TIM TALK
“Less Fret, More Faith”
In preparation for the Summer Sermon Series and Bible Study I
have spent the Spring reading two books. The books were Adam
Hamilton’s Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain
Times and Max Lucado’s Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a
Chaotic World. [See below article about the Summer Sermon Series
and Bible Study.] Even though written by entirely different authors
both books had similar theses; fear and anxiety prevent us from fully experiencing the
promise of Philippians 4:7: “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.”
Lucado says that fear and anxiety are cousins but not twins. Whereas fear sees a
threat anxiety imagines one. Lucado furthers says of these two cousins: “Fear screams,
Get out! Anxiety ponders, What if? Fear results in fight or flight. Anxiety creates doom
and gloom. Fear is the pulse that pounds when you see a coiled rattlesnake in your
front yard. Anxiety is the voice that tells you, Never, ever, for the rest of your life, walk
barefooted through the grass. There might be a snake…somewhere.”
Hamilton, however suggests that fear and anxiety are like peas in the same pod.
They may not be identical twins but they feed off of one another as if they were.
Hamilton says that fear and anxiety are emotions that profoundly shape us. He writes,
“the reality is everyone worries about something. We all have things we fear. And most
of us will have seasons when anxieties and fear simply overwhelm us; ... you can never
fully eliminate fear from your life (and that’s actually a good thing). The battle with fear
is not a one-and-done kind of battle; rather, it is a regular part of our lives. But while
fear is a persistent companion, we don’t have to be controlled by it. We can learn to
address our fears, control them, learn from them, even use them, and we can press
through them.”
The year 2018 has thus far turned out to be a very challenging year for me as a pastor.
Too many people I have come to appreciate and love have died: Sam Miles, Betty Ricks,
Gloria Maddrey, Verna Carroll, Jack Richwine, Lori’s Dad – Jon Fenton, as well as my
own father – Ray Hazlett. With each passing death my anxiety/fear, believe it or not,
grows exponentially. Like with Lucado’s rattlesnake, I would rather avoid the front yard
altogether. Yet with God’s help I have been able to use my anxieties and fears, as
Hamilton suggests; ‘to press through them.’ Even though I still find myself anxious
when it comes to facing the next death (you know…there might just be a snake lurking
somewhere), with God’s help I am learning to live a life of courage and hope; and in so
doing, I am stepping out in faith first instead of allowing my fear to take the wheel.
July/August 2018 Issue 7 Page 2
I believe this Summer Sermon Series and Bible
Study could not have come at a better time. We as a
church and a denomination are facing a very uncertain
future. When we allow our fears/anxieties to take the
wheel we will miss out on the promise of Philippians 4:7;
“the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.”
My goal for the Summer Sermon Series as well as the
Bible Study is for all of us to learn to have a little less fret
and a little more faith.
Face your fears with faith
Examine your assumptions in light of the
facts.
Attack your anxieties with action.
Release your cares to God.
In Christ,
Tim

BREAKFAST AT DENNY’S
Oaklette is encouraging you and your friends to gather for a
‘social breakfast’ at the Battlefield Blvd. Denny’s located in front
of the Home Depot on the second Friday of every month. In July
that’s Friday, July 13th and in August that’s Friday, August 10th!
This is an opportunity for the good folk of Oaklette to “get outside
of the castle” and into the neighborhood of which we are a part.
No reservations are necessary! Just show up and eat breakfast (or
a snack). Breakfast is on you. Debbie Rippard will be there to greet
you at 9:00AM!

Christ’s Hands
Independence Day lessons for church life • Return to the basics — On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith,
we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of
course, Jesus.
• Honor the gift of freedom — “For freedom Christ has set us free … do not submit again to a yoke
of slavery” (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom.
Likewise, as citizens of God’s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift
In World War II, bombs destroyed a church in France. As
parishioners cleared the rubble, they discovered a statue of Jesus
that was now missing both hands. A visiting sculptor later offered
to make repairs, but church members declined, saying Christ
“has no hands to minister to the needy or feed the hungry or
enrich the poor – except our hands.” He inspires. We perform.
St. Teresa of Avila wrote:
Christ has no body but yours;
No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this
world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours.

with others.
• Enjoy community — July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings.
Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events.
• Be light in the darkness — As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called
to display the Gospel’s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for
power — as in, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8) — share a
root. Through God’s power in us, we share Jesus — dynamically! — with others.
—Heidi Mann
Lessons from a farmer
Summer often reminds pastor Walter Wangerin Jr. of his father-in-law, a farmer. Farmers, he
writes, remember “that we belong to the earth, and the earth belongs to God.” Recalling his
father-in-law working the fields, he states, “Surely I don’t suppose that we shall live by the horse
again, but I plead that we live on this earth with reverence.”
Because God gave people “dominion” over creation (see Genesis 1:28), we are “God’s emblem
within the universe, God’s signature upon the work he had accomplished,” Wangerin writes.
“We were placed here to serve God by serving the earth and so to be served by it.”
Who demonstrates that better than a farmer nurturing soil and seeds to yield abundant harvest?
“By his reverential stance,” Wangerin concludes, “the farmer calls again for honor to God and
kindness to creation, that we dress and till and keep it rightly.”

Divine Priorities
In Center of the Universe (Destiny Image), Pastor Bill Johnson
tells of being given, in adulthood, a type of dog he’d longed for
since childhood. As thrilled as he was, he wondered why God
would bypass his “priority prayers” concerning real human need,
spirituality and eternity and answer one of his “unimportant”
prayers – those related to material things or circumstances.
Johnson condluded that God wanted him to learn about God’s
character – that God is a loving, generous Father, who takes
pleasure in his children’s delight. “After all,” Jonson writes, “I
expect him to care about the important things of my life. How
refreshing it is to see that he cares about things that score very low
on the Eternity Rating Chart, just because he loves me.”
