Design aestheticsDesigners of abayas and jalabiyas are increasingly incorporating modern techniques and silhouettes in the design and manufacture of these traditional garments. Fabrics are chosen carefully to maintain the chaste element of the outfits and are stylized to suit the modern Arab woman. Drapes, cinched waists, bell sleeves and a variety of modern interpretations are now making their way into the design and creation of jalabiyas, kaftans and abayas. You’ll find a more confident use of colours and cuts being employed by young, talented designers.

EmbellishmentsThe use of embellishments on abayas and jalabiyas may not be new, but the fashion-conscious Arab woman is well aware of the importance of well-placed, quality accents and finishing touches. Gold thread, crystals and an extensive use of embroidery along the neckline, cuffs and elsewhere on the garments sets the outfit apart. The use of beads and fine threadwork or diamantes highlights the embroidery by embellishing it further. Depending on the occasion, these embellishments can be kept minimal or can be extremely ornate and detailed, as is often the case for celebrations and festivities.

FabricsIn the past, designers didn’t experiment too much with fabrics, particularly in the design of abayas and shailas. Nowadays however, more and more designers are experimenting with a variety of fabrics, to achieve an end result that could rival the very best International fashion houses. Layering sheer fabrics and laces over the heavier abaya material for a tonal effect has the result of a dramatic look that is both modern and innocent at the same time. Lace is now a popular addition to Arabic fashion and is often used to embellish kaftan sleeves, scarves and hemlines as well as incorporated into the actual embroidery of a garment.

PerfumesScents of ArabiaDiscover Arabic fragrances and the deep, rich scents of the region that are deeply

embedded into our culture.

The art of perfumery is an essential part of Arab culture and is synonymous with the ancient heritage of this region. With a history that dates back thousands of years, Arabian fragrances are steeped in exotic traditions. The distinctive scent of Frankincense, an aromatic resin, forms the basis of these coveted fragrances. In ancient times, Frankincense was often traded in exchange for the choicest luxuries. Arab merchants were known to barter perfumes in exchange for Chinese Silks, Roman Gold and other desirable items.

While other countries have traditionally favoured softer floral and citrusy notes in perfumes, the dusky, woody scents associated with our regional perfumes are slowly seeping into international markets. The perfumed robes of the men and women of the Middle East, the deep fragrant trail wafting out of local stores, are all associations made with this region. The use of fragrance has now become an integral part of daily life, here in the Middle East.

But not all Arabic fragrances are made the same. Perfumers develop variations to appeal to differing tastes. Even within the oriental range of scents, there are heavier varieties, which find popularity among local Arabs, while tourists and other buyers often favour the lighter fragrances. A greater acceptance and even demand for oriental fragrances has seen the trend grow in recent years, with a host of big names in international perfumery also now adopting these scents and incorporating them into their fragrances.

PrintsPrinted trousers are no longer the reserve of women’s fashion. Slowly making an entry into menswear, prints go the distance from simple stripes and checks to all-out florals on everything from trousers to jackets. The rule here is to use sparingly and keep prints minimal to avoid looking like you turned up to work in your favourite pyjamas.

Shirts The classic t-shirt comes in colour-blocked and printed varieties this season. Stripes, plaid and other bright colours also make a resurgence in shirts and t-shirts, giving you a huge range of options to choose from. Pair long sleeved shirts with the cuffs rolled up, teamed with your favourite pair of jeans or shorts on the weekends; or under a smart blazer for a dinner date.

Loafing AroundSock-less loafers teamed with skinny trousers, cuffs rolled up are uber chic this summer. Find loafers and mocassins in classic browns, blacks and whites as well as a riveting rainbow of bright fun hues for the more fashion adventurous. Pair yours with shorts or jeans to achieve that casual, unassuming air.

We have been inundated with requests on how to add an oriental or Arabic influence into homes so we chose this as our central design theme this issue, in keeping with the holy month and the festivities that will follow. If you too have been curious about how to infuse your home with some traditional Asian elements, follow us as we explore the key elements that go into this design aesthetic.Because privacy is an important element in our culture, homes are often designed to provide maximum privacy without compromising on the aesthetic values. Many local houses feature an inner courtyard that will serve as the axis of the home. Often, a long hallway will separate the main entrance from this courtyard. This area is often decorated with fountains and plants to add an atmosphere of serenity and zen-like appeal.

Eastern PromiseBlend Middle Eastern design influences with contemporary details for a modern twist of this traditional design theme in your home.

Ofcourse not all of us can redesign our homes around these principles, but it’s nice to visualize these design elements if we hope to achieve some characteristics of it. Any home will need a theme to work around when you’re redecorating and while some themes may overlap, it helps to have some

common element that will allow it to run smoothly throughout the design space in question. You need to also decide if you want a more traditional style of Oriental décor, or simply a hint of this style for a modern twist. No matter what you decide, there are many options to explore. Arabic-styled interiors lean heavily on geometric shapes and patterns as well as ornate details so look for accessories with these elements and don’t be scared to play around with them within your existing design.

Vibrant colours and beautiful ornaments also define this style of interior decor. To really bring this influence into your home, you could include Persian rugs, mosaic ornaments, gilded accessories and a not-so-subtle nod to luxury. Incorporate the regions popular colours such as turquoise and orange as well as other bold shades to recreate the warm and inviting atmosphere common to this style and culture.

Travel Like a ProWhether you are a frequent flyer or brand new to the skies, our travel tips will have you travelling like a true jet setter.

No one can really tell you how to pack because only you know what’s important enough for you to lug across the world and then lug back! Still, there are some tips and even tricks, which can help ease your travels somewhat. Firstly, invest in some good quality luggage never compromise on this. If necessary, get the kids a trolley or backpack of their own, to teach them the importance of being responsible for their own belongings. What’s more, when they have to carry their own weight around (literally), they’ll be less inclined to want to pack up the entire household into one suitcase!

Definitely look for travel-sized versions of everything from your night cream to his shaving foam. Make do with cleansing wipes rather than carry an irksome jar of cleanser. There are dozens of ways to scale down on that holiday packing. When packing clothes, go for essentials first and when you’ve got that sorted perhaps thrown in a couple of luxuries. You’ll thank yourself later for having packed light!

So how do you decide what to pack? The rule to work around, is to pack a little bit of everything. But even then, you have to prioritize. Before dumping everything into that seemingly large, bottomless pit of a suitcase, lay them out before you and really scrutinize them. Do you really need 7 pairs of shoes on a week-long trip? The answer in most cases will be a resounding NO. Ask yourself, “Will I really use my 7-inch pair of stilettos enough times to justify lugging them on a tiny sea plane to a chic Maldivian resort island?”

dubaioutletmall 47

Page 48: June 2014 Dubai Outlet Mall Magazine

To ensure you use up the least amount of space, keep your clothes tightly packed and folded up into vacuum baggies or packing cubes. Use mesh bags for lingerie and other small items such as gadgets and chargers, medicines etc.

If you are travelling with the family, it doesn’t have to be a completely different ball game. Apply the same principles of packing essentials first. For kids, pack lightweight casual clothing for a warm destination and if you are travelling to a cooler climate, plan to layer them rather than carry a dozen jackets or overcoats. Pack medicines and other essentials separately to avoid leakages and any nasty shocks upon arrival. Look for suitcases that are lightweight and roomy. Extra compartments and pockets are always a plus, to throw in those last minute things such as a summer read or an ipad for the kids.

Ramadan

DeitHealthy RamadanAdopt a healthy meal plan during the holy month of Ramadan to ensure your body and mind remains in optimal condition.

The Holy Month of Ramadan is that time of year when people of Islamic faith across the globe take up the month-long fast. Abstaining from food during the day, with a meal at dawn and an Iftar feast at sunset, Ramadan marks new beginnings and a deep cleansing of the soul. While this noble task of fasting during Ramadan is good for the mind, body and soul, it is equally important to understand that Ramadan fasting involves a strict diet of healthy nutrition. It is crucial to provide your body with optimal nutrition during the fasting period. By optimal, we do not refer to quantity, but rather, quality. Indeed, overeating at Suhoor and Iftar can only exacerbate problems such as acidity, commonly experienced by individuals who engage in fasting.

Remember, good health is the key to true happiness. So how do you achieve good health? By engaging in regular amounts of physical activity, eating balanced meals and ultimately achieving the right balance between spirituality and our material existence. The same rules apply during Ramadan. During the month of fasting, we need to adopt a healthy lifestyle and ensure that our body is receiving adequate amounts of fluid, fruits, vegetables and the right proportions of carbohydrates and proteins to keep our bodily functions in the best state.

Eat a good blend of protein, carbohydrates, and essential fat.

Include foods such as egg whites and chicken as a source of healthy protein.

Oatmeal offers a complete source of nutrition and will provide you with the necessary amounts of energy required to carry you through the day.

Include a protein shake if you are planning on continuing your regular fitness activities during the fasting period.

If you are preparing sweet meals, use raw honey or agave to sweeten them as these have a lower GI and are hence nutritionally more stable.

During the pre-dawn Suhoor, follow the guidelines below:

It is imperative to drink plenty of water. Continue to drink during the hours after Iftar to keep bodily fluids replenished. Fresh juices are also a good idea.

56

Page 57: June 2014 Dubai Outlet Mall Magazine

Avoid foods containing excessive amounts of salt.

Include fruits in your morning meal as a great source of fibre and vitamins.

At sunset as you prepare to break your fast, mentally plan to include these foods into your Iftar meal:Open your fast with dates because they contain a high level of potassium, a key re-hydration nutrient. The fructose content in dates will also help to keep energy levels high.

Pick a good blend of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates to provide optimal nutrition.

Don’t over indulge in fried and oily foods as this could lead to heartburn and acidity.
