Super’s Report Bob McGeever Division Superintendent

I am writing this a few days after our annual banquet which means the 2016-2017 season of SCWD activity is pretty much done. Since not all of you were able to attend the banquet I will use this column to review all the awards we gave out at the banquet.

First and foremost, the BOD gave out a Hank Brown award this year. This award is for a lifetime of achieve-ment in the hobby and service to the SCWD. The award was given to Don Mayo. Please congratulate him the next time you see him.

Bill Marks was the recipient of the 2017 Bob Davis Award for Volunteerism. He earned it by making the new portable HO layout for the youth group this year. Congratulate him the next time you see him.

Based on the results of the modeling and photography contests we run at our regular meetings, Dave Casey was named Modeler of the Year and Sean Lamb was named the Photographer of the Year.

We also hand out certificates of appreciation and thanks at the banquet to folks who have pitched in all year to make things happen for the division.

And it takes a lot of volunteers to make it happen every year. Thank you all for pitching in and making it happen. Hope to see you all at the picnic. Bob

Youth Group Steve Brist The SCWD Youth Group held its last meeting of the school year on May 21st. We planned our summer activi-ties, including visiting the Whiskey River Railroad roundhouse before the July SCWD Picnic, railfanning at the Rochelle Railroad Park and a visit to the Toy Train Barn in Argyle. We thanked volunteer Paul Balfe for helping at our meetings. Mr. Balfe travels from White-water with his tools and helps trouble shoot locomotives and equipment. He is a great help to our group.

One of the highlights of our meeting was a clinic present-ed by one of our Youth members, Lloyd, who demon-strated his live steam model engine. Lloyd showed us how he fires up his engine and raises steam. We dis-cussed how the operation of his steam engine related to the operation of steam locomotives on railroads. For example, Lloyd’s engine had a firebox, a boiler and a piston, similar to a locomotive. We learned that it is always important to know how much water is in the boiler and that we can check the water level in the water glass. When we visit Little America in July, we hope that we understand a little more about how their locomotives work because of this demonstration. Thank you Lloyd for a great clinic. We ended our meeting with operating sessions on our N Scale T Trak layout and new HO layout. As our meeting season ends, we want to again thank the SCWD for their support of the Youth Group. This year the SCWD built us a new HO layout. Last year we launched the T Trak modules, also built and funded by the SCWD. We really appreciate these outstanding contributions to our club.

Our meetings will start again in September. We have fun activities planned for this summer. And we look back on a pretty great year for the Youth Group. We hope to keep proving that not only is model railroading educational, it is also fun. See you this summer. Steve

2017 Summer Picnic – Bonus Layout Tour

Opportunity Prior to Picnic!

Roy Grant will be opening his large N-scale, Omaha Western layout for viewing from 10 am to noon on Saturday, July 15th. He did so prior to the 2014 picnic but has since added extensively to his layout. His address is 1465 W. Medina Rd., Deerfield. From I-94 head north toward Marshall on STH 73. Take the first left onto Medina Rd and then go about 2 miles to his home on the left. John Haverberg SCWD Summer Picnic Coordinator

Modeling Project Phil Hottmann Modeling Project Chair For the modeling project I'm considering developing a kit that can be used as a flat. My thought is that this would be useful structure for almost all layouts. Hopefully, I'll be able to produce this in several scales. My plan would be a basic wood structure with a front, roof, dock and two sides. Some windows and doors would be provided, but you will have the freedom to add them if you desire. You will be able to get creative by adding any other details, such as signs, lighting, roof vents, stairways and any other detail you can think of. Phil

The Clinic Corner Bob Wundrock Clinics Chair I'm currently looking for SCWD members that want to do clinics for the next SCWD meet season beginning in September. It's worth a $25 gift card to the Madison Hobby Stop.

I'm also looking for a few more clinicians for the April 2018 MWR convention that the SCWD will host. Bob

All Aboard for the Capitol 400 MidWest Region Conven-tion. Mark the dates: April 13-15, 2018 for a weekend filled with model railroad fun. Headquartered at the Madison Raddison Hotel, the convention kicks off Friday with operating sessions in the afternoon and evening on four local model railroads: Bill and Rose Weber’s Union Pacific, Dr. Bill Clancy’s Rio Grande Pacific, Bob Wundrock MMR’s Rice Lake, Dallas & Menomonie and Ken Hojnacki’s NYO&W Auburn Division. Some great clinics are planned, starting Friday evening and continu-ing Saturday morning and afternoon. Two special presentations will take place Saturday morning. First will be Tom Garver who was an assistant to renowned pho-tographer O. Winston Link, who will provide us with a rare look at the work of OWL, focusing on his Norfolk & Western steam safaris in the 1950s. You don’t want to miss this. Next will be a presentation by Model Railroader magazine editor and modeler extraordinaire, Tony Koester. Saturday afternoon will also begin our tours of local layouts. We’ll be looking for layouts on the north and west sides for Saturday afternoon and all around the Madison area for Sunday. Judged model and photo contests and Non-Rail activities including Project Linus will begin Friday evening and continue Saturday. Saturday night we will have a fine banquet which is included in every registration. In addition to the Region members meeting and the announcement of contest winners, our guest speaker will be Tony Koester, who says he has lots of “inside scoop” on model railroaders that he wants to share. You don’t want to miss Tony’s wry humor. The convention will conclude Sunday, beginning with the Region board of director’s meeting Sunday morning. If you are curious about the inner workings of the Region, the meeting is open to all. We hope to have a large number of layouts open on Sunday and hope you’ll be

one of them. You don’t have to be fully scenicked—lots of folks like to see different construction techniques before they are covered with plaster. Registration will start in September. Rail registration, including the banquet, is $55 and Non-rail, including the banquet, is $40. Watch the SCWD webpage for more information. Go to http://www.nmra-scwd.org and click on CONVENTION at the top, then join us for the fun! Ken Hojnacki Convention Chair

And from the NMRA Going to the Orlando convention? Do you shoot HD video? If so, let's talk! We're trying to expand our NMRA video library of National convention clinics! If you're going to the Orlando convention and have the equipment to shoot HD video (using a video camera equipped with an SD card, rather than a cell phone) of several clinics, please contact Gerry Leone for more details. You'll receive Achievement Program "Volunteer" points for your efforts, plus a huge thanks from our members! The National Train Show is looking for a few strong volunteers. By Bob Amsler Meetings and Trade Show Dept. Mgr. We need several volunteers to work for the National Train Show at this year's Orlando convention. The job will involve loading and unloading manufacturers' trailers. The benefits? We'll pick up your hotel and travel tabs. Email Bob Amsler for all the details.

Trains in the Movies Back to the Future Part 3 Jim Feldman, Guest Contributor In the careening and slightly lunatic third of the Back to the Future trilogy, Marty McFly and Doc Emmet Brown have a couple of major scenes involving trains. The pair is stranded in 1885 and need a way to get their DeLore-an (no gasoline) time machine up to 88 MPH. Their solution is to push it with a train. The pair hijacks a lo-cal train, decouples the locomotive and begins to shove the DeLorean along a spur that ends at an unfinished bridge. They push the locomotive up to the required 88 MPH just as they arrive at the nonexistent bridge, firing

the DeLorean (carrying McFly) into the future (1985 where the bridge exists) and the locomo-tive (from which Doc Brown has escaped) to a fiery death at the bottom of the canyon. Watch at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ktMe0xclxA The hijacked locomotive is Sierra #3, known as the movie star locomo-tive for the hundreds of movies and TV shows in which it has appeared. It is a Rogers 4-6-0 built in 1891 and owned by Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown California. Still used to pull excursion trains, it is clearly the perfect image of the archetypal American steam locomotive.

The crash into the canyon was done with a ¼ size mod-el built by Industrial Light and Magic.

In the future (1985) McFly, still in the DeLorean sitting on the tracks, hears a train approaching; he jumps aside as the oncoming freight destroys the DeLorean. This crash was staged on the Fillmore and Western RR using Ventura County Railway’s #9 leading with VCRY #7 trailing. VCRY #9 is an ALCO S2 built for the Southern Pacific in 1956 as their #1059. Watch at ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu-cxDG2mW8

Shortly thereafter Doc Brown materializes from the past in a new time machine. Known as the Jules Verne train (don’t ask) it appears identical (except that it can fly) to the loco destroyed in the canyon (the Sierra #3). It was in fact, was a one-sided shell built by the crew and at-tached to the side of Sierra #3:

Midwest Region News Paul Mangan The ‘Golden Rails’ Midwest Region spring convention took place in April on the 28th, 29th & 30th.

Thanks to the Rock River Valley Division and all of the convention staff for hosting this event. This convention was called “Golden Rails” because the Rock River Valley Division celebrated its 50th anniversary. Congratulations to all the members and friends of the RRVD. This milestone is the sign that you have had great lead-ership and a very supporting membership over the years. Fantastic job folks! There were lots of layout tours in all scales that were top notch. Clinics, op sessions and other events were going on all weekend including model contests and Project Linus. If you are unfamiliar with Project Linus it is a group that has been gathering at our conventions (both regional and National) as a non-rail function. It is staffed by people that make lots of quilted blankets for children in the hospital. Attendees may take part in this very noble project.

On Friday we were treated to a Hobo Luncheon in Rochelle at the diamond. The weather was a little chilly but the food and fellowship warmed it up a bit.

At the MWR Board meeting on Sunday, yours truly completed his term as President. Our new President Steve Studley and Vice-President Reid Kahrs were installed along with the new directors. One of the items on the agenda was a change to the model contest rules. This change affects the amount of models you are allowed to enter into the judging arena. A person would be limited to 10 models entered with no more than 3 in any given category. Next Year the South Central Wisconsin Division will host the MWR convention. Planning is already underway for the Capitol 400 MWR Convention on April 13th – 15th 2018. Make your plans now. See you by the Rails Paul
