EDITORIAL

Last years figures in brackets.

There are two appeals for volunteers in my editorial this month. Firstly, I have edited this newsletter for seven yearsand feel it is time for a new broom to take over, in order to breath fresh ideas into it. I would be happy to have ahandover period. Secondly, Jane Finnimore has managed the distribution of the news letter for much longer andwould also like to step down. This does not mean trudging round delivering all the newsletters, but rather deliveringit to a group of volunteers who then deliver it to specific areas. Something to note, it is my understanding that in thenot too distant future the newsletter will migrate more to the village web site. If you think you may be interested orrequire further details, Jane can be contacted on 368349 and my contact details are on the front and rear covers ofthis newsletter.Don’t forget the village BBQ on the 3rd July and make a note in your diary of the Moviola evenings which can befound on page 10.I hear the Lunch Club provides an excellent meal once a month. At the same time it’s a chance to have a chat withfellow villagers. More details can be found on page 15.Something to note for those who go to the Scout "Senior Citizens" party each year, this year the date has beenchanged to Thursday, 24 September 2015 at the Jubilee Hall from 7pm-8.30pm. Invites will be coming out earlySeptember.

FRIENDS OF MICHELMERSH CHURCHOn Thursday 21 May the Friends held their AnnualGeneral Meeting at the Barns, Michelmersh.Dee Tuffill (chairman) reported on a busy year andthanked all those who had contributed to the years’events. She acknowledged that without the considerablegoodwill of all those who had taken part in the annualprogramme, the Friends would not be able to continue toraise funds for the upkeep of the fabric of the church.Special thanks were given to Jill Wilson and her team forthe very successful November Coffee Morning. Those members present were given the new Programmefor the coming year. (Please contact the Chairman orSecretary if you are a member and have not yet receivedyour programme)

Following the AGM, Dee and Harry Tuffill gave a talk ontheir recent visit to Vietnam and Cambodia. The scenewas set when Dee and Harry commenced their talkwearing authentic peasant hats that they had broughtback from their travels.

This was a colourful journey through the bustling citiesand busy waterways of each country giving a fascinatinginsight into the contrasting ways of life for theirrespective populations. Vietnam with its heavyindustrialization and overcrowded cities and Cambodiawhere life was more rural and traditional. Despite theinevitable scars both countries bore from the relativelyrecent conflicts, Dee and Harry were impressed by theopen friendliness of the people they met.

The Friends will meet again at 7.30pm at the Barns,Michelmersh on Thursday September 24th when thetalk will be entitled ‘Tales from a Blue Badge Guide’.Friends old and new will be warmly welcomed, pleasecome and join us.(We charge £3 entry to our meetings the proceeds ofwhich go towards keeping St Mary’s safe from theinevitable ravages of time!)

ST ANDREWS CHURCHWe are entering a busy time, with work on therestoration/repair finally starting. Inside the church the oldfloor tiles have gone, internal scaffolding is up, to startwork on the beams for their repair (where possible) andreplacement. We are arranging a water supply and anupdated electrical one too, so we can have better heating. We await some response from the Diocese about ourhopes to do some modest internal changes, to make thebuilding more user-friendly for the 21st century. We arehoping to have a small kitchenette in the area where thevestry was, for refreshments after services.

We are aware of the fact that the building is usually onlyused for about an hour a week, so, in a hope to reach outto the wider community, a couple of our church memberswill be at the village barbecue for you to speak to aboutpossible further uses for the building for the widercommunity. A medium term plan is to have a lavatory inthe car park, making the whole place better for wider uses. The building itself is too small for an internal loo.

Unfortunately, our "mower box" which has sat quietlywhere it was for about 20 years now, was broken intorecently and a hedge trimmer and strimmer were stolen. No one saw what happened. As a result, we havedecided to move the box to a more visible position by the

road. This will have the added advantage that it will becovered by at least 2 lots of CCTV, so we hope that anyfuture thieves will smile when carrying out their work, asthey will be on camera.

One of the sadnesses of not being in our usual buildingis that important events such as funerals have to takeplace elsewhere. As a result of this, it is easy to miss outon what has happened, and that is true for me too, attimes! I therefore have to give, belatedly, the sad newsthat, in February Austin Turner died. He had been, formany years, the person who looked after ourchurchyard so well, till advancing years and ill healthmade him give up. We shall all miss him, as he was aregular figure walking his dogs around the village.

Regarding the schedule of works in the church, if allgoes according to plan, we hope to be open for Advent, possibly a little before, and certainly by Christmas at thelatest.

They made volcanoes, painted ice, made fizzy rock balls and learned aboutchemical reactions. There will be lots more exciting themes over the comingweeks. The children will be exploring holidays as a topic,

MICHELMERSH AND TIMSBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYIn May, David Standing, Head Gardener at GilbertWhite's House in Selborne, talked to the Society about hislong standing project to return the gardens back toWhite's original 18th century vision of a landscaped gar-den (done on a curate's rather meagre budget) incorporat-ing plants that encouraged wild life and which introducedmany new species. He was also interested in the localtopography and what are now referred to as ley lines.Gilbert White was best known for his diaries and journals(The Natural History of Selborne) in which he recordedhis meticulous observations of the natural world and hecould be described as the forerunner of today's environ-mentalists. For anyone who has not yet paid a visit tothe gardens at Selborne, it is to be recommended, as theresults of David Standing's passion (he has been theresince 1979) are most rewarding and a tribute to hisdedication and hard work.In May we had our annual plant sale which raised over£600 to be split as usual between funds for the JubileeHall and the Horticultural Society. The Rose Show was held on 8th June and athough rosesare late coming out this year, there was a remarkablygood display of blooms. Stewart Pocock of PocockNurseries made a dash up from The Royal CornwallShow to come and judge the exhibits for us. Fourteendifferent people entered the classes and the evening wasattended by 23 members. Mr Pocock made his winningchoices quickly and expertly, so we received a rapidresult of the prize winners. The overall points won was

a tie between three members: Ann Dowland, JanetMilln and Sue Taylor (see photo, courtesy of Peta Hunt). The President's Vase for Queen of the Show was givento Sue Taylor's stunning hybrid tea entry and the KimHunt Bowl for the Bowl of Roses was won by Janet Milln. As usual, we all enjoyed this sociable and informalevening with, at last, a fine and warm evening.(A Schedule of points/cups awarded to all entrants tothe Show will be available in due course by e-mail [email protected] and on request)

This year, a group of ourmembers visited Bursledon Brickworks in Swanwick, which had opened that evening exclusively for them. Thebrickworks ceased manufacture in 1974 and is now anindustrial museum. A good time was had by all andlots of interesting images were captured.

Viewfinders now take a summer break but the newseason starts again on Tuesday 1st September in JubileeHall. The first meeting is a talk by Geoff Read called "AnIntroduction to Light". The following is the second instalment of an interviewbetween Carolyn Jory, Ginny (Jory) Clover and BettyNutley, with a little memory help from Betty’s daughter JoMorgan.Betty, at 94, is the oldest village resident and has livedhere in Mesh Road all her life. This interview, conductedin January, was to capture Betty’s memories before theyare forgotten.

C = Carolyn B = Betty J = JoMy aunt found me a position. When the old lady,Mrs Humbert, died, and the old gent was left there. They were Lords and Lady’s to my way of thinking.Well that was how it was. The old chap was lookedafter and I don’t know what happened then. Don’tforget I was only a kid and nobody knew and theydidn’t talk about it. I suppose he had to give up inthe end, old Harry. And they built him that housecalled ‘Castaways’, next to the garage. Timsbury. There is a big house there, the Flints live there? Thatwas old Harry’s house, as we called it.

Lymington was my first position. My Aunt Marygot me that and it was miles away. I think the firstday I went on the bus. I had to get a bus from hereto Romsey and from Romsey to Southampton. AndI got out from Southampton and I had to get a busfrom Southampton to Lymington and I hadn’t quitegot there and I didn’t know quite where I was. I gotoff the bus and I know I howled and I knew I’d haveto walk. Instead of getting off where I had to get off,I got off nearer Southampton than Lymingtonbecause I was worried about where I was. Silly.

I’d never been to Lymington before. Anyway, Iwalked down there and I walked up the drive to thehouse and that’s how I found it. It was the first timeI had been way from home. I lived there. It was justlike Downton Abbey. We had half a day off a week, one Sunday was the morning and the other Sundaywas the afternoon by 10 o’clock. I think we had afew hours off in the week, we used to walk downinto Lymington, I suppose. It was a long way for mein those days. I suppose I got on alright there. I didwhat I was told.

I started cleaning something for the old cook in thescullery, because my aunt hoped I would have beena house maid or something. But, no, I was the poorone, I was the servant. I helped the old cook in thekitchen. “Leave those pots out there” she used tosay. “Get in here and help me”. I was there for about

a year and there was a butler and he had a boy towork for him and I had a scullery boy with me.

Aunt Kate she didn’t work here, I think she went toLondon. My granny had a son who was in PurbrightGarrison. He married somebody up there. OldGranny and I used to take the train up there andwalk from Woking, or somewhere like that, andwalk to their house. I haven’t been up there foryears.

We had a ladies maid there (Lymington) and shewas nice. . She was the niece of a Mr somebodywho lived at the top of the hill here.

I was sacked from there. The boy there for thebutler - he had a day off and I had morning andafternoon off. He had a time off and I said to him

“If I do your turn, will you look after my lady?” Thelady’s maid lived upstairs and she used to have atray taking up to her which I used to do and Icouldn’t go out because I had her to look after. Iasked him if I had done his turn for lookingdownstairs, if he would take her tray up to her. Ofcourse, he said he would. I think there was anothergirl there who lived there, she was Irish. A lot ofIrish girls lived there in those days. And we wentout and when I came home, I was sent for to thedrawing room. It was about the first time I had seenthe old Mrs! She gave me a month’s notice. The boydidn’t take the tray to the lady and she gave me thesack. But then, a month after, she called me into thedrawing room and she asked me if I would stay. And I said “No, I won’t stay”. Because I said Iwanted to get nearer home. It was a long way fromhome down there. It was buses then.

Anyway, I got back home here and Granny and myAunt Mary. They had all worked at Kimbridge.Aunt Mary had been the cook at Kimbridge foryears. I was 15 or 16. I didn’t want a job, do you? They got me a job in Romsey.

NEW ROAD ARTISTSA lively term in the Art Group. Dr. Alan Fowler's talk onMax Bill was the best he has given us. He related Bill'swork to artists we have come across due to his previoustalks i.e. Janet Spencer, Richard Lowe, Natalie Dower. His interests lie in an area we are not particularly familiarwith, so we always learn something new.We have had one of our prospective members visit uswith her work. Liz Bray showed us some very interestingresearch work and paintings, some of which wereproduced during her recent M.A. course at SouthamptonUniversity. We have two more artists coming this term topresent their work.In late June, Dorset artist Bonnie Brown will visit us to talkabout the whole process of Abstract Art . We alwayslook forward to her productive visits. At the end of term we will review the project started earlierin the year on 'My Favourite Place'. Work produced by

our members based on a variety of locations special toeach one.In August we celebrate our 25th ANNIVERSARY. Thiswill be in conjunction with HAMPSHIRE OPENSTUDIOS 22nd August to 31st.
