The 57-year-old from Porcupine Plain, who won four Olympic wheelchair racing bronze medals as well as four silver and two bronze Olympic medals in para-nordic skiing, was among those introduced last week as part of the diverse 2019 class entering the Hall of Fame. Bourgonje was the first Canadian to win a Paralympic medal on home snow in 2010 at the Vancouver Paralympic Games. “Canada’s sport community is growing and becoming more inclusive,” Bourgonje said. “That will make Cana- da a stronger nation.” “Growing up in Saskatchewan, I didn’t know there were boundaries. I’m so grateful to the coaches that have helped me along the way and helped pave that path.” Bourgonje was 18 years old when she was injured in a car crash near Porcupine Plain in the spring of 1980. The following fall, she became the first student with a physical disability enrolled in the College of Physical Education at the University of Saskatchewan. She later became the first student with a disability to graduate from the college and the first female student in a wheelchair to graduate from a physical education program at any university in Canada. Bourgonje was a teacher in Saskatoon’s public school system for two decades; a new elementary school named after her opened in the Rosewood neighbourhood in 2017. “I look forward to contributing to others, to the kids,” Bourgonje said. “We’re trying to find kids that can be para-athletes that know they can be the best they can be. There is sport for them. They don’t have to sit on the sidelines.” Two-time Olympic moguls champion Alexandre Bilodeau, NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur and hockey player Jayna Hefford, distance swimmer Vicki Keith and water polo player Waneek Horn-Miller round out the athlete inductees. Ex-CFL commissioner Doug Mitchell and rowing official and coach Guylaine Bernier will enter as builders. The official induction ceremony is set to be held in Toronto in October. Five of the eight are women and two of them — Horn-Miller and Bourgonje — are Indigenous. “To be included with such incredible people, people from all walks of life and experiences in sport and to get a chance to talk to them and hear their stories, there are similarities, but there’s that difference as well and that’s whats great about sport,” Horn-Miller said. Open Monday – Friday 9am – 5:30pm

My boss called me into his office today. “We both know you’re not the brightest spark

here, Simon,” he said, “but over the last 5 years you’ve never been sick or late and I think you deserve a reward. So, how does a brand new

car sound?” “Vrooom! Vrooooom!” I replied.

Larry was a photographer for the N.Y. Times, and was

scheduled to meet a plane on the runway to take him on a

job. “Hit it,” said Larry climbing into the first plane he saw

on the runway. The pilot took off, and was soon in the air.

“OK,” said Larry, “fly low over the trees over there, I want

to take a few pictures.” “What do you mean?” asked the pi-

lot. Larry looked at the pilot and answered a little an-

noyed, “I need to take some pictures for the N.Y. Times, so

please…..” There was a long pause, before the pilot asked

in a shaky voice, “you mean you’re not my

pilot instructor?”

SHA PHC Provider Teams conducting Community Wellness Assessments Saskatchewan Health Authority Primary Health Care Provider Teams will be conducting a series of Community Wellness Assessments throughout the area during the months of May and June. “One of the ways of understanding the wellness needs of a community is to conduct a community wellness assessment,” explained Rita Robertson, SHA Senior Primary Health Educator/Primary Health Care Facilitator. “The community wellness assessment is an opportunity for community members to provide our teams with their feedback and help identify concerns that the community-based Primary Health Care Provider Teams can work on.” This year, the Community Wellness Assessments will be conducted in person at community gathering places. The survey will also be availa-ble on line from May 21 to June 14th through a link on the SHA website at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CommunityWellness2019. Information gathered from the survey will be utilized by PHC Provider Teams to develop action plans to address wellness needs that have been identified by community members. Community suggestions that are identified and are beyond the Provider Team’s ability to address will be forwarded to the appropriate agency. The feedback provided by members of the community is critical to the work done by the local Provider Teams. To participate in the Community Wellness Assessment in your community or to complete the survey online go to SHA website at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CommunityWellness2019.

Two guys were playing golf, one of them was about to swing the golf club when he noticed a funeral

procession going by on the street. The man stopped in mid-swing and closed his eyes and said a short prayer. The other man truly inspired, remarked,

clearing his throat, “wow that was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.” “Well”, the other

man said “I was married to her for 35 years.”
