Reflection for the Seventh Sunday of Easter

An early TV show, hosted by the avuncular Walter Cronkite, was aptly called “You are There.” The gist of it

was an imaginary time travel backward to great moments in history, complete with TV cameras to capture the

moment.

I believe it would be fascinating if such travel were possible, if only to be part of moments like Moses speak-

ing with God; or David slaying Goliath. Closer to our own time, consider what it would be like to watch

Michelangelo sculpt the David, or paint the Sistine ceiling.

Or to hear Lincoln’s Gettysburg address in person.

But we come to a whole new level when we imagine hearing what the twelve year old Christ taught the

learned elders in the Temple.

Or listening in to His post-Easter bible exposition to those two travelers on that famous road to Emmaus.

Well, something of that imaginary sort becomes a reality today as John’s gospel lets us “listen in” to a very

powerful prayer of Jesus to His Father.

Part of His prayer features the same elements of the “Our Father” He taught us to pray. For example, He prais-

es the Father’s name, and asks that evil be banished.

The question of our own prayer life surfaces in this context, and prompts us to examine how we pray and what

we say. Is it real or rote? Do we keep talking all the time, or do we also listen to God?

A case could be made for most of us that we need to give prayer a higher priority and at least some of the

prime time of our day. After all, we are acknowledging the presence and importance of the Person who

dreamed us up and died for us so that our life after death would not be a nightmare.

If prayer is difficult for us in this distracted age of technological toys, there is no need for shame. Great saints

struggled with prayer and the humble ones tell us so.

Meanwhile, we can rejoice that God loves us for our efforts, and gives us Himself in the Eucharist for the

strength we need to continue.

After all is said and done, this earthly life is supposed to lead to a heavenly one, and endless happiness will

only come if “You (and I) are There!”

First Reading: Acts 1:12-14

Jerusalem remains the geographical center of germination for the fledgling community that will become the

Church. Mary and the Eleven return to the Upper Room to await the arrival of the Holy Spirit by praying the

first ever novena.

Second Reading: I Peter 4:13-16

Sharing in Christ’s suffering is a badge of honor for Peter, and it is a prelude to future glory. At this early peri-

od, insults and public disgrace are the price of being Christ’s follower. Later will come outright persecution.

Gospel: John 17:1-11a

We “overhear”, so to speak, part of Jesus’ farewell earthbound prayer to His Father. Having fulfilled His

earthly mission, Jesus goes on to pray for His disciples and their mission.
