State Swimming

Three from Three! Wow!

Our swimmers have done it again! This year not only did they win

the Central Schools Relay, they did so by smashing their previous

record by over 1.4 seconds! Warren Central School is quickly

becoming known for its outstanding swimmers, and this year all our

swimmers have continued to raise the bar even higher with PB’s

the order of the week in Sydney.

Our record breaking relay team were Braith Boyd, Courtney Marks,

Brittany Marks and Tori Cole. Our other representa-

tive swimmers at state were Charlotte Scotson &

Brodie Boyd.

The state swimming championships are still in

progress as this newsletter is being published, so

we will endeavour to share the full results in our next

edition. For now we would like to congratulate our

star swimmers and thank their families and coaches

for their hard work and support.

Symphonia Jubilate On Wednesday night our talented and committed Primary School Choir and

Instrumental students studying Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone and Saxophone

with Mr Nick Evans, performed with an Orchestra from Sydney, Symphonia Jubilate.

Our Primary Choir joined with 25 singers from the community, making a choir of 55 in

Warren, who sang with great gusto! The 300 audience members shared applause for

all performers that was appreciative and enthusiastic. After the final piece many in the

audience stood up to give a standing ovation.

Students who performed with Indigenous dancers, singers, story tellers and artists

Locky and Fleur from Milan Dhiiyaan were outstanding. With only two days rehearsal

the students looked and sounded fabulous. Their dancing was inspiring and they had a

great time learning about their country, culture and traditions.

Symphonia Jubilate is made up of musicians aged between 11 and 18. They were

AMAZING. They say practise makes perfect! So the students in the orchestra must

have dedicated a lot of time to practise.

A huge thank you to all staff, students and parents for their attendance and support.

Milan Dhiiyaan

Indigenous students from Warren Central School were privileged to work with Locky and Fleur of Milan Dhiiyaan on

Tuesday and Wednesday in this last week of school.

Locky and Fleur are inspirational and professional dancers, artists, story-tellers and senior Aboriginal cultural educators.

Students enjoyed learning ancient Aboriginal cultural stories from our country and the corresponding dances that go

with the stories. Local totem animals were celebrated through dance. The students were enthusiastic about embracing

their culture.

Another very successful round of Moorambilla auditions!

ANNUAL PROGRAM

Thank you for participating in our 2019 Skills Development Workshops. This year thanks to 126 schools

we educated over 3,500 students in music skills, making it our biggest workshop tour yet!

On Wednesday April 10 Warren Central School held their ANZAC Day Ceremony in the J.B. Renshaw Hall. This year we commemorated the many animals who worked and died alongside the soldiers during World War 1 and all subse-quent wars with Sophie Hopkin’s reading of The Horse Soldier by Mark Wilson. We also recognised the deep friend-ship and connection between Australia and New Zealand, particularly after the recent events in Christchurch. Many students from both Primary and Secondary were heavily involved in the ceremony, taking part by reading or laying wreaths, crosses or planting poppies. ANZAC Day continues to be a crucial time for students and staff at Warren Cen-tral School to reflect on the sacrifices of those soldiers before us, and the soldiers currently serving for the safety and freedoms we enjoy today. Attendance Too many of our students are absent from school without the school being informed of the reason. It is a legal requirement that all absences must be explained. Please remember to contact the school if your student is absent for any period of time, whether it be one hour, one day or a number of days. If a student’s attendance drops below 88% he/she is put on a Personalised Attendance Plan to assist in increasing attendance. If you collect your child from sick bay and your child is still ill the following day/s, you must notify the school on those following days as we cannot assume that they are still sick. Students who are away without the school being notified are marked with an unjustified absence.

HAT PARADE On Friday 12 April K-6 will be holding their

annual Easter hat parade. Students,

please start creating your Easter hats at

home in preparation for this exciting event.

Family and friends are invited to attend

and enjoy a picnic lunch with the students.

Mrs Oriel has organised a special lunch

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Help us break the cycle of Head Lice by regularly checking your child’s hair for head lice and/or eggs. Head lice are very common and we are always conscious of the concerns that they present and the potential embarrass-ment that an infestation can cause. They can be treated quickly and easily to prevent them from spreading, how-ever, the best approach to prevention is regular checking of hair.

Look for the following signs:

Persistent scratching, particularly behind the ears and the nape of the neck.

Tiny silver, white eggs attached to hairs, particularly at the base of the hair shaft.

Small, pale, brown lice (a little bigger than the size of a flea).

Facts on Head Lice:

Head lice are parasites that suck blood and live exclusively on humans.

Head lice don’t hop or fly, 95% are transmitted by close contact – avoid sharing hats, headbands, brushes, pillows.

They are especially common between children 3-12 years of age.

They don’t like short and plaited hair – girls are more likely to have head lice because they like long hair

Treating head lice

Purchase a specialized head lice treatment available at the chemist or supermarket and apply it according to the directions on the packet.

Examine all family members hair, and treat everyone found to have head lice at the same time.

Wash the treatment out and use a fine-toothed comb to remove dead lice and eggs.

Repeat the treatment if necessary in 7 – 10 days if lice are still present.

As a precaution, bed linen, towels, brushes and hats should be washed in hot soapy water.

Should you require further information regarding head lice or treatment please contact the school or the local chemist.

Science and Engineering Challenge

15 Year 6 students travelled to Dubbo last Thursday to compete in the annual Science and Engineering Challenge. The

students were challenged in various ways to solve numerous engineering problems from building a sturdy bridge using

paddle pop sticks, straws and tape, which would withstand heavy weights, designing and building a tall tower which

would not crumple during an earthquake to powering a town with lights. Overall we came 4th for the day which was a

wonderful effort from the students.

Some of the students’ comments were:

My favourite activity was light coms because it was like a puzzle and I really enjoyed it. The day was really fun and I

loved the activities. Harrison Leach.

Best activity was trying to build a structure that could hold weights and withstand an earthquake. Charlie Gale.

My favourite activity was building a moon buggy. It was an amazing day. Bella Gough.

I enjoyed making the bridge out of plastic straws, paddle pop sticks, tape, paper and cardboard. After we built it we had

to test it to see how much weight our bridge could hold before collapsing. Ryan Stanley.

I learnt what engineering and science is all about. Jack Reid.

We had to a power saving city where we had to light up the city but we only had a certain amount of power to use.

Paddy Barnett.

It was fun, we experienced new things and we made a building which could hold up weights. Hayley McMillan.

The activity I liked most was Max Power where we had to use communication with each other to which switches had to

be turned on or off. Lillian Bailey.

National Vege Crunch Day

Rainbow Reward – Capricorn Restaurant at Golf Club 28 students from years 4, 5 and 6 had a very tasty lunch at the Capricorn Restaurant at Warren Golf Club on Tuesday this week. We would like to thank Kevin and Sun for opening their restaurant for us and preparing our meals on their day off. Also thank you to Geoff McKay for organising and serving the drinks. Our K – 3 Respectful, Responsible Learners walked to the Lion’s Park and were treated to hot chips from JC’s café. The students had a great time at lunch, along with various craft and sporting activities at school. Thank you to Mrs Mulvaney, Mrs Perry and Mrs McCormack for the huge job of organising our rewards activities.

The Big Veggie Crunch.

Did you know that currently only 5% of

NSW children are eating enough

vegetables? In order to work towards

improving this percentage, we need to

increase children’s knowledge, exposure

and positive attitudes towards vegetables.

The Big Veggie Crunch is the time where

all schools across NSW munch on a

vegetable simultaneously.

Warren Central School primary students

were offered platters of cut up vegetables

and tasting plates and we joined in to

munch our way into a record breaking

crunch attempt on Friday 5 April.

Year 12 Hospitality, Jamie Sinclair and Zoe Taylor, held a six course degustation on Friday. They called their restaurant

Warren Central Spectacular.

This was the cluster 4 assessment for their Certificate ll in Kitchen Operations. They were assisted by year 11

Hospitality student, Conrad Markgraaff and Stage 5 Food Technology students, Sophie Hopkin, Stephanie Squire and

Chelsey Hewett.

This was a staff appreciation luncheon, narrowed down to a special 8 of their own selection. Zoe and Jamie would have

loved to involve all of WCS staff but this was a strictly limited event.

The six courses included, Watermelon and feta salad with mint and balsamic glaze, Beef slider with tomato jam in

brioche, Pumpkin ravioli with burnt butter and sage sauce, Poached egg with a chilli avocado smash on sourdough,

Crispy pork belly on cauliflower cream and caramel drizzle and finished off with Deep fried ice cream with strawberry

and chocolate sauce. It was such a successful event which really showcased the culinary talents of our students. Well

done to everyone involved.

YEAR 11 FUNDRAISING

This term, students from Year 11 have been hard at work fundraising for the Year 12 Formal. Through a variety of activities, students have raised over $1000 (and still counting) to go towards the Formal. Students have been actively selling chocolates to Warren Central School kids, filling $100 clubs and selling tickets in the biggest Easter basket raffle to hit WCS! With a whopping 12 baskets filled to the brim with delicious chocolate treats, there are plenty of chances for students and community members to win. The Easter Raffle tickets can still be purchased from the front office, Year 11 students and Miss Martin right up until midday on Friday 12 April. The raffle will be drawn in an assembly taking place in the Quad in front of the hall at 2.30pm on the last Friday of term. I would also like to take this time to personally thank all the staff, students and community members who donated Easter eggs for the raffle baskets and all the people who have purchased 100 club tickets, raffle tickets and donated their time, effort and support during the Year 11’s fundraising efforts. A special mention must go out to Aimee Sheppard and Finn Nielsen from Year 11 who have worked tirelessly the entire term to put together Easter baskets, sell tickets and donate their time outside of school hours to help fundraise for the Year 12 Formal.

Students from year 9/10 William Gordon, Cooper Hunt, Lachlan Marks,

Lachlan Clarke, Braith Boyd, Kallie-Lea Daley, Tori Cole, Mackenzie

Pardy, Taylah Reid, Lakkari-Lee Williams and Katherine Owens.

Last Wednesday April 3, 11 students from

years 9 and 10 represented Warren Central

School at the Science and Engineering

Challenge in Dubbo. This year our students

combined with Coonamble High School

and Trangie Central School to compete in

over eight different challenge tasks.

Throughout the day our teams needed to

solve problems like bridge building, earth-

quake proofing and vehicle construction in

order to attain as many points as possible.

Our students came up against students

from 7 other regional private and public

schools and were able to collect over 860

points, placing them in third overall. All

students represented the school with pride

and did themselves proud with some very

impressive performances. Special mention

to Will Gordon and Katherine Owens who

built their Mars rover buggy in less than 15

minutes and were able to take their buggy

to the final and achieve all required tasks.

Well done year 9 and 10.
