GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Hello WHCA Community,

Hope everyone is staying safe and is healthy in this crazy time. The staff and I have been very busy getting the building ready for September for all of our user groups. The place will certainly look and feel different when you come here. Summit Kids were running day camps for June, July, and August, and that helped us understand what we needed to get done for cleaning and signage. July saw us re-open the Squash and Fitness Centre for squash and workout bookings. We learned how to operate with online bookings. On the arena side, we re-opened for hockey camps during the day, and NCHL league games and Learn to Skate at night. All these soft openings allowed us a chance to see and feel the flow of our building, where hand sanitizing units needed to be, signage and floor markings for direction, and where people would enter and exit.

We hope we have everything correct for September. We know rules can change (for better or worse) but we will react to those changes if they occur.

Stay safe, healthy, and have a wonderful day!

SCHOOL SHOUT-OUTS

The Start of the School Yearby Lisa Kelly

As summer ends, we welcome the start of the school year, which brings with it the start of many new friend-ships and lots of fun at the West Hillhurst Community Preschool. Our incredible team has been working hard throughout the summer to ensure that the Preschool is ready for reopening, taking direction from Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Ministry of Child and Family Services (our licensing body), while ensur-ing that we have lots of fun and exciting experiences planned for the children.

Our wonderful Miss Giulliana will be the teacher for our Tuesday/Thursday morning class as well as continuing our Spanish programming on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. We are pleased that Miss Lisa will be returning as the teacher for Tuesday/Thursday after-noon classes and has filled the newly created role of Pre-school Administrator. Miss Nancy will be our Teaching Assistant for all the afternoon classes. This year, we wel-come Miss Cicely, who will teach our Monday, Wednes-day and Friday morning class and Miss Payton, who will be our Teaching Assistant for all morning classes. Our teachers are a vital component to the Preschool’s suc-cess, and we are thrilled to have a dynamic and wonder-ful team.

We are once again pleased to sell boxes of delicious ap-ples from Davison Orchards in B.C. All sales help support and enhance our preschool curriculum. The deadline to order apples is Friday, September 18. To order apples or learn more about us, please visit our website at www.westhillhurstpreschool.com.

Warm Mediterranean climate; serving to cool, aerate and discourage infestations.

About the Wine: A blend of 70 per cent Grenache Noir and 30 per cent Syrah, FTLL Red pours a pale ruby red; impressing with a bouquet of cloves, dark cherries, and stewed red apples. Light-bodied and smooth in-mouth; flavours of liquorice, ripe plums and mulberries inspire and lead into a finish that’s fresh, clean, and long.

About Pairing: Grilled lamb, baby-back ribs, Portugese Ovelha cheese.

About a Culinary Connection: Trufficulture - the craft of modern truffle farming - was developed in the nearby hamlet of Croagnes in 1808.

About Sustainability: Certified Organic and Biodynam-ic by Agriculture France.

About the Backstory: After suc-cessful careers in luxury fashion,

partners Frédéric Biousse and Guillame Foucher pivoted into

historical property restora-tion, purchasing Domaine de

Fontenille (DdF) in 2013. Built in 1638, the partners converted the DdF cháteau into a luxury spa, including Michelin-starred restaurant Le Champ des Lunes. Up-grading winemaking operations as well, the partners elevated the winery into a forward-thinking, earth-friendly dynamo.

About Foresight: To direct the elevation, Biousse and Foucher retained distinguished agronomist Laurence Bergemont. A Provence specialist, Bergemont replanted the estate with a mix of vineyards and vegetable gar-dens in harmony with the local ecosystem.

About the Region: Making wine for more than 2,000 years, the Lubéron Valley is relatively under-appre-ciated within French wine space. Situated in central Provence, the Lubéron connects the Alps in the east with the Rhône River Valley to the west, within the boundaries of UNESCO-listed Lubéron Regional Nat-ural Park Reserve. It sits in the shadow of Mont Ven-toux, the gruelling climb of the Tour de France’s 12th

stage.

A collection of picturesque hamlets and villages, the Lubéron forms the setting of Peter Mayle’s enchanting novel, A Year in Provence.

About Terroir: Featuring slightly steep, stony, clay/limestone slopes, the Lubéron Foothills offer drainage and prime sun exposure to local viticulture. Seventy kms inland, trademark Mistral winds impact the region’s

SAFE & SOUND

Back-to-School SafetyAlberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students about some road safety tips, as roadways become more congested, with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists both have an important role to play—road safety is a shared responsibility.

Motorists•Avoid talking on cell phones, texting, or any other be-

havior that diverts your attention away from driving;•Give right-of-way to pedestrians who have activated

overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street corner;•Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles—other than

those that are parked—in school zones or playground zones, during posted hours.

Around school buses•Flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to

stop—motorists should do likewise; •No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP,

when approaching a school bus with activated flash-ing red lights—unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you;•Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert

and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Pedestrians•Cross only at marked crosswalks, or street corners that

have clear visibility from all directions; •Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the

street, and keep distractions to a minimum;•When activating overhead crossing lights, pause be-

fore stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop;•Stay within the crosswalk lines;•Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the

street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop;•If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s

hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing; •Remember: children learn by observing. By dem-

onstrating safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

Your letter can be as long or as short as you need it to be.” If you sent a submission as part of this project, it will be incorporated into the Glenbow’s permanent collection.

When we put out a call, we asked our supporters to share their thoughts. “Perhaps interested users of Nose Hill could compose a short piece about their experiences when using the Park. What did you observe during the ‘lockdown/stay home’ period, in the latter part of March through late May? Do you have stories about nature, wildlife, people enjoying their time on the Hill? How can you transform that into a perspective from the Hill?”

A natural area is a park or portion of a park where the primary role is the protection of an undisturbed or rela-tively undisturbed area of land with a natural or native plant community. The Natural Areas Management Plan provides guidance. Maintenance methods like mowing and weed control will be different for natural habitat ar-eas than for ornamental parks. As well, people and pets may be restricted to certain parts of natural environ-ment areas in order to protect the plants and animals native to the site. Increasing park usage where it is un-sustainable is prohibited. Where recreational use and the long-term survival of significant habitats conflict, protection of the resource will take precedence.

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

The City’s Calgary.Ca Map Gallery is Growing to Reflect Our City’s Changing Needs2020 has been a year of constant change, and our map gallery is the most direct and accessible way to access City of Calgary maps. Over the past year alone, eight new maps have been added to help make the gallery relevant and valuable for citizens.

The Solar Potential Map on the Calgary.ca map gallery has been updated to use the latest available LiDAR data. The map features City solar projects, and provides infor-mation about the number of panels, location, year of construction, type of system, and approximate annual energy yield. It can be used as a preliminary solar assess-ment tool for roof top installations.

Certainty in Uncertain TimesNow, more than ever, we are hearing about inferior health products as companies and importers race to stock shelves with millions of face masks, gloves, disin-fectants, etc. in response to the pandemic.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in some inferior and un-safe products reaching consumers.

As a result, Canadians are looking for certainty and reas-surance with the products they are buying. (Of course, importing items through the mail direct from other countries does come with its own risks.)

The federal government provides valuable resources for Canadians to ensure that they are safe and healthy. You can find the link at www.lenwebbermp.ca/safety-notices-recalls or download a mobile app.

The Health Canada website provides information about consumer product, food and health product recalls, and safety notices.

Sometimes these notices contain information about potentially deadly issues, and other times it may draw attention to a mislabelling or packaging issue.

For example, finding out that a product you bought at the grocery store may have come into contact with pea-nuts may not be an issue for you, but it could be deadly for someone else. With the right information, you can decide on your best course of action.

Each notice will explain what product is affected, how to identify it (including photos), and what you should do. You can also report health or safety concerns about a product which can help identify widespread concerns.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistribut-ed, sold, or even given away in Canada.

Many faults and problems with medical devices come to the attention of Health Canada from reports from Ca-nadians like you. You can report any complaints involv-ing medical devices to Health Canada by calling toll-free at 1-800-267-9675. You should also make the store that sold the item aware of any problems or concerns.

At the time of writing, the Government of Alberta just announced its relaunch plan for the fall school term. Many children, parents, and educators will be entering an uncertain and stressful part of the year. Unfortunate-ly, COVID-19 isn’t the only thing generating stress for back-to-school.

Every year, September marks a significant uptick in calls to the City about traffic safety. Mostly that comes from parents who worry whether their children will be safe to walk to school or bike through their own communities.

Fortunately, Council endorsed a reduction of the 50 km/h unposted speed limit to help improve the safety of our neighbourhood streets. Those are the streets in front of your homes and the streets that your kids walk on to school. Council will debate this fall whether the new default for neighbourhood streets is 30 km/h, 40 km/h, or a combination.

The World Health Organization reports that pedestrians are 90% likely to survive when struck by automobiles travelling at 30 km/h, 60% at 40 km/h, and less than 20% at 50 km/h. Lower speeds also reduce the likelihood of collisions occurring in the first place.

We also know there is a massive financial cost to colli-sions in Calgary. 10,250 collisions happen on neigh-bourhood streets annually, contributing roughly $300 million toward Calgary’s overall $1.19 billion in societal costs from collisions.

A speed limit reduction would cut up to 2,530 colli-sions and $74.3 million in societal costs, annually. It will make our neighbourhood streets more liveable. It will reduce costs to society. It will mean that fewer of your neighbours are killed or injured as a conse-quence of simply walking, cycling, or driving on our streets. It will make it safer for your kids to walk to school and to have greater independence in explor-ing their communities.

This summer, I’ve been honoured to participate in nu-merous significant conversations with Mountain View community members and advocacy groups, covering a range of topics and areas of concern as much uncer-tainty remains in our daily lives.

Top of mind for many parents, teachers, school staff, and others is the return to school amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I was proud to see my colleagues in the NDP caucus present Safe Schools, Successful Students, an alternative relaunch plan for Alberta’s schools. We hope that all 15 recommendations in the proposal – focusing on student and staff safety, funding for teachers and PPE, and safe transportation measures for students – will be implemented by the UCP government.

NDP Education Critic Sarah Hoffman said when present-ing the plan in mid-July that “governing is about choices and priorities. Albertans have repeatedly told us that children’s safety must be a top priority. While these rec-ommendations come with a cost, the consequences of pretending things can operate normally without conse-quence will be far more costly.”

You can view the plan online and sign the petition to support a safe return to school at: https://www.albertandpcaucus.ca/take-action/successful-students.

During these difficult times, it’s good to see friends and neighbours coming together for one another’s safety and protection. Combined with physical distanc-ing, good hand hygiene, and staying home when sick, masks are an effective tool to limit the virus’s spread.

The City of Calgary’s Face Coverings bylaw became ac-tive on August 1, with masks required in indoor public areas, and public vehicles (taxis, rideshares, and public transit). Free masks are available, while supplies last, at the city’s YMCA facilities.

For guidance for you and your family regarding the proper use of masks, there are tips from the Government of Alberta and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, available online: https://www.alberta.ca/masks.aspx.

As always, I’m happy to hear from you. Please keep in touch through my constituency office.
