There are many reasons for us to take this initiative now. The reason we are calling this experiment “City Church” is because we desire to follow God’s call to “seek the peace of the city” in which we live (Jeremiah 29:7-11). God’s plans for our welfare often come through God’s blessing of our communities, neighborhoods, and families. This is true even when the culture around us sometimes seems “foreign” to us and even antagonistic toward life with God. One purpose for this Sunday evening group will be to bless our city together through service and prayer. Participants will be presented weekly with opportunities to join together with like-minded friends to complete service projects for our community and to include our city regularly in their prayers. Another reason for this new worship service is our desire to make and form new disciples of Jesus Christ. As times change, technologies change and cultural norms change. Though the Good News we share is the same, sometimes our old ways of worship make it a challenge for new people to hear and believe the gospel and to join with us in worship. Sometimes we must embrace innovative forms of worship to meet the needs of our changing culture. City Church

Our Session has authorized a summer experiment with a new Sunday evening worship service, July 13-August 17, 5-6:00 pm in the Chapel. Participants will be presented weekly with opportunities to join together with like-minded friends to complete service projects for our community and to include our city regularly in their prayers. Another reason for this new worship service is our desire to make and form new disciples of Jesus Christ. As times change, technologies change and cultural norms change. Though the Good News we share is the same, sometimes our old ways of worship make it a challenge for new people to hear and believe the gospel and to join with us in worship. new opportunities for fellowship and community. Participants will be invited to share life together, especially “breaking bread together” regularly. They will also be challenged to practice mutual care and accountability and to form small groups that meet especially for this purpose (Acts 2:42-47). There is not time or space here to address all the many reasons for taking this initiative now, so I encourage you to “visit” and participate in this worship service to decide for yourself whether this is something God is calling you to do.

Awesome Church

Finally, I must express a heart-felt thank you once again for the thousands of kindnesses you have extended to me and my family over the past six months. I was overwhelmed by the response of so many people who offered their help and showed up with trucks and strong backs on May 23 to move all of our stuff into our new house. So many of you have been so kind and generous that we cannot even begin to name and thank you all. You are a wonderful congregation and we are blessed by the opportunity to serve you. Thank you for being such an awesome church!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Greg

~ VBS REPORT 2014~

120 children participated in Vacation Bible School entitled “ Wilderness Escape: Where God Guides & Provides” .

Each day, children…

►experienced making Bible time crafts in an Israelite tent city

►heard the Good News in Moses’ tent

►spent time in a tribe setting with their leader

►had a Bible time snack

►played outdoor games that connected with the daily Bible point

►enjoyed some live animals

►gathered for worship and singing.

The children took on a Global Mission called Operation Kid-to-Kid where they learned the value of clean water. They brought in over $200 for this project which will be sent to India. Thank you to all the volunteers ( both adults and youth) that led tribes, worked in the tent city, prepared snacks, decorated and undecorated the church, and contributed financially. Moses (Leo Adames) led the way! Your contribution to the development of our young children is greatly appreciated! Snapshots of some of the children & volunteers are in this newsletter.

~ MEMBERSHIP TRANSFERS ~

Richard and Jennie Swift transferred to Madison Street United Methodist Church, Clarksville.

~ NEW MIDWEEK “DISCIPLE” CLASSES BEGIN IN MID-AUGUST ~

What is the "Disciple" curriculum? It is a weekly in-depth study and discussion group that gives participants a

comprehensive understanding of the entire Bible and how it all fits together. According to Jesus, a disciple is a

learner, believer, follower, and proclaimer. The goal of the Disciple study is to develop strong Christian leaders

who have a good grasp of the foundations of their faith. Or, as the Apostle Paul put it, "to equip the saints for the

work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ." (Ephesians 4:12)

This is a high-commitment/high pay-off venture beginning with weekly 2 hour sessions, mid-August through

May. The homework required takes approximately an hour and a half of study time each day. Rev. Ken

Gillespie, of our own congregation, is the teacher. If you would like to be part of this venture, contact Pastor

Greg or Maggie Brown, our interim Director of Christian Education.

First Presbyterian members who experienced these classes in the past two years are: Disciple I - Leo Adames,

Margaret Adames, Gail Hudson, Diane Miner, Steve Miner, Brian Price, and Elaine Price; Disciple II - Arland

Batson, Don Beck, Diane Bowland, Jennifer Ellis, Nancy Gillespie, Carol Shippen, and Marcia Williams. They

would be glad to tell you of their experience.

The deadline to sign up is August 10. Ken will have a sign up at a

table in the corner of the fellowship hall during the 2nd Sunday lunch,

on August 10.

~ MISSION TRIP OPPORTUNITY ~

Our denominational PW group is working with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance group to

organize a mission trip August 3-9 to New York City to aid in recovery from Hurricane Sandy. This

will be a hands-on experience, with jobs from clerical to heavy construction. Men and women are

encouraged to participate. Room and board will be provided at First Presbyterian, Jamaica, Queens,

at a cost of $220 per person. We hope to get air tickets for $275/$300 per person. July 10 is the

deadline to register . If interested contact Ann Waddle, [email protected] or 931-624-2597.

~ SUMMER SUNDAY

SCHOOL ~

Adult Sunday School will

continue as normal (except the

Gospel Class) during the summer

months. The Gospel Class will

adjourn for the summer and

reconvene after Rally Day.

Children & Youth Sunday

School will meet in the Seekers

classroom on the 2nd floor. Liz

Thomas will be leading/teaching

using Veggie Tales and Noah’s Park

curriculum.

~ ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE~

When folks began to gather and discuss a mission trip being coordinated at the denomination level by Presbyterian Women and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, we realized we need to have a missions committee at First Presbyterian Church, Clarksville, Tennessee! Over the past few years, several members of our church family have individually participated in mission work around the world – from Clarksville to Haiti to Africa to Oklahoma! Our church helps our local neighbors with food baskets and FUEL packets! Our youth have traveled to West Virginia and other areas to help build and re-build. Members of our church family are also active in the local Salvation Army, Nashville Cares, Red Cross, Loaves & Fishes, and many other organizations. While our Service Committee serves a specific, local purpose, our church is active in other local, national, and international endeavors! With a missions committee, church leaders can help coordinate our efforts to support the work of our church family. We need interested people to serve! If you are interested, please contact Pastor Greg Glover at church or Ann Waddle at [email protected] or 931.624.2597. We hope the committee can have an organizational meeting in August – after the return of our group’s travels to New York to help with Hurricane Sandy Relief!

MEMORIAL GARDEN

The Memorial Garden is available for any member of FPC and, with

session approval, for members of their immediate family. The

garden is administered by The Memorial Garden Committee which

has been appointed by the session.

A memorial plaque has been installed near the entrance to the

garden, adjacent to the stairwell by fellowship hall. A fee of $600

will be paid at time of application. This fee is to cover the costs of

the bronze plaque to include the name with birth and death years

of the deceased; a page in the Memorial Book; and maintenance of

the garden. Arrangements for a memorial service should be made

with the ministerial staff. Brochures are available outside the

church office.

[The First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden has been designed to minister to the needs of

members and their families by providing an appropriate and carefully maintained consecrated

site for the interment of ash remains. The Memorial Garden is intended to be a place for church

members to reflect and linger individually or gather as a group. A renewed understanding of the

opportunity to celebrate eternal life and memorialize the worth of individuals has guided the

development of this garden. The garden has been designed to close the circle of ministry from birth

to death while providing a continual physical relationship with the church.]
