RE-DISCOVERING OUR ROOTS In late March, I met a pastor from Germany, Dr. Helmut Edelmann. Pastor Edelmann was in this country to do research on 500 or so German pastors who had come to the United States in the peri-od from 1880 until about 1920, after being theologically trained at Breklum Seminary in northern Germany. He explored the Central States Synod archives at Bethany College, but he also came to visit me when he found out that my grandfather, Pastor Wilhelm O. Zahlis, had been trained at the Breklum Seminary in the early 1900’s. Pastor Zahlis, my mother’s father, came to the United States in 1904; he served parishes in Colorado and Illinois before serving as a pastor in the Canadian prov-inces of Manitoba (where my mother was born) and Saskatchewan. In the 1930’s he served in Cali-fornia before accepting his last call to WaKeeney, KS, in 1939. He retired in 1948 and lived in Ellis, KS, until his death in 1961. My encounter with Pastor Edelmann has moved me to remember my grandfather, who lived with my family before he died when I was 8 years old. I have also provided Pastor Edelmann with infor-mation about my grandfather. I have again realized the importance of re-discovering my ancestral “roots.” It is not that I forget those roots, but every once in a while, I need to be reminded that family roots are at the heart of my identity. I do find myself wishing I could ask my parents about those roots, but my father and mother died in 1987 and 2005, respectively. So, I talk to my siblings and do a bit of research on my own to remember—or learn for the first time—things about my grandparents and other forebears. Coming to an awareness about our roots is important for our lives as human beings. Medical pro-fessionals ask about family history when treating patients. We learn more about our personalities and our characteristics from exploring our roots. So too do we come to an awareness of our lives of faith by hearing the stories of the saints—believers in Christ who have gone before us. We learn about their faith, and we mature in our faith, by finding our roots and seeing how we connect to our ancestral roots. What we learn most of all from exploring our roots of faith is that, by God’s grace, we are connected to the root that is Jesus Christ. In John’s Gospel, Jesus identifies Himself as the vine, and His fol-lowers are the branches. As the branches, we abide in Jesus because He abides in us. The One who died on the cross for the sins of the world attaches us to Himself in our Baptism and never lets us go. Once we are rooted in Jesus, we are connected to Him—and to the other members of Christ’s Church who are the branches. Jesus, the true vine, is the heart of our identity. We bear the fruit of love because He first loved us. I invite you to discover—and to rediscover—your roots in your family, and in the family of Christ, as God’s beloved children.

BETHANY CHURCH NEWS Building on the Past – Confident in God’s Future – We make Christ known

Hello Friends! This last semester Camp Tomah Shinga teamed up with Bethany College and Dr. Adam Pryor to co-teach an outdoor ministry curriculum design class. Not only have the students built a wonderful curric-ulum and Bible studies but they also designed a crowdfunding page on Indiegogo to raise money for camper scholarships. Indiegogo is one of several online fundraising platforms that helps non-profits to maximize social contacts in order to do fundraising and build awareness. If you are not familiar with crowdfunding the idea is very simple and fun. The goal is to get as many people as possible to support our efforts to raise scholarship funds as well as build awareness about Camp Tomah Shinga through our shared online contacts. If you are not able to donate you can support us by forwarding the site to as many of your contacts as possible so they have an opportunity to help! There are many different giving options starting at just $5.00 and every person that donates will receive a special gift. Please consider checking out our site and forwarding it to as many people as possi-ble. On Sunday, June 21, we will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the ordination of Pastor Ron

MacLennan. Pastor MacLennan has faithfully served the Church of Jesus Christ as a parish pas-

tor, a campus pastor, and as a professor of religion. Please join us on June 21, at the 10:00 a.m.

fellowship hour, to celebrate his ministry! Cake will be served. Come and greet Pastor MacLen-

nan on that day, and let us thank him for his ministry.

THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Once again our community is blessed with a pro-gram that will provide a noon meal for children and teens ages 1-18 from May 21-Aug. 12, M-F, at the Methodist Church, 224 South Main St. (227-3326). (No meals weekends, Memorial Day, or 4th of July)

Bethany Lutheran Church needs 4 volunteers per day for the weeks of June 15-19, July 20-24 and July 27-31. Hours are 10:45 am until 2 pm which includes set-up and clean-up.

The Russian Is Coming

On Sunday, June 7, 2015, we welcome Pastor Manfred Brockmann as our guest preacher at both

services. Pastor Brockmann has served as a pastor and area dean in the Russian Far East since

1992. He has exhibited great leadership and tenacity in his ministry after the fall of the Soviet Un-

ion. Pastor Brockmann will also lead the Forum at 9:00 am on June 7. Please welcome him warm-

THE CHURCH FAMILY Perhaps you recall when Charlene Han-

son Jordan came to Bethany Church on

May 18, 2014 to speak about Sweden's

seventeenth-century witch hunts.

Her autographed book, Whispers in the

Church: Swedish Witch Hunt, 1672, is

now in our library. Near the end is a dis-

cussion of similarities between the witch

trials in Sweden and those that began

in 1692 in Salem, a seaport in the Mas-

sachusetts Bay Colony. Cotton Mather,

a respected clergyman, made the Swe-

dish trials known in Salem through his

preaching and writing. The preface be-

gins, "The people in this story are my

ancestors" and they lived in the six-

teenth and seventeenth centuries in a

rural parish in Hälsingland, Sweden. As

a result of Jordan's extensive research,

she "discovered how dangerous an im-

balance of power between Church and

state can become" and that is the story

she tells.

Umer Khan is Lutheran World Relief's Senior Director of

Emergency Operations. He is currently in Nepal where

LWR personal care kits and quilts are being distributed to

the survivors. The photo to the right is of Krishna Ku-

mari Dhakal who received food rations and other supplies

distributed by LWR and partners in the Ghorka District

of Nepal. The work we are doing and the challenges

we’ve faced remind me of what my elders would say:

CENTRAL STATES SYNOD TO MEET IN ASSEMBLY

The annual Assembly of the Central States Synod will be held at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan-

sas, June 4-6, 2015. An opening worship service begins the Assembly on Thursday, June 4. The As-

sembly will feature business sessions and elections, as well as Bible studies and workshops.

Attending as voting members from Bethany Lutheran Church are Jim and Donna Ruble, Sharon

Palmquist, and Josh Nelson, as well as Pastor Loren Mai. Thanks to those who will be serving as

voting members. We are grateful for the witness to Jesus Christ that is done through the congrega-

tions of the Central States Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

JUNE 2015 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Summer Activities - there will not be regular Sunday School during the summer, instead church

A WORD FROM PHIL

Schools out, but the Holy Spirit is still at work

It’s summer time. Summer has always been my favorite season. I often reminisce about the carefree days of summer I

enjoyed as a child riding my bike, playing little league baseball, going swimming, camping, etc. Even as an adult, life

just takes on a different pace during the summer. I am so very blessed to work with the amazing group of youth at Beth-

any Lutheran Church. My request for you is to keep our young people in your thoughts and prayers this summer. Even

though they are on a break from school, the Holy Spirit is still hard at work in their lives. Those of us at Bethany Luther-

an Church who invest our time and energy in these young people will be hard at work this summer as well.

Here are a few of the ministry opportunities going on this summer for our youth. For the Senior High Youth, the big

event this summer is the National Youth Gathering held in Detroit. The theme for this year’s gathering is Rise Up!

We leave by bus on July 13 and will return home on July 20. Our Youth Group has 15 youth going, 13 from Bethany

Lutheran and 2 from Messiah Lutheran, and 3 adult sponsors. They are Joyce Peterson, Larry VanDerWege and my-

self. So, please pray for our youth group for safe travels and for an amazing experience worshiping God and learning

more about God’s plan for their lives as they continue to rise up in their faith.

Our middle school youth have the wonderful opportunity to attend Confirmation Camp at Camp Tomah Shinga. This

year our youth will be there from Sunday June 21-June 26. Confirmation Camp is always a wonderful opportunity for

our young people to experience Christ’s love in a safe, nurturing environment where they get to meet new friends, enjoy

the outdoors and learn more about God’s plan for their lives. So, keep our Confirmation Students in your prayers while

they are at camp. Remember also the adult leaders who will be there during the week, Jeanne Lucas from Messiah Lu-

theran, Joyce Peterson and myself, as we instruct and guide the young people at camp.

Speaking of Camp Tomah Shinga, we also have a senior high member from our church, Jacob Bryan who will be spend-

ing a couple of weeks this summer at Tomah Shinga as a junior counselor. I am very proud of Jacob and I know he will

do a wonderful job representing our church in this amazing ministry setting.

There are many other youth events planned for this summer including BBQs, swimming parties and Bible studies. Once

again, just because school is out, it does not mean God takes a break in the lives of our youth. Neither should we. So,

thank you very much for all this church does in the lives of our young people. Thank you for the financial support that

allows for these great opportunities. Above all thank you for your prayers and encouragement. May God bless you in

our ministry together.

CHURCH HISTORY

In December of 1903 the Bethany congregation began to make plans to renovate the church in preparation

for the Augustana Synodical meeting in Lindsborg, June,1904. Mr. G. N. Malm submitted a colored drawing

as a proposal for the new altar, paintings and the pulpit.

The committee met with Pastor Carl A. Swensson on January 22, 1904, to choose the subject of the three

paintings and the stained glass window above the altar. They chose scenes from the life of Jesus that took

place in or near the village of Bethany in Judea: Jesus with his friends Mary and Martha, Raising of Lazarus,

and Christ’s Ascension. (Twenty-five days later Pastor Swensson died unexpectedly and the window he him-

self had planned became his own memorial.) The two side paintings were the work of Birger Sandzén and the

center painting above the altar was done by Mr. G. N. Malm. Mr. Malm presented a watercolor proposal for

the design of the altar and the chancel. Mr. Almquist and Mr. Alfred Palmquist carved the altar and all of the

ornate woodwork.

In August of 2014 Mr. Bill Soby of Lindsborg had the watercolor presentation piece painted by Mr. G. N. Malm

in his possession, and he very graciously presented it to the Bethany Lutheran Church Archives. We are very

grateful to Mr. Soby for the gift!
