In a culture obsessed with end results and perfection, it is crucial to remember that, for a disciple, it's the journey itself that is most important. Disciples are often described as 'learners,' but this is one, potentially limited, understanding of discipleship. Discipleship in the biblical tradition is not learning about Jesus, but becoming like Jesus-doing life as Jesus did life. The three dimensions of the life of a disciple (being part of the body of Christ, becoming more like Jesus, and joining Jesus in ministry) are broad strokes of commitment. Notice that they do not limit the options for how one may engage the body of Christ or how one grows to become like Jesus or even dictate how one must be engaged in ministry. They only point to the reality that discipleship is inclusive of all three of these dimensions of growth. Each disciple must personally discover how God has 'wired' them and is calling them to be engaged. There is no 'one size fits all' for discipleship. May you continue to grow in Christ, John

In the May/June newsletter you were encouraged to take the Real Discipleship Survey to see where you are in each of six dimensions of discipleship and where we are as a congregation. Thank you to the thirty-nine of you who have taken the survey so far. If you have not taken the survey you may do so by visiting this link http://realdiscipleshipsurvey.com/survey/take.html and using this code: gzMtLi. If you do not have computer access you can call the church office (288-4257) to arrange to take it here or on paper. Several have done it this way.

Here is a matrix which indicates the percentage of people who placed themselves in each of the levels of maturity for each dimension of discipleship:

With a quick glance you will notice that there are two areas with very few who responded that they were in the “Maturing” level of discipleship. No one indicated that they were maturing in the dimension of “A Life of Hospitality.” None of us are intentionally seeking to build relationships with unchurched people in order to share God’s love. Only eighteen of us are seeking to relate to others both in the church and beyond in ways that reflect God’s hospitality to us. Fourteen of us are growing in our life obeying Jesus by daily seeking to apply the teaching of scripture to my own life. As you can see these are two areas where we can grow as individuals and as a congregation.

I hope those of you who have taken the survey have read the personalized report created for you describing where you indicated you are on the path to maturity in Christ, offering next steps, and resources to help you grow. The survey summary reminds us

Discipleship is a lifelong journey into the abundant life Jesus desires for us. It is a process of continual development through which we grow in maturity (become Christ-Centered or fully surrendered).

Back to School Sneakers

Again this year we have been asked to continue our support of Difference Makers and Hearts and Hands United in providing 2,000 pairs of shoes to school children throughout Delaware County. Riverside’s goal is to raise enough money to buy 50 pairs of size 4 sneakers for boys. We estimate the price to be from $10 to $15 per pair. The sneakers will be given away Saturday, July 28 at the annual Tools for School event held at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause please write Sneakers on the memo line of your check or on your offering envelope with the amount on the special projects line. Donations must be in by Sunday the 15th of July.

was matched, doubled.

News from the Music Director John Rutter: The Importance of Choir

Written Transcript from an Interview given March 31, 2015…

Choral music is not one of life’s frills. It’s something that goes to the very heart of our humanity, our sense of community, and our souls. You express, when you sing, your soul in song. And when you get together with a group of other singers, it becomes more than the sum of the parts. All of those people are pouring out their hearts and souls in perfect harmony, which is kind of an emblem for what we need in this world, when so much of the world is at odds with itself…that just to express, in symbolic terms, what it’s like when human beings are in harmony. That’s a lesson for our times and for all time. I profoundly believe that. And musical excellence is, of course, at the heart of it. But, even if a choir is not the greatest in the world, the fact that they are meeting together has a social value. It has a communal value. And I always say that a church or a school without a choir is like a body without a soul. We have to have a soul in our lives. And everybody tells me, who has sung in a choir, that they feel better for doing it. That whatever the cares of the day, if they maybe meet after a long day’s school or work, that somehow you leave your troubles at the door. And when you’re sitting there, making music for a couple hours at the end of the day, that’s the only thing that matters at that moment. And you walk away refreshed. You walk away renewed. And that’s a value that goes just beyond the music itself. Of course, as a musician, I put the music at the heart of it, but all of these other values just stand out as a beacon. I think our politicians need to take note…my gosh do they ever! [laughs], and our educators, those who decide education budgets, church budgets, just need to remember it’s not a frill. It’s like a great oak that rises up from the center of the human race and spreads its branches everywhere. That’s what music does for us. And choral music must stand as one of the supreme examples of it. Our very own Riverside Singers will be starting-up again in September. We will have a kick-off get-together at the Reese/Dorn household in late August. More details to come. I hope to see many new and not so new faces. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe summer.
