AMORIS LÆTITIA FROM THE HOLY FATHER, FRANCIS

The Church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches. “In virtue of the sacrament of matrimony, every family becomes, in effect, a good for the Church. From this standpoint, reflecting on the interplay between the family and the Church will prove a precious gift for the Church in our time. The Church is good for the family, and the family is good for the Church. The safeguarding of the Lord’s gift in the sacrament of matrimony is a concern not only of individual families but of the entire Christian com-munity”. The experience of love in families is a perennial source of strength for the life of the Church. “The unitive end of marriage is a constant summons to make this love grow and deepen. Through their union in love, the couple experiences the beauty of fatherhood and motherhood, and shares plans, trials, expectations and concerns; they learn care for one another and mutual forgiveness. In this love, they celebrate their happy mo-ments and support each other in the difficult passages of their life together… The beauty of this mutual, gratui-tous gift, the joy which comes from a life that is born and the loving care of all family members – from toddlers to seniors – are just a few of the fruits which make the response to the vocation of the family unique and irre-placeable”, both for the Church and for society as a whole. (Chapter 3, 87-88)

PARISH CALENDAR

July 9 Jazzin’ On the River (Society of St. Vincent de Paul).

Pope Francis’ July Intentions

Universal: That the aged, marginalized, and those who have no one may find–even within the huge cities of the world–opportunities for encounter and solidarity.

Evangelization: That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare them wisely for their mission.

FOCUS ON THE MISSION “There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but are many things that we give ourselves to vitally important? Paul relates in today’s second reading many of our concerns which are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he re-turned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The LORD tells Elijah to anoint Elisha as prophet to succeed him (1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21).

Psalm — You are my inheritance, O Lord (Psalm 16).

Second Reading — Use your freedom in Christ to serve one another through love (Galatians 5:1, 13-18).

Gospel — While journeying to Jerusalem, Jesus speaks of the costs of discipleship (Luke 9:51-62).
