Gn 3:9–15; 2 Cor 4:13—5:1; Mk 3:20–35

In an idyllic painting of Eden, Peter Wenzel wonder-fully depicts the harmony and multiplicity of all God’s creatures. The pastel heavens and the majestic soft mountains give a natural warmth and serenity to the background. Birds appear to be chatting in a tree while a tiger plays with a hare at his feet. A lion and lioness vigilantly stroll their kingdom, inspiring security rath-er than fear. There is space to run, shade for rest, a path under a leafy arch that invites us to walk. Eden is the perfect habitat of protection, freedom, and fraternity.

And in the center are Adam and Eve. Traditional farm animals are nearby, and man’s best friend is at Adam’s right hand with a cat sitting at his feet. Like our first parents, we are not alone in our search for God. We are surrounded by many of the wonderful creatures he has placed alongside us to reflect his glory and show us his love.

When God comes looking for people in the Garden, he expects to find them enjoying the beauty and harmo-ny of his creation. Yet original sin, that abuse of free-dom by doubting God’s goodness, destroyed humani-ty’s innocence and his unity with creation. What was cherished now becomes a source of fear and suspicion. We destroy and pollute what God gave us to use and to preserve. Trusting in God’s goodness, as proved by the wonderful beauty in creation, is the key to inner peace and unity with others and creation. Doubting his love is to doubt our very source and goodness.

ADVERTISER OF THE WEEK

THANK YOU! I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for a great retirement party and wonderful mass. As I said in an earlier bulletin, my time at St. Ann’s has been an incredible journey, one where I have met so many wonderful parishoners, those that have passed and those present. I thank you for being a gift to me and allowing me to serve you. Thanks and God Bless, Denise Kagie

St .Ann’s is helping support this program by allowing a basket in the back of the church filled with baby bottles . You can take a bottle home and fill it with your donation. Please return it to the parish office and we will return them to New Hope. Bottles will be in the church thru Fathers Day, June 17, 2018.

PROMISES Today’s liturgy is full of promises. The read-ing from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, re-newing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God’s will makes us “family” with Jesus, who forgives all sin and tri-umphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe—really believe—that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise our-selves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one an-other as well.
