Welcome to the 2020 Famous Maroon Band!
Greetings from the Band Hall!
We hope that your summer is going well and that you are getting excited about the 2020 football
season and fall semester. While some things will be different, we are working very hard to be ready
for you to report and are committed to providing the fun experiences and sense of family that has
come to define the Famous Maroon Band!
2020 Halftime Shows
Our student selection committee made some great music recommendations, and we have some fun
shows planned for this fall. Our first show is a “Pirate” themed show, commemorating the hire of new
head coach Mike Leach. Coach Leach authored the leadership book Swing Your Sword several
years ago. Selections include “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Yo Ho/Drunken Sailor,” and “Up is Down.”
Our second show is “Divas Through the Decades” and will feature music by Aretha Franklin, Donna
Summer, Beyonce, and Nicki Minaj. In addition, we will have a special Halloween show as well as
our annual patriotic show.
Band Camp
Band camp is our most important week of the year, and your attendance is required. We will do a
lot of work this week in smaller groups and while we will work hard, we will have fun as well. It will
be hot – so prepare yourself for the heat by spending some time outside in the days ahead. We
want camp to be positive and productive so come prepared to be outside. We will check in this
year by section so look for an email in the next few weeks that will outline the expected procedure.
Class Registration/Membership
Everyone should be registered for marching band (MU 2511 01) by now or have communicated with
our office regarding your specific situation that has prevented you from registering. Please do NOT
change your class schedule going forward. We have a plan to allow us flexibility with any
schedule conflicts that may arise if start times to classes are altered prior to the beginning of
school.
There is a lot of important information in this newsletter, so please read it very carefully. Band camp
check-in, dorm check-in and the summer uniform information are a few of the more important items
that need your attention. Please complete the Entrance Survey and the Medical Information form
prior to your arrival. We will also begin to communicate with you through your msstate.edu email
account, so please check that account frequently for additional information.
