1973 as our kick-off year, we didn’texpecttowinthisEuropeanChampionshiprightaway.”The model designation of the new car was 3.0 CSL. Even back then, in the very early years, BMW attached the utmost importance to optimisation of the man/machine interface. And there were even plans back then for similar courses to be offered to “non-professionals”. Since 1977 these courses have been called BMW Driver Training.

And it was not only the 3.0 CSL coupé that hit the headlines from the very beginning: For the first time a complete racing team from the car transport vehicle to the key tag came in the same design. These were the three blue, violet and red colour stripes on a brilliant white background characterising the look of BMW Motorsport to this very day. The CSL coupés in these colours soon known to everybody intheworldofmotorracingwereunbeatable.Hans-JoachimStuck and Chris Amon brought home the Touring Car Grand PrixattheNürburgringintheirveryfirstattempt.BMW was the overall winner of the Touring Car Category in the 24HourRaceatLeMans.

But the BMW 3.0 CSL was a pioneer not only in its colour design, but also through a whole range of significant technical innovations: First, it was poweredfrom1973byBMW’sfirst-everfour-valvesix-cylinder. Second, it featured a prototype anti-lock braking system from 1974, long before this innovation became stan-dard technology in the BMW 7 Series. BMWMotorsportGmbHmaintaineditssuccessfulprocess of development also in Formula 2: Fifty of BMW’s two-litre four-valve engines went to March, subsequently winning 11 out of 16 races. In 1973 Jean Pierre Jarier, powered by a BMW engine, brought home the European Formula 2 Championship at the wheel of his March and the engine dominated the two-litre category consistently for nearly ten years, with Patrick Depailler (1974), Bruno Giacomelli (1978), Marc Surer (1979) and Corrado Fabi (1982) winning the European title in their BMW-powered March Formula 2

racingcars.Otherteamswereequallythrilledbythistwo-litrefour-cylinder built in a production run of more than 500 units, most of which developing over 300 hp. In1975,BMWMotorsportGmbHshifteditsfocustotheother side of the Atlantic: Now the Company concentrated on the US IMSA Series, seeking in the process to present the letters “BMW” to a larger US market. When the year came to an end, the number of US citizens who knew that BMW stood for “Bavarian Motor Works” had increased considerably—and this was no surprise with BMW winning the Manufacturer’s Category in the IMSA Championship.

1976: The “driver’s school” becomes BMW Driver Training.On3February1976,BMW’sBoardofManagementdecidedtoentrustBMWMotorsportGmbHwithyetanothertask: to professionalise an activity still referred to at the time as a “driver’s school”. The original brief given to the Management of the Company was to organise 15 courses a year with 20 participants each at BMW’s test facilities, as well as five additional courses with 100 participants in each case on race tracks—that is a total of 800 participants a year. “As the Company responsible throughout BMW for all motor sport activities,BMWMotorsportGmbHwishestopromotethedriver in his performance as part of the man/machine system.” This was the key statement in the initial publication of BMW Driver Training—and it remains valid to this very day. From the very beginning one of the main features of BMW Driver Training was to provide the cars for the partici-pants to use—and this philosophy remains unchanged to this very day. This means that all participants have the same cars in technical terms and need not worry about tyre wear and their own cars. To implement this philosophy in practice, the Company established its own small fleet of BMW 320i’s, at thetimetheidealcarfortrainingwithitsmaximumoutputof 125 hp. All of these cars featured a specially tuned suspension, a limited-slip differential with 40 per cent locking action, and a bucket seat for the driver. So BMW’s first “team” in Driver Training was certainly well prepared. The BMW Driver Training curriculum was all set and ready to go following the first test courses at the Manching Military Airfield near Ingolstadt, Rauno Aaltonen officially signing up as BMW’s first chief instructor on 13 January 1977. In fact, Aaltonenappliedhisexperiencenotonlyonthetrack, butalso through the only book on driver training published at

the time: “Revolution at the Wheel”—a unique book clearly describing the course and its curriculum, and therefore sold out almost overnight. To this very day, the “Flying Finn” passes on his unique skills to BMW drivers, although the focus has now for a long time been on greater safety. Soon making their appearance: The first “extra-hot” road-going BMW.Well into the second half of the 1970s, BMW Motorsport GmbHfocusedalmostexclusivelyontheconstructionof racing cars. The new BMW 320 entered in Group 5, for example,continuedtheoutstandingsuccessofthe02Series.But many a good customer—not just racing drivers, but also BMW enthusiasts in everyday life—were also looking for M Power on regular roads and this is how the first “hot” 5 Series came into being from 1974: the 530, 533i, 535i. Indeed, these cars were superior to their production counterparts not only in terms of their engines, but also in their suspension and brake technology receiving the special attention of the engineersatBMWMotorsportGmbH.“Regular”saloonsalmost “normal” at first sight thus became the first high- performance four-seaters revolutionising the world of the sports car through their sophisticated technology. Initially these were built and sold only in very small numbers, but soon the performance philosophy became increasingly popular. By 1980, 895 units based on the first 5 Series had been purchased.

Dear Puget Sound Region Member,

after much prayerful and profound consIderatIon, I am writing to tell you that I am resigning as Zündfolge Editor-in-Chief, of BMW Car Club of America, Puget Sound Region. This will be my last Zündfolge issue as Editor-in-Chief. Needless to say, this is not an easy decision. I have come to the realization that I am unable to con-tinue to provide the type of leadership needed at this time. I’ve reached a place in which the energy I applied to the position is better suited to other endeavors. For well over thirty years I have served the board of directors for the Club, and for over twenty years I have had the privilege of serving the membership as the Zündfolge Editor-in-Chief. In 1977, I drove my first BMW, a 1977 320i, off the dealer lot with only a few miles on the odometer. I joined the BMW ACA Puget Sound Region (now a CCA chapter) and also joined BMW CCA as a member not affiliated with a local chapter, this same year. I volunteered on the Zündfolge staff then and joined the board as the treasurer the following year, in 1978. I have served numerous board positions over the last thirty years and will miss serving you the members. I have been part of the Zündfolge as it grew from a smaller format to what it is now. When I started volunteering on the Zündfolge staff, we hand stapled the issues together and when we acquired an electric stapler for the job we consid-eredthatahightechtool!Wedidlayoutonwaxedgridsand

We grew from just few con-tributors to many contributors. Thank you to all of you who have contributed to the Zündfolge. We have been blessed with the opportunity of producing a high quality monthly publication, on time and within bud-get for numerous years. With the help of a great volunteer staff, it went smoothly each month in our short turnaround time. Some members on the board of directors want to take the Zündfolge in a different direction. This makes it a good transition time for me to move on to other endeavors. Please consider attending the board meetings and getting involved in the Club. I look forward to seeing you at future Club events!
