Grand Forks has been selected as one of the Association of Defense Communities’ Great American De-fense Communities, according to a news releases from U.S. Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., and John Hoeven, R-N.D.

Heitkamp and Hoeven wrote letters to the ADC recommending Grand Forks for the award. The award recognizes communities for their support of lo-cal military installations and military families.

Grand Forks, and other winning communities, will be honored at the Installation Innovation Forum in Charleston, S.C.

ADC Recognizes 10 Communities for Outstanding Support to Service Mem-bers, Military Families

The Association of Defense Commu-nities and the Defense Communities Caucus on Monday announced the first class of “Great American Defense Communities,” an initiative launched this year to acknowledge the unique contributions cities, counties and regions that host installations make to improve quality of life for service members, veterans and their families.

The 10 communities were selected by a panel of defense community ad-vocates and experts from dozens of nominees based on the broad range of efforts they carry out on behalf of military personnel and their families, covering areas such as education, job opportunities, housing, family support during deployments and community appreciation.

“All 10 of our inaugural class of hon-orees truly embodied the ideals this initiative was designed to celebrate — making host communities for our nation’s military installations ‘Great Places to Call Home,’” said ADC CEO Tim Ford.

“The Great American Defense Com-munities program will help ADC and the Defense Communities Caucus share positive stories about the exem-plary efforts being made in communi-ties to support defense installations and their personnel,” Ford said.

The inaugural class of honorees in-cludes:

*Colorado Springs, Colo.Dayton, Ohio *Leonard Wood, Mo. *Goldsboro, N.C. *Grand Forks, N.D. *Lawton, Okla. *Manhattan, Kan. *Monterey, Calif. *Okaloosa County, Fla. *South Puget Sound, Wash.

This year’s class will be recognized throughout 2016 at a variety of events in Washington, D.C., including an exhibit and reception on Capitol Hill.

There is plenty of seating for small and large groups.

1. Congress made Independence Day an official unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870. In 1938, Congress changed Inde-pendence Day to a paid federal holiday.

2. Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Inde-pendence on July 4, 1776. All the others signed later.

3. The average age of the Sign-ers of the Declaration of Indepen-dence was 45. The youngest was Thomas Lynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina. The oldest delegate was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Penn-sylvania. The lead author of The Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.

4. One out of eight signers of the Declaration of Independence were educated at Harvard (7 total).

5. The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as President of the United States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

6. The stars on the original Ameri-can flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

7. The first Independence Day cel-ebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. This was also the day that the Declaration of Inde-pendence was first read in public after people were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell.

8. President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the Declara-tion) died on the same day within hours of each other in 1826.

9. Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird but was overruled by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who recom-mended the bald eagle.

10. In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. Today the population of the U.S.A. is 316 million.

11. Fireworks are part of the tradi-tion of celebrating this national holiday. The U.S. imported $227.3 million worth of fireworks from China in 2012. U.S. exports of fire-works, by comparison, came to just $11.7 million in 2012, with Israel purchasing more than any other country ($2.5 million).

12. Barbecue is also big on Inde-pendence Day. Approximately 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on this day.

13. Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) thirteen times in hon-or of the original thirteen colonies.

14. The tune of the National An-them was originally used by an English drinking song called “to Anacreon in Heaven.” The words have nothing to do with consump-tion of alcohol but the “melody that Francis Key had in mind when he wrote those words did originate decades earlier as the melody for a song praise of wine.”

GF Abstract Joins TOMS One for One Grand Forks Abstract, a North Dakota Guaranty & Title Co. (NDGT) kicks off their first an-nual TOMS shoe campaign. A movement to raise awareness of the impact a simple pair of shoes can bring to a child’s life.

Last year to continue to meet their best in service mission, NDGT began a “Companywide Community Service Competi-tion” which challenged all of their 14 locations to complete a community service project. Together their teams touched thousands across North Dakota and Minnesota.

“Our team knows the impor-tance and values of giving back to all of the communities that we call home,” said Nick Hacker, President. “This year we decided to take our give-back campaign a step further and initiate the TOMS One for One® movement in conjunc-tion with our Community Ser-vice Competition.”

Inspired by Blake Mycoskie and his TOMS organization, NDGT joined the movement, purchas-ing a pair of TOMS for each of their 125 employees, therefore helping 125 children in need. All 14 NDGT locations will wear their TOMS on the first Friday of every month raising aware-ness of the children around the world who have no shoes.

“We want to take the move-ment to the next level,” said Hacker. “We challenge our community partners to join the One for One® campaign by either purchasing a TOMS product or simply doing a ser-vice project in their local com-munity.”

Altru Health Founda-tion Receives Otto Bremer Trust Grant Altru Health Foundation has received a $93,856 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust to sup-port the expansion of telemedi-cine services in two regional hubs, Altru Clinic Devils Lake and Altru Clinic Roseau. These funds will expand an already successful deployment of con-nections between rural patients and medical providers in Grand Forks.

Telemedicine uses technology to present live, interactive vid-eo and audio between patient and specialist separated by distance. The medical consult is conducted from the patient’s hometown health facility, pro-viding local access to specialty care from many miles away. “Telemedicine is so important in this day and age. It allows re-gional patients to stay in their local area instead of traveling, lessening stress and improv-ing recovery for patients,” said Marsha Waind, Regional Rela-tions and Telehealth Manager at Altru Health System. In 2015, 3,502 patients received care at Altru via telemedicine services.

“This will expand the connec-tion times and services to the 80+ telemedicine providers that serve those clinics, as well as the 40 other regional sites. With the support of these funds, Altru will experience a 12% increase in telemed visits of higher acuity and complexity such as, dermatology, urology, cardiology and diabetes care,” explains Waind. “Otto Bremer Trust has long recognized the opportunities of technology to improve care for rural patients. We appreciate their vision and commitment to health care in the region.”

JLG Arcitects Re-ceives Inc. Magazine’s “50 Best Workplaces Award” JLG Architects is the only archi-tecture firm to be named one of Inc. magazine’s “50 Best Work-places” in the United States in 2016. Inc.’s award program is the first of its kind, measuring American companies with up to 500 employees that, accord-ing to the Inc. website, “deploy state-of-the-art techniques keep their staff happy and pro-ductive.”

“We hear it over and over again from the fast-growing businesses we cover: The biggest chal-

lenge that any business owner faces is finding and keeping the best people,” said Eric Sch-urenberg, Inc. President and Editor-and-Chief. “Building a workplace culture that allows your staff to grow with your company is absolutely crucial. Recipients of the Inc. Best Workplaces Awards have done so in spades. They should be celebrated and emulated.”

A 100% employee-owned com-pany, JLG Architects provides such benefits as a 401k dou-ble-match up to 6% for a total of 12% matching, summer hours and flex-time, and time off and funds for continuing education. JLG also offers a number of unique career devel-opment programs, including JL-Gdna, which trains new gradu-ates as they work towards their architecture licensure.

Randy Newman Rec-ognized by Ernst & Young Randy Newman, Chairman, President and CEO of Alerus Financial Corporation, has been named an Entrepreneur of the Year in the upper Midwest by Ernst & Young. The prestigious awards program, now in its 30th year, recognizes entre-preneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as inno-vation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and commu-nities. Newman received the upper Midwest’s top honor in the Financial and Technology Services category.

Finalists for the award were chosen during an extensive nomination process earlier this

year. Recipients of the annual award were selected by an in-dependent panel of judges and announced during a black-tie celebration held June 9, 2016, at the JW Marriott Minneapolis Mall of America in Blooming-ton, Minn. Newman and other EOY winners from the Upper Midwest region, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dako-ta, will now be considered for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year national awards, which will be announced during a gala to be held Nov. 19, 2016 in Palm Springs, Calif.

“I was flattered just to be named a finalist for this award, so to be named one of the top entrepreneurs in the entire upper Midwest is a true honor,” said New-man. “Banking

isn’t usually the first profession that comes to mind when you think of entrepreneurs, but we encourage all of our employees to approach their work with an entrepreneurial spirit and to

take ownership of their roles within the company. That inde-pendent thinking and welcom-ing of new ideas and strategies has allowed us to buck national trends in the financial industry and forge our own path with much success, so I share this award with the entire Alerus team.”

Newman joined First National Bank North Dakota (now Alerus) in 1981. He steadily progressed through a series of leadership roles until being named President in 1987 and CEO in 1995. Under his leader-ship, Alerus successfully navi-gated the devastating flood of 1997 in Grand Forks and has since carried out an aggressive expansion plan that included the acquisitions of Twin Cities-based Beacon Bank and Albert Lea, Minn.-based Alliance Ben-efit Group North Central States Inc. in 2015, representing the largest acquisitions in Alerus history. In the last six years, Alerus has grown by three times its asset size, three times its profitability, and three times its employee headcount (about 850 employees after closing

these two acquisitions).
