Ascension of the Lord Radio legend Paul Harvey coined the phrase "And now you know the rest of the story." It has always been a great source of debate as to the reasons why the writers of the Gospels described some events in great detail, yet left others with the barest of details. In doing so, we sometimes are forced to use our imagination, wondering what exactly took place at a certain time or place. Luke's description of the Ascension is one such event. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus' final prayer with his disciples is recounted with great detail; he leaves them with God's promise that they will soon receive the Holy Spirit. Luke's writing continues, however, with the matter-of-fact statement that at Bethany, Jesus raised his hands, blessed them, and was taken up to heaven. At first, we want more detail; perhaps, such an important and beautiful event should be personalized by each of us. The Ascension is celebrated near the end of the Easter season. When we remembered several weeks ago, the lifting up of Jesus on the cross, we recognized that it signifies and announces his lifting up by his Ascension into heaven (CCC 662). Today, remember this final event in Jesus' earthly life and try to imagine what it might have been like to witness it. Would it have been possible to describe it in words? Or would it have been so powerful that your transformation would enable others to believe?

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: May 22: Rev. Joseph Herod (1988) May 23: Rev. John N. Chylewski (1965) May 24: Deacon Joseph Rapal (1992) Rev. Albert J. Zimmerman (2002)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE In a misguided burst of creativity, a man installed a night-light into a conch shell he found on the beach. His wife took an instant dislike to it, and at the next yard sale, it was the first thing she put out. He felt vindicated when a woman kept coming back to check it out and finally bought it. "That'll look great in your home," he said. "Oh," she replied, "It's not for me. My bridge club is having a charity sale, and we were asked to bring the most hideous thing we could find. What I have here has got to be the winner!"

This is a Wonderful book chock full of history about the Diocese of Gary as well as its many parishes and its three bishops. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese of Gary, I would encourage you to purchase your own copy of this book. You might even want to purchase a copy for a family member or friend as it would make a great gift. You may purchase the book at the parish office for $25 per copy. We will also try to make the book available for sale after Masses on the weekends. If you can help in this matter by manning a sales table, kindly let us know.

NEXT SUNDAY: OUR BIRTHDAY! That is absolutely correct. Next Sunday we celebrate the birth of the Church as we remember that great moment of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit showered the gifts of the Spirit upon the apostles and Mary in the upper room. Since that time, the Church has been filled with inspiration to proclaim God’s Holy Word as revealed to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Next Sunday, we will also commission the new members of our Parish Pastoral Council. You have read in the bulletin the past couple of weeks, but kindly allow me to extend the invitation to you here as well: In honor of the Holy Spirit, please wear the liturgical color of the Feast of Pentecost, which is RED.

At the Ascension of the Lord, Jesus basically told us, “My time is finished. The job now belongs to you.” Are we up to the job of being Christians? I hope so!

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY

Can one life really make a difference? Can I, can you? Well someone who was amongst us seems to have. Sr. Dorothy “Dot” Stang seems to have done so. But as Jesus did, Dot so loved, she gave her life to make a change. On Monday there was a small article on page A15 in THE TIMES. It was in the upper right corner or I might have missed it. The header read: RANCHER FACES MURDER CHARGE, Belem, Brazil. Then a picture of D. Stang. A rancher goes to trial today for the killing of an American nun whose death while trying to save the Amazon rain forest now threatens to strip away the impunity of the region’s often-violent elite. Vitalmiro Bastos Moura is one of the two ranchers accused of ordering the 2005 killing of 73-year old Dorothy Stang, a naturalized Brazilian originally from Dayton, Ohio. The gunman, his accomplice and an intermediary have been convicted in Stang’s death, but Moura is the first alleged “mandante” – mastermind – to stand trial. It took the courage, the love, of one 73-year-old child of God to crack the privileged status quo of a ruling elite. We pray that it will bring lasting reform, but at least for the moment it brings hope that change can happen. Will the people learn to love as “Dot” loved, as Christ loved? Dot’s story is very much home town because back in 1951 Dot taught at St. Victor’s grade school and then at St. Alexander’s in Villa Park. She was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from Reading, Ohio. In 1966 she went to Brazil and began her missionary work to help poor farmers build independent futures for their families. The history of land reform in South America and other parts of the world is messy. It is one of the seeds of thought behind Liberation Theology. Dot worked for the Pastoral Land Commission, an organization of the Catholic Church that fights for the rights of rural workers and peasants, and defends land reform in Brazil. She was a leader. Dot received the “Woman of the Year” award from the state of Para, Brazil where she worked. She also received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Brazilian Bar Association for her work helping the local rural workers. The recognition of her work outside of the area also drew more scrutiny to the need for land reform in the area. The poor local framers and peasants farmed land that for hundreds of years laid untouched. They eked out an existence on this land at the same time their small farming techniques protected the land from the large destruction of mass logging and farming by large landowners. These operations not only drove out the small poor farmers but also destroyed the rain forests. Dot was killed because she loved and her love was contagious and growing. She became a threat to the status quo. May you ponder Dot’s love and the love of Jesus. May their love become so contagious that you will also learn to love as they love. Kindergarten Students Learn About the St.

Vincent DePaul Society Mrs. Samaan’s half day Kindergarten class collected three bags of groceries for the St. Vincent De Paul pantry. St. Vincent DePaul Society members Sharon and Jim Marmalejo came to speak to the children about the work that they do. “Who does our food go to?” asked one student. “Well,” explained Mrs. Marmalejo, “there are families in our community who need our help to feed their hungry families.” The students were excited to learn how the organization helps others. The young boys and girls quickly realized that they too can make a difference, and feel great at the same time. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Marmalejo for teaching the students that each of us are called to help one another.

All School Easter Celebration

The Second Grade classes were responsible for the All-school celebration of Easter on April 10th. Selected students gave an introduction, read the First Reading, shared the Intercessions, and were gift bearers. The children learned the importance of this most Holy of Days. They reminded all to keep the light of faith burning and to walk as children of the light.

“CATCH THE SPIRIT”

Pentecost is the great feast of the Holy Spirit; to celebrate this day we fill the church with the color red.

To “Catch The Spirit” - Environment and Art asks that everyone wear RED to Masses on May 26th and 27th - and bring a red or white geranium to be placed at either end of the Sanctuary. Pentecost Sunday is the day of selection for the Pastoral Council at the 10:00 am Mass. Let us FILL the Sanctuary with geraniums to celebrate Pentecost and the selection of our new Council members. The geraniums will be planted around the church grounds so that we can enjoy a visual reminder of the “Spirit” all summer.
