Reflections on the Fund DriveAlan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.

Another Fund Drive recedes into the mists of time and all of us, audience and staff, are breathing a huge sigh of relief. Everyone put the maximum effort into this and came through. This one started on February 6th. Were it not for the six hours of Wagner on the Saturday, it would have been a record breaker. We were aided by some incredible challenges, a host of tireless volunteers, and dozens of business and organizations donating goodies for us to pass on to you. The major challenges made all the difference. We’re all tired, but very, very happy.

At this point, everybody here is so used to the drill that we automatically shift into what’s called “fund drive mode.” I often liken it to the return to summer camp, where someone would yell, “Bring out the volleyballs” and it was as if we’d never left. Everybody on staff knows what has to be done --from making the coffee to taking out the trash to running for the phones to entering the pledges – and just does it.

Happy (Almost) Spring, WAMC Land!

The trees are budding, the birds are singing, and during this month of renewal I’d like to renew your interest in a bevy of our amazing shows.

When we think of spring, the outdoors naturally comes to mind, so what better way to learn more about our changing environment than with our daily module, Earth Wise. This month, our host Bill Schlesinger, President of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, will explore vernal pools, the cooling effect of trees in our environment, and learn why feral pigs are a growing problem in the US. And if you missed a few, take a listen at wamcradio.org/EarthWise. Not only is the site a beautiful daffodil green, it has expanded interviews and more topical information.

We’ll continue with the educational theme and take a look at what’s coming up on The Academic Minute. Lynn Pasquerella, President of Mount Holyoke College, leads the way to DePaul University, where Sean Horan discusses the ins and outs of deceptive affection. Then we’ll come back east to hear from the College of Saint Rose’s John Williams-Searle on a disorder from the 1800’s to PTSD. We’ll also hear from the University of Texas at Austin’s Richard Corsi as he tells us his findings on indoor air pollution; then we’ll fly back to the U – Mass Amherst, and find out why we get jet lagged and how to prevent it. If you don’t already ‘like’ us on Facebook, go for it and get our daily updates.

To a degree, we know what’s going to happen because wespend a lot of time planning, gathered in a room together bouncing ideas around. We try to think about what you, our listeners, will like; we reach out for those challenges; we make sure that there’s food on the table for our volunteers and cups for the coffee. But each drive brings with it some surprises and this one was no exception.

Did you hear Sarah LaDuke sing La Vie En Rose? It was magical. Not only is she a great producer, she could be on Broadway. And, from the sublime to the, er, less than sublime, how about the yodeling/accordion/bad opera mix? I admit it, I can be a little diabolical when it comes to raising money for WAMC. As Mario Cuomo used to remind me, “Chartock in Russia means “little devil.” Hey, whatever works.

It was a sheer pleasure sitting across the table from Mr. Ray Graf who is, above all, a good sport. He was heard walking around the station singing, “Oh, yes, I’m the great…..subtractor.” He’s the guy, when we are doing a challenge, who keeps on subtracting as you keep on pledging. That way we know when we’ve reached our goal. He sure earned that Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Old* bourbon (which, rest assured, I paid for out of my checking account). And how about the night crew? They have their own loyal audience and I think Ian may have been mobbed by a bunch of fangirls on his way out of the station late one night. Joe, Sarah, and Selma did their usual great job keeping people laughing and pledging. I knew the fund drive must be drawing to a close when I walked through the room and they were discussing yak courtship in Lichtenstein.

There were some amazingly poignant moments during the D-Day special – so many people calling in, remembering loved ones who had fought in World War II. Indeed, we heard from more than a few veterans who were actually there on the beaches at Normandy.

All in all, it was a sweet Drive but just as one ends, we’re already looking toward June. If you, or someone you know, could put forward one of those major challenges, we’d love to hear from you. The “Locked Box” will be back so you can help out and shorten the fund drive if the spirit moves you. We were able to start Day One with a whopping $60,500 and hope to beat that next time out.

We at WAMC have a lot to be grateful for. Believe me, we are thankful for all the folks who get it. As for me, the adrenalin is out of my body and, as always, I’m tired, very tired. Thank you again. – Alan

WAMC Program Guide 3

This American Life are, so it seemed natural to jump at the chance to do a program along those lines atWAMC. Last month we debuted Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen, and suffice to say it was a smash! On the 16th, you can hear episode two, featuring Susie Essman (Curb Your Enthusiasm & Bolt) and Dave Cowens (NBA Center for Celtics & Hornets). We’ll get to see a different side to them as they delve into their PPT’s.

And putting on my News Director’s hat for a moment, we love your tips. Whether on the phone or on-line, we have gotten so many great ideas from you, our listeners and family, so please keep them coming.

Happy Listening, and may the spring bring you daffodil dreams, use of your favorite thing, and spare you from wild pig attacks.

Person Place ThingThird Friday of each month 1pm- 2pmPerson Place Thing embraces the idea that people reveal themselves most intimately when speaking not directly about themselves but about something they care about passionately. Interview subjects come prepared to talk about a person, a place, and a thing that are important to them: love it or hate it, as long as you have strong feelings about it. This structure elicits conversations that would not emerge in a standard interview, inviting the guests to tell stories they never have before.
