The look on his face was pure horror, and that’s some- thing I’ll always remember. As I crept closer to him, it took me a few seconds to see the snake he was talking about. There, lying stretched out just off the side of the dry creek bed, was a very large copperhead. There was no mistaking that snake once I had seen it with my own eyes. That serpent was very well camouflaged, and I’m glad Chandler had the knowledge of poisonous snakes from watching the animal shows on TV, taking after the old Tur- tle Man himself. Those snakes are so well camouflaged that it’s easy to get too close to them without realizing they are there. Snakes like the copperhead are made to blend in to their surroundings, but Christians are not supposed to be like that. Paul says “...do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2). Christians are sup- posed to be the opposite of what the copperhead is in its natural surroundings. We aren’t to blend in; we are to be different and stand out so that people don’t have a hard time noticing us.

Blending In

A short while back I had all of my children with me at the creek for a fishing expedition. On our way downstream

to a spot where this particular creek runs into another, someone must have hit the pause button. I had stopped to do

something with Caroline when Chandler started screaming and flailing his arms in the air. When I asked him what

was wrong, he told me that he had seen a poisonous snake. The look on his face was pure horror, and that’s some-

thing I’ll always remember. As I crept closer to him, it took me a few seconds to see the snake he was talking

about. There, lying stretched out just off the side of the dry creek bed, was a very large copperhead. There was no

mistaking that snake once I had seen it with my own eyes. That serpent was very well camouflaged, and I’m glad

Chandler had the knowledge of poisonous snakes from watching the animal shows on TV, taking after the old Tur-

tle Man himself. Those snakes are so well camouflaged that it’s easy to get too close to them without realizing they

are there.

Snakes like the copperhead are made to blend in to their surroundings, but Christians are not supposed to be like

that. Paul says “...do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you

may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2). Christians are sup-

posed to be the opposite of what the copperhead is in its natural surroundings. We aren’t to blend in; we are to be

different and stand out so that people don’t have a hard time noticing us.

Bible Trivia

In what did Paul tell the Corinthians to bear with him?

[The answer will be given during the Sunday morning welcome by Jeremy.]

Last week’s answer is found in 2 Chronicles 30:3. For they could not keep it at the regular

time, because a sufficient number of priests had not consecrated themselves, nor had the

people gathered together at Jerusalem.

This year’s summer series is underway. We hope you’ll make plans to be with us every

Wednesday evening through the summer at 7:00. Next week Randy Brown, from Portland, TN

will be speaking on the topic of “Better Worship.” See you then.

Peter said that we are to be a people for God’s own possession (1 Pet. 2:9 NASB). The KJV translates this as

“peculiar people.” Resist the urge to try to blend in and be like everybody else. Jesus affirmed that His disciples

were in the world but not of the world, as He prayed for His Father “...to keep them from the evil one” (Jn. 17:15).

If we are starting to blend in to the world, the evil one is having an effect on us.

The next time you are out in nature, pay attention to all the things that blend in to the surroundings. I’m glad Chan-

dler was able to spot the copperhead before he got too close, as that could have resulted in a bad snakebite. Those

colors really had blended very well. Remember that we as Christians are not to be like that.

Brotherly,

Jeremy T. Butt
