Remembering and Praying for the Faithful Departed

The practice of praying for the dead is rooted first in Christian belief in eternal life that come from Jesus’ teachings and are foreshadowed in the disciples experience that Jesus had risen from the dead. Although we are separated from our earthly body at death, our relationship with God transcends death itself.

Praying for the dead has further origins in our belief in the Communion of the Saints. Living members of this community often pray and intercede for each other by prayers and through spiritual support. The faithful de-parted continue to be members of the Body of Christ, of the Communion of all the baptized. We believe that as human beings we need of God’s mercy and forgiveness and after death there will be a process or period of purification. We continue to aid our brothers and sisters with our prayers and ask them to help us with theirs.

Prayers for those who have died often begin at the bedside with family members. In many places it is custom-ary to meet and pray for nine days or a novena. The Order of Christian Funerals has a Vigil Service, Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal. We remember them with Masses on special occasions throughout the year or on the anniversary of their death. At every Eucharist we remember those who have died and ask God to be mer-ciful and remove any barriers that might keep them from entering into eternal peace and life.

THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it a celebrity, super-athlete or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to fol-low in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be more like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world.
