CONGRATS! Hole In OneEddie Freeman June 10 East #8 145 Yards 8 Iron

If you are not a member of the hole in one club or you don’t know about the hole in one club, then the next time that you are out ask the golf shop staff for help in signing up.

Competitive Golf Brent Ratliff, PGA, Director of Golf

As you have noticed all of the Club’s Championships are coming up. It is your chance to see how you stack up against your peers in fun and exciting formats. Here at Windyke, we pride ourselves in having some of the very best amateur golfers in the city. Here is your chance to become crowned as the ‘best of the best’ in several different events. No matter you age or ability level, we have events for you. If you have never or rarely played in your clubs champion-ships, then I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and participate this year. Not only will you have fun during the events, but it will give you purpose for all of that practice you have been doing or motivate you to practice a little more.

To assist you in getting over the competitive jitters, we will be having events, during our up-coming Men’s Nights, that will prep you for all of the situations that you will encounter in these competitive events. This is probably the most fun and interesting event during the Men’s Night season each year. So even if you have not played in one event all year, make sure that you play in this one. So get off the sidelines and get in on the action. I promise that you will have fun and who knows, you just might get better in the process.

U.S. Kids EquipmentSummer is officially here! We can only assume that your kids are begging you to take them to the pool, to the tennis courts, and of course to the golf course! If they haven’t gotten the bug yet then they will when you get them their new custom fit golf clubs! You have a custom fit set of clubs, why shouldn’t they? U.S. Kids has come out with a brilliant fitting system based on height and swing speed that ranges in 9 sizes and 2 speed categories. We are an authorized U.S. Kids dealer and there is no better place to get your children’s golf game started than at Windyke. Studies have proven that many golf swings are ruined or stunted at an early age because children use equipment that is improperly sized for them. If you are looking to get them going and need help finding the best first or second set for them then swing by the pro shop and put them up against our Fit Stick to find out where to start. I will be happy to guide you from there on what we can do to develop the next golfer in the family.

Coach Brock901-755-3160 (Pro Shop booking)901-238-7974 (cell)[email protected] from the Pro

Here is an interesting chart our GM Greg Hynes shared with me this month. It is from PGA Tour statistics, so keep that in mind. It is good information for those wanting to know how the best players putt from 3 ft to 10 ft out. Why only this range? Well, putts outside of 10 ft crash to low percentages, so getting this range dialed in is crucial. It is also essential to get all your chips into this range to have a chance for an ‘up and down’.

Let’s look a few numbers. An even par round putter more than doubles his percentage of mak-ing a 5 ft putt(78.9%) as compared to a 10 ft putt(37.0%). The chip is that important!

The shocking percentage is the high rate of converted putts from 3ft…. over 99%! Six feet av-erages nearly 75%! Nine feet is about 50%. Twelve feet is just over 25%. The 3-6-9-12 foot drill where you place a ball at the north, south, east, and west positions around the hole is great. Keep in mind that three feet is one step. Start with 3 feet and putt until you make all four putts. At six feet(2 steps) you have to make three before continuing. At 9 feet you have to make two before continuing. At 12 feet you just need one. This lines up with PGA tour averages in the chart. The tough part is that if you fail at any level, you need to go back to the start. Good luck!

Stroke Play Championship & Club Championship Qualifier for Championship FlightAugust 8 and 9 Saturday Tee Times Begin at 9:00 • Sunday Tee Times Begin at 9:00

This year we are again combining these two events for your convenience. To help with everyone’s busy schedule and to make the Stroke Play a two day event, we have moved it to August 8 and 9. It also serves as the qualifier for the Club Championship Championship Flight. The top 15 players, along with last year’s champion Nick Giles, will be seeded into the championship flight. This event will be pre-flighted based on handicap and will cost $100 including cart for both days. The cost to play in the qualifier as well is $50 and that entry also covers the entry fee for the Club Championship August 15 and 16 even if you do not qualify for the championship flight. Call the golf shop today for more information, (901)755-3160.

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPAugust 5 The annual Junior Club Championship will be held on Wednesday August 5th. We have moved the event to a one day event during the week to allow more kids to participate. The format is stroke play and is open to kid’s aged 6 – 18. Call the pro shop at (901)755-3160 to sign up. ENTRY FEE $20

Age groups: 8 & under 9 holes on the Executive Course 9-10 years old 9 holes on the Executive Course 11-12 years old 18 holes on the Executive Course 13-14 years old 9 holes on the West Course 15-18 years old 18 holes on the West Course

Tee times will start at approximately 1:00 each day. Pairings and tee times will be posted Tuesday August 4th at 5:00. You may call the shop at (901)755-3160 or check the doors of the pro shop for your time.

Men’s Club ChampionshipAugust 15 and 16This is golf at its finest. For those purists, this is golf the old fashion way: match play. All players electing not to play in the qualifier or missing in their qualifying attempt will be pre-flighted based on their USGA indices. This is golf for all ability levels. Matches will be played on August 15 and 16. The 1st and 2nd round will be on the WEST course. Flights, pairings and tee times for the event will be posted on Friday August 14 at 5:00. The 3rd and 4th rounds will be on the EAST Course. Entry fee is $50 plus carts.

Note: This year the entire event will again be played on one weekend. We hope that this will allow more players to commit to playing by having more certainty of the time required to complete the entire event.

***SIGN UP MUST BE DONE IN PERSON IN THE GOLF SHOP***

Ladies Club ChampionshipAugust 15 and 16Club championship schedule would not be complete without our Ladies Club Championship. This year’s event will be held on August 15 and August 16. As always, this is a Gross and Net division golf tournament each and every lady should play. This is your event so we need your participation to make it a success. Call the golf shop @ (901)755-3160 to sign up today.

SATURDAY, JULY 18

Practice FacilityIt’s great to have everyone back out at the club working on their game! As most of you know the driving range project that was completed during our shutdown has been a huge success. Even after the heaviest of rains the landing area is back dry by the next day allowing us to remain open. Now that it is open people are back to their normal routines of warming up and practicing. You may have noticed that at certain times of the day the range is at capacity. Please be respectful to others who are waiting during busy times by limiting how many balls you hit before you go play so that everyone gets an opportunity. Remember we have other areas that are great for warming up or practicing. The short game area next to one tee box on the east as well as the Par 3 golf course are two areas of the club that are underutilized and provide a great area to either get ready to go play or to simply have a practice session.
