For a 12th consecutive year, the Savage Fire Department Catfishournament was held in the smallEastern Montana town that hugs theYellowstone River along the Montana-North Dakota border.
Te rules remained the same. Each team is allowed to bring fiveChannel Catfish to weigh-ins. ALLfive catfish must all in the slotand measure between 12 and 18.Anything under 12 or over 18 mustreleased during the tournament andnot weighed. Tis always creates aninteresting obstacle or the 3-manteams to overcome. One weekend ayear, catfish anglers need to change
tactics, shif the ocus off o big fish, and scratch and claw or the littleguys. Tis year was unlike any other onrecord, however, as twenty-five teamsout o sixty weighed in over sevenpounds. (a weight that is typicallyimpressive enough to take home thetitle). Fighting their way to the top oa field littered was the trio o BrennerFlaten, Glasgow, Chad Dawson,
Dickinson, ND, and Cole Plouffe,Glendive. Using a run and gunapproach and a plethora o differentbaits, the champs set a NEW all-timetournament record with a basket ofish tipping the scales at 8.305 lbs. Anytime you can win atournament it just eels great, regardless o the event or the moneyon the line, taking hardware home isawesome.
Dawson, Flaten, and Plouffe haveteamed up the past our years in Savageand had previously finished in thetop six in both 2013 and 2014. Flatenbecomes the first 2-time championin event history. His previous titlecame in 2006, while teaming up withbrothers Jason and Brady Flaten. Tis years winners were not the
only ones enjoying an outstanding dayon the water. Local team, captainedby Harlan Conradsen finished in2nd place overall. Teir weight o7.925 lbs. was also good enough toeclipse the previous tournamentrecord weight o 7.900 lbs. set in 2015.Harlans team secured the runner-upspot and some amily bragging rightsalong the way by finishing just aheado the 3rd place squad, captained by
Shawn Conradsen and their 7.780 lbsGary Paulson took home the big fishhonors, winning the separate cashprize, with his 14.325 lb beauty. It isthe third largest catfish ever weighedin at the Savage tournament.F riday nights Calcutta estivitieswere impressive as always andthe social and arm-raised catfish
eed afer the event was again wellattended. Te crew at the Savage FireDepartment deserves a ton o creditor continuing to put on a first classevent that combines a un-filled socialenvironment with a serious slice ocompetitiveness. Te 13th Annuaevent will take place in Savage onJune 10th, 2017. I any opening spotsbecome available they will be open tothe general public next May.
