I heard my friend Arlo Guthrie say something the other day. He was looking for donations to keep the Guthrie “Bring Your Own God” Church going. He said that every time someone put something into the pot, they became a part owner and were responsible for the continuance of the Guthrie Center. I’ve been saying that about WAMC in different ways for years. Again and again, I’ve reminded you, “We’re all in this together.” We all know that in 1979 the then Albany Medical College, owner of WAMC, was going broke. That was before they combined with the Albany Medical Center and became the fantastic medical powerhouse they are today. But back then, they were broke and the radio sta-tion was pronounced dead, a stethoscope up against its chest. A group of us asked if we could try to save it and to our amazement, the Medical College under the bril-liant doctors Bob Friedlander and Alan Miller, gave us our chance. We were broke and in debt to the College. We went on the air and asked the question: “Do we want to keep this thing alive?” There was a resounding affirma-tion from all quarters of the WAMC listening area. Un-solicited signs popped up with Beethoven in a raft. Kids went around with coffee cans to collect donations. The legendary Mayor of Albany, Erastus Corning, showed up to make a personal challenge (our first) of $800. Some-how we did it. Despite those who would have had us fail, it seemed that no one was going to let that happen. We scratched, we scrounged, we came to you or the people who lived in your homes before you did and somehow we made it.
Our Northeast Public Radio, otherwise known as WAMC, is now twenty-nine facilities. We have reporters where you live. We produce an amazing number of programs. We are one of the largest contributors to NPR. Frankly, the station is legend because of all of you who under-stand how important it is to keep us going. It has been about 37 years since this all began and it may seem like much more but one central thing is for sure: it is still YOU who keep it going. Back in the day, we asked some of the most important and well-heeled people in town to take an interest and to keep the WAMC flame alive. Not knowing who or what we were, many of them said no and said it rather emphatically. So it kept coming back to you. Now there are enough people to keep it going, in fact, more than enough. We have a locked box and in the last drive we put $400,000 into that box before Day One of our million dollar drive. I’d love to break that record this time and I know that we can do it. Our great friend, Tony Meola, put up an amazingly generous $5,000 as a locked box challenge. Now, as you read this, we have what seems like just moments to make it as we grow closer and closer to our record. If everyone who listens put something in, the drive would be over.Frankly, I like the fund drives. They give us a chance to talk to each other and to connect. Of course, there are always those who gripe and I ask them, “Did YOU put anything in the locked box?” Inevitably the answer comes back, a muffled intonation that sounds like a bunch of garbled consonants. Look, I love everyone who gives because it shows your ownership of this fragile enterprise. If we lose you, we’ve lost the game and I’m determined to keep this wonderful station, probably the best in the world, alive. So, consider the imperative: if we all do something we live. If there is a weak link in the chain, we die. I choose life. I know that you will join me.

Radio Deluxe features two hours of great jazz and smart, sassy repartee from husband and wife duo John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey. Oc-casionally, a special guest drops by the deluxe living room to join in on the fun. Radio Deluxe airs Saturdays at 2 p.m.
Long time public radio staple, A Prai-rie Home Companion, is a two-hour weekly variety show broadcast live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota and other locations in the U.S. and around the world. A Prairie Home Companion airs Satur-days at 6 p.m. and repeats Sundays at 2 p.m.
Saturday nights between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. we feature the very best in folk music with WAMC’s Hudson River Sampler. Our beloved Wanda Fischer began as the program’s host on September 18, 1982 and the program continues to be a listener favorite today.
Saturdays at 10 p.m., WAMC Blue-grass Time with Nick Barr brings listeners the best in bluegrass music, from the current chart-toppers to the cherished classics. Nick started at WAMC in January 2001.
WAMC’s Tim Coakley has hosted the Tim Coakley Jazz Show since 1987. Over the years, he has presented a broad range of jazz styles with an em-phasis on swing and melody. Many of the programs have a theme, such as performers on a specific instrument, a birthday salute to a famous player or songs associated with changing seasons. Join us for the Tim Coakley Jazz Show Saturday nights at 11 p.m.Afropop Worldwide is a weekly, hour-long program dedicated to presenting the music cultures of Africa and the African diaspora. Hosted by veteran
Cameroonean broadcaster Georges Collinet, the show blends great music, interviews with artists and experts, rich sound gathered in the field, and extensive research by our team of producers and consulting scholars. Afropop airs Sundays at 4 p.m..
From this Celtic heartland, The Thistle & Shamrock connects musical com-munities on both sides of the Atlantic through an engaging and entertaining current. The most listened to Celtic music program in the world is also the perfect vehicle for award-winning host Fiona Ritchie to explore her musical passions. These are both contem-porary and rooted, concentrating on evolving traditions in Ireland, Scot-land, Brittany, England, Wales, North America, and beyond. The Thistle & Shamrock airs Sundays at 7 p.m..
Sunday nights at 8 p.m. we feature concerts by the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops, direct from the fabled acoustics of Boston's Sym-phony Hall. Due to the Tanglewood Summer Season in July and August, the Boston Symphony Orchestra pauses production of their Sunday night shows in order to focus on their live concert broadcasts from the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tangle-wood. During the hiatus, we will fill the Sunday night 8 p.m. slot with our Live at the Linda series. The BSO Classi-cal New England show returns when the orchestra arrives home from their summer season. Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans takes us on the "Long Strange Trip" of the music of the Grateful Dead every Sunday at 10 p.m..Slow down from the busy weekend hustle with Music from the Hearts of Space on Sunday nights at 11 p.m.. The uninterrupted format weaves together quiet contemporary elec-tronics, classical adagios, soft jazz, space-creating sounds from many world music traditions, and the very best of the new age genre. Producer Stephen Hill billboards it as "slow music for fast times."
Coming up, WAMC will continue the summer tradition of carrying the Friday and Saturday night 8 p.m. broadcasts as well as the Sunday 2 p.m. Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts live from the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood in July and August. Our July Program guide will feature the season broadcast schedule.
The Metropolitan Opera Saturday 1 p.m. broadcasts will return when their 2016/2017 season begins in Decem-ber.
