Thoughts from the President… Well, summer has arrived! And we all are a lot busier in our lives these days for sure! I want to encourage all of you to slow down and truly enjoy our environment. As our guest speaker Melody Randol (who lives in Colorado) stated at our Program this month, “She just loves our trees!” I agree that we all are very blessed to live in such a beautiful place!!! PROGRAM MEETING

July 14

10:00 am Our very own Mary Klein is presenting our July

program. She will, among other things, be talking to

us about hexagon quilts and showing us some of the

quilts she has made using hexagons. Mary has

experimented with incorporating both small and large

hexagons in her quilts. She will be showing us many

examples of the pattern variations when using

hexagons in quilts. Mary took a knitting class many

years ago, before she started quilting, from Kaffe

Fawcett who has continued to influence her quilting

and her use of color. His advice to her was “don’t

overthink” when quilting. Mary joined the MMQG in

1998, with limited quilting experience. She took her

first class from Crys Kyle from whom she learned

about quilting and quilting techniques. She has taken

a few classes from Jean Wells but has primarily done

her own thing. She belongs to the Meadow Muffins

group which is an offshoot from our guild and quilts

with a Sit ‘n Sew group, also a small group of guild

members who have been meeting regularly for a

number of years.

Mary has asked that guild members who have

hexagon quilts to bring them in for a show and tell to

get our group excited about making a hexagon quilt

for our Sisters Quilt Challenge. The quilts have a

very early deadline so we are needing to get started

now.

Sunriver Quilt Show Coming Up Soon

The 27th annual quilt show will be here before we

know it. Plans are coming together.

I hope every member of our guild will plan to show

one or more quilts.

Carole Elsbree and Ruth Kinane are asking for

sponsor quilts. They will be hung in businesses in

Sunriver and the Business Park. They will be hung

for the month of July.

There will be special exhibits (they are quilts that

have been made by our guild members at workshops

or small group challenges).

Patty Gates will be at the meetings. She is still

looking for volunteers to help.

We will be accepting credit cards for sales this year.

If you have an iPad or cell phone and are willing to

help for a few hours, please let Barb Lowery know

([email protected])

As a guild member, you can sell your quilts at our

show. You determine the price.

Bazaar Needs

The bazaar committee needs the following items for

our quilt show in August.

Grocery bags, laundry drying racks, ladders with 4-6

rungs, lite-weight rectangular folding tables.

Items should be brought to quilt

intake. Questions: Kay Case 541-330-9587 or

[email protected]

Volunteers

Volunteers still needed for the Sunriver Quilt

Show. As Hostesses and working at the Bazaar for 2

to 2-1/2 hour shifts.

Call Patty Gates 541-382-4828 or email at

[email protected]

Quilt Intake and Return The intake committee will be accepting quilts before

and after the MMQ education meeting on July 28th

at SHARC. Mary Klein, Michelle McMicken, and

Michele Mullenberg are on the committee.

Take in of quilts will be July 30th and 31st from 12-4

in the Sunriver Mall in Building 13, the same location

as last year.

You can get the forms from committee members at

the next meetings or from an email that Louise has

sent out. The form is available on our website

(www.mtnmeadowquilters.org). It is helpful if you

bring the form all filled out.

All quilts submitted must have a label.

When you bring in your quilts, someone will assist you

and write up a receipt for you. You will get a copy and

you must bring in the receipt to pick up your quilts.

Pick-up will begin when all the quilts are back in the

quilt show office and they have been sorted. It

starts around 4:30-5 pm.

People who have purchased quilts will be allowed to

pick those up first. Please be considerate of our

guests. Bazaar Workshops Thank You

There is a wonderful selection of items to be

purchased at the bazaar this year.

Our special thanks go to Sew Many Quilts and

Homestead Quilts for hosting some of our

workshops. Thank you!

Also, thank you to all the teachers, mentors, and

attendees. We appreciate all those that took home

projects to finish up.

The proceeds of the bazaar go to the general fund

and the retreat fund. The monies we make really

help to fund our programs and service projects.

Betty, JoJo, and Jan have worked very hard to

provide us with quality and gifted presenters. Don't

you agree that we have had wonderful programs this

year?

Linda Saukkonen and the retreat committee have

started working on the retreat for 2017.

Please continue to bring your finished products to

the meetings.

We will also be selling used magazines, books, and

patterns. You can bring those to the intake events.

designer benefit event. This event focuses on the vintage fabric designed by Harwood Steiger and includes a lecture by

Harwood Steiger expert Cynthia deVillamarette, trunk show, fashion show, raffle and refreshments.

It will be held at the Bend Senior Center at 7 pm, seating is limited. Admission is $5.

that give free vision checks to children in the public schools.

Foundation at 541-330-3907, or by calling Ruth Ruder at 541-728-0843. This will be fun! Call Ruth Ruder if you have

questions.

SUNRIVER GUILD HISTORY (continued from page 1)

By Lillian Arnold

In the 70s, she brought her family for visits and offered classes. The first was a whole week and when one

says to other quilters that she had a week of lessons from Jinny Beyers, one’s status as a quilter rises—

deservedly or not—several points.

The Dresden Plate quilt was raffled in November 1986 during the Card-a-Rama. We added just over $2000

to the Women’s Club charitable fund.

1988 20th Anniversary Quilt (This is the quilt that was stolen.)

This was a “picture quilt” planned to mark the 20th year of Sunriver. Resident artists designed blocks

(pictures) of activities one finds in Sunriver. The Quilters interpreted these pictures in fabric, embroidery,

knitting, etc. Between the pictures are quilted the different birds and animals seen in Sunriver. As the quilt

grew, we discovered that we couldn’t bear to have it leave Sunriver. With the help of Peter Philips and the

sale of 20th anniversary posters we framed it and it is hanging in the Great Hall Annex for all to see.

1989 For the Theater of the Cascades—16 blocks

The Theater of the Cascades chose the musical, Quilters, for their Spring production. We offered to do the

quilting and piecing necessary for the production. What we did not realize was that this play required the

equivalent of 2 quilts!!! Fortunately, quilters from Bend, Sisters, Redmond, Prineville and Madras also wanted

to be involved. The Sunriver Quilters did the sixteen 24-inch squares used as properties during the play.

The rest of the Central Oregon quilters made the Legacy quilt. Once can see it at the Sister’s quilt show and

other events around the state. It is well worth looking for.

1989 Christmas Ornaments

At the request of the High Desert Museum, we made pieced ornaments for their Christmas tree to be shown

with their quilting display. We turned in 35. They made a fine showing on the tree in the room with the an-

tique quilts.

1990 Sunriver Sampler

This quilt was inspired by Georgia Bonesteel’s “Shirley Sampler” in her book More Lap Quilting. Our version

has 44 different 12-inch blocks in two rows on this quilt. It has taken a bit over one year to finish. The quilt

is king-sized and will go to the floor on a queen-sized bed. It is completely hand-pieced and quilted and valued

at $1200.

She uses many techniques: camera, computer, scanner, printer, and sewing machine. She uses dye, paint, discharge print, stitching, the chip method (adding many small pieces of fabric) and embellishments to create these beautiful quilts. She asked us what we want to capture in natural world: light, texture, contrast, grandeur of the scene or something else. Using our photos, we can take the part we would like to portray in our quilt. Using many different methods of editing, we plan our quilt. In her two-day class she will share her techniques with the students in our guild. We look forward to seeing some beautiful quilts in the future! Marleen thanked guests and speaker and announced a 15 minute break. Thread Dancing by Julia Jeans:

Long Arm Quilting Services AND Long Arm Machine Rentals…

I am a free-motion long arm quilter that quilts all styles of quilts (all over, custom, appliqué and art). I’ve been long arm quilting for 3 years and have successfully quilted hundreds of quilts for customers and myself. In addi-tion, this fall I started teaching long arm quilting.

Have you ever wanted to quilt your quilt top and wished you had a long arm to use? Or have you ever wondered if you should buy a long arm sewing machine but wished you could use one for a while to see if it’s something you’ll stick with? Well here is your chance.

The first step is to take the ‘Introduction to Long Arm Quilting Class’ held at Thread Dancing in Bend. After you have completed the introductory class, you may rent the Gammill machine at $18 an hour. There are only two students per class so sign up with a friend today.

For more information on quilting services, class sign ups and machine rentals call or email Julia Jeans @ (541) 728 -1286 / [email protected].

The Stitchin’ Post: Happy Summer!

All of our Sisters Quilt Show memorabilia will be here by the first week of July, so now’s the time to get your

t-shirts, posters, 40th Anniversary pins, and other Quilt Show goodies, before the crowds arrive and we sell

out. Don’t forget to check out the new SOQS 40th Anniversary Memory Book, with photos from 40 years of

the Sisters Quilt Show!

Our “Folding Fairies” have been hard at work, and we have literally hundreds of charm packs, jelly rolls, batik

strip rolls, fat quarter bundles, and loads of new quilt kits on the shelves, just in time for the show. We finally
