East Orange Catholic High School Alumnae Association

President’s letter

May, 2009

Dear Members of the East Orange Catholic High School Alumnae Association:

The East Orange Catholic High School Alumnae Association starts its second decade of activity, and is stronger than ever. We have now awarded over $14,000 in scholarship funds, to help young women with their educational needs. We continue to reunite alumnae, faculty and friends; we are delighted to see the suc- cess of the women who graduated from EOCH; and we are thankful for the tireless efforts of those who taught and raised us, especially during those teenage years, which can be a challenge!

We are grateful for all of the support our Association has received from its mem- bers. Now, more than ever, students in Catholic high schools appreciate our help. The current economic climate has stretched many families’ resources, and finding tuition funds is harder than ever. To our many supportive EOCH alum- nae, we send our deepest gratitude, on behalf of the Association, and on behalf of the young women whom we support. When we think about how we learn, we often note that actions speak louder than words. In our case, your generosity speaks volumes, and is as important a lesson as any other lesson in life.

I would ask you all to keep each other in your prayers. So many of our alumnae and faculty find themselves in situations of pain and loss. Perhaps this is normal at this stage in our lives. It seems that not a week goes by without sad news, sometimes even more painful because of its unexpectedness.

Each May we celebrate Mothers’ Day, recognizing and honoring those who brought us into this world. And each May we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary, who brought Our Lord into this world, and on whom we can count to provide us with the strength and comfort we need when we experience difficulty.

Mary’s faith is astonishing to contemplate – an angel encounters Mary as a young woman and she willingly does what the Father requests of her; she encounters events over the next thirty-plus years that would overwhelm any person and ulti- mately loses her Son. But she never loses her faith. For me, it is hard to fathom the depths of Mary’s faith, they are so great. But it is not hard to turn to Mary for the comfort children derive from their mothers.

I pray that each of you will be consoled by Mary when you need her, and will gain strength from her example. I pray that each of you will be heartened by knowing that the community of EOCH is with you, in sorrowful times as well as joyous ones.

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession,

was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee,

O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand,

sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of thy Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me.

Amen.

From our entire Board of Trustees, I send gratitude and best wishes to all of you, especially in this month of Our Lady, who blesses us every day.

150th Anniversary logo centers us in the charism of Char- ity and recognizes in the words,

“Generation to Generation,” the continuous stream of the works and pres- ence of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth since 1859 and into years to come. The blue and green colors represent our relationship to each other and to all created life that surrounds us. The symbol imagines a continu- ous flow of movement from past to future and the dynamic nature of our mission and ministry. See important dates on page 3…………...

The EOCH Alumnae Association has given scholarships to students at four high schools taught by the Sisters of Charity in New Jersey this past year. These are samples and selections of the many letters and cards we have received in thanks for helping these deserving young ladies have a chance to continue their education in a Catholic High School.

Students given SCHOLARSIPS

Immaculate Conception H.S. To the Alumnae Association of EOCH...I would like to thank you so much for rewarding me with this scholarship. I cannot find the words to describe to you how overwhelmed I am to receive such great news. My mom and I are ecstatic and will be forever grateful for your generosity…...I am a 17 –year old resident of East Orange and I am of a single parent household. I have been raised by my mother; to hold my standards as a Christian, a student, and a young lady of today’s society. She has been the driving force in my life and has gone above and beyond to take care of me… I would like you to know that I am an outstanding student at Immaculate Conception HS. Academically, I remain on the Honor Roll and maintain a “B” average. I am also very active in extra-curricular activities. I am a member of the National Honor Society, Student Coun- cilmember, poet/singer for the United People of Color Performance Troupe, member of the track-and-field team, member of Praise Dancing, and I volunteer my time at school. I show great leadership abilities amongst my peers and have been elected Junior Class President in 2008. I take school very seriously and show that I am a phenomenal student-athlete. ...Track-and-field has been a blessing in my life. It has brought me great fame and exposure. I plan to use my talent to its full advantage, so that I can attend a great post-secondary institution. Even though I’m very good in track, it is not my whole future. My goal is to pursue a major in secondary education; English. I want to hopefully become a secondary school teacher or possibly even a college professor. I have so many dreams and ambitions that accumulate in my mind daily. I strive for success and believe that the impossible is possible. …..Again I thank you so much for blessing me and my family. You are pouring into my life and planting a seed of success. You, Ms. Martin, and your organization are helping me continue my education. This will lift the stress and burden off of my mother’s shoulders. I am eternally grateful for your kindness. I will be sure to uphold the standards I have set. I will be sure to not let you down. You can be assured that you are doing a great thing. God Bless you and love loving generous heart…..

Marylawn of the Oranges From a freshman this year…I just want to thank you with all my heart for this scholarship! My family and I are grateful for what you are doing. We all know that everyone goes through tough times, and I am one of them. It is really hard these days for my family and I, but with God in our lives anything is possible. He puts obstacles in our lives to make us stronger, and in the end you are one of my blessings. Knowing that I have someone that I do not know who supports me makes me strive to do even more to make my family and you proud. Thank you once again for everything. May God bless you with many blessings in your life!

Mother Seton Regional H.S. From the mother of this year’s scholarship recipient: Thank you so much for the generous scholarship awarded to my daughter. We’re so grateful to have this financial assistance to attend Mother Seton H.S. (My daughter) loves her school, and works very hard to keep up her grades. We deeply appreciate the generosity of the EOCH Alumni Association.

St. Vincent Academy Dear EOCH Alumnae: ... As my four years at Saint Vincent Academy come to a close, I look back at all the things I am most grateful for and one of those things was receiving this grant. Because of your support, I was able to continue my studies at Saint Vincent Academy with the future open right in front of me. I have many choices to where it will go. In the fall I plan on attending St. Peter's College in Jersey City. I will major in Biology and hopefully move into the Physicians Assistants program. I say all of this because it was made possi- ble with your help. I once again thank you for your support because it really helped my journey become easier. Sincerely……

From Sr. Margaret Killough ...We are most grateful for the gift of $1,500.00 which we received from the Alum- nae of EOCH. Your commitment to supporting Catholic Education for young women makes it possible for us to continue our mission here in Newark. The recipient and her family appreciate receiving the EOCH scholar- ship. You will be pleased to know that (the student selected) is fully involved both in her own education and in the community here at St. Vincent Academy. We anticipate that she will continue to grow over the next three years here at SVA….Your support means a great deal to us always, but your increasing the amount of the award is a special blessing this year. In this difficult economy, we marvel anew at the capacity of our extended com- munity of alumnae and friends to reach out with compassion to help us in our need…..Thank you for this generous gift, for the work that went into making it possible and for what it says about the value you place on the work we do. As we strive to develop in our students the character, courage and skills necessary to open doors so often closed to them, we are heartened by support and encouragement from women who were edu- cated by the Sisters of Charity. ... May God bless the Alumnae of EOCH as you have blessed us.

Continued from Page 1—Virginia Daire Loewe Ginger went on to do appellate work for the Florida Public Service Commission and taught legal writing at FSU. She was in private practice for a number of years and served as General Counsel for the Florida Association for Retarded Citizens (where she published a book on estate planning for families with developmentally disabled family members) and the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (where she created a statewide Clearinghouse of Florida attorneys to train them to represent victims and to assist them in doing so). The Florida Supreme Court created a blue-ribbon panel to study the effects of gender on the out- comes of cases in Florida, and she served as the Director of the Florida Supreme Court’s Gender Bias Study. Florida was the first state in the nation to study the issue of prostitution as a gender crime. Later she was elected president of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers. U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno spoke at her inauguration. Ginger has a picture of herself with Janet Reno – Ginger said she felt very small standing next to her! Ginger is only 4’9”.

In 1996 Ginger left seven years of service as an Assistant Attorney Gen- eral to run for elected office against an incumbent judge whose later claim to fame was to decide Bush v. Gore. Afterwards she served as the Agency Clerk for both the Department of Children and Family Services and the Agency for Health Care Administration. In 2001 while in her office at work a man came in and helped change her priorities by putting a gun to her head. Given the Irish gift of gab, she talked him into not killing her, but she retired soon after.
