Even with the latest update from the Center for Disease Control allowing vaccinated people to gather indoors, your pastors and safety team will continue to take a measured approach to opening our building. Irrespective of the pandemics unfolding timelines, we have major work going on inside our building and on our roof in the latter part of June and into July. In order to make our facility as safe as possible we will be replacing the remaining three HVAC units from 1995, along with updating ductwork, plumbing, and the indoor roofing tiles. While we may be able to gather inside, we still cannot sing safely inside, so Sunday worship will inevitably look different for a time. Here are the options we will offer in the coming months, knowing that we will need to be nimble as new information may change our plans: 1. Bend Church will continue to offer our online worship indefinitely for those who wish to continue to stay at home. We have been surprised at how many new faces are joining us and we will continue to nurture this new community online. 2. In the months of June and July we encourage you to participate in Patio Church. These groups will meet outdoors in a hosts backyard or patio for worship using our online service and some supplemental materials. Pastors will visit each group that forms over these two months to provide in person communion for the first time in over a year! If you are interested in hosting a Patio Church or participating in one; please contact Pastor Nicole. 3. We will start hosting worship within the sanctuary starting in August. Currently we are limited to only 50 people in the room, but as our community reaches a 70% vaccination rate that may change. Your worship team is currently planning to hold outside hymn singsfor 15 minutes at the start of our time, and will then move inside for a modified worship time. We are all disappointed that we cannot sing inside quite yet, but if nothing else, weve learned to be flexible in this last crazy year! I know you are as thrilled as I am that there is an end in sight to this pandemic. Please reach out with any dreams, questions, or concerns. Many blessings, Pastor Jen Pastor Jen Stuart

Kits for Kids

The ladies of First Presbyterian Church will be packing up “Kits for Kids” bags on

June 15. The session will be outdoors in their parking lot. They would love some

Bend Church helpers. Please contact Jill Gentry if you would like to help.

Crafters are Back!

At long last we will resume our crafting group on Monday, June 7 at 10:00AM.

If you are unfamiliar with our group, we have traditionally met every Monday at

10:00 in Fellowship Hall. We work on projects there, and at home, that we can sell

at our UMW Holiday Bazaar in November. If you enjoy sewing, knitting, paper

crafts, painting, or any other medium, we invite you to join us.

You don’t have to come every week. We understand. We all have a life!

If you have questions, contact Jill Gentry.

Stay well and stay safe!

Bend Church Open Door Ministries It is hard to believe that we are half way through 2021! The second half of the year brings a great deal of hope and promise for the congregation and the operations of the Open Door Cafe . If you are looking for a way to support the Open Door Cafe , I invite you to stop into The Dollar Tree and purchase some hygiene items. Each Wednesday we give away deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and shaving cream. The need for these items is steady and all donations are welcome. As a reminder, the Open Door Cafe ’s mailroom is looking for volunteers to help us staff this ministry that operates 5 days a week. Training will be provided. Please email Micheal Harris at [email protected]. May you have a sunny and blessed Summer! Micheal Harris Volunteer Coordinator

Bend Church & Central Oregon Villages

For several years a small group of concerned community members associated with several Bend churches made plans, through in-person and Zoom meetings, for the purpose of establishing a managed camp for unhoused persons in the Bend area as an alternative shelter approach. Those in our congregation who have been involved with this working group are Chuck Hemingway, Skipper Lay and Pastor Jen Stuart. These efforts culminated in late 2020 with the working group and Bend Church entering into an Affiliation Agreement with SquareOne Villages of Eugene.

SquareOne pioneered the “village” concept in Eugene in 2013 and has been successfully operating what is called OpportUNITY Village in Eugene since that time. SquareOne agreed to come to Bend and establish a managed camp using their successful “village” model, but only if Bend Church would agree to be the fiscal agent. While OpportUNITY Village in Eugene has 30 village residents, the proposal for Bend is to establish a “village” with 20 campsites that would be operated along the lines of a state park model. There would be two “loops” of 10 campsites each, a camp host for each loop, and a camp director. The goal is to get the “village” going later this year. SquareOne Villages and Bend Church have submitted an application to the City of Bend which asks the City to allow establishment of the proposed managed camp (village) on city land or within the Urban Growth Boundary. We have also approached Deschutes County with the possibility of using county land within the city limits.

The effort is being formalized under the name “Central Oregon Villages”, a name suggested by Pastor Jen and affirmed by the working group. The hope is that once the first Village is up and running successfully, there can be other villages established using this model. We are currently forming a Board and Advisory Committee and registering with the state as a charitable entity. The Bend Church goal is to turn over operation of the Village to this new non-profit corporation, Central Oregon Villages. Bend Church has committed $100,000 and SquareOne/Bend Church have received a $317,525 HUD grant from the Oregon Housing and Community Services Agency to get the Village up, running and operating. Chuck has joined the Bend Church staff full time to facilitate operations with SquareOne Villages.

For further information Chuck can be contacted at [email protected], or Pastor Jen at [email protected].

Park/Garden Update

The Environmental Center, Bend Montessori School, The Boys and Girls Club, and Amity Creek Elementary are working together with us to change

our lower parking area into a learning garden. The goal of the Kansas Avenue Learning Garden at The Environmental Center (catacorner to our building) is

to embed sustainability in local schools by providing students access to the environment through integrated academics and direct experience in the

garden. The Environmental Center needs to add on to their building and was looking for a space to move their garden. This partnership will allow the entire community to benefit and provide a beautiful, calming space for

children and adults to enjoy nature's beauty on our property. If this project is something you’d like to learn more about or become involved

in the planning process, please let us know.

Roof / HVAC Construction The church’s Board of Trustees – Larry Herrmann, Skipper Lay, and Mick Sears, have approved the contracts to begin work on replacing the roof covering the educational and office building annex. Work will begin on June 20th. Although repaired in the last 10 years, the roof has been a constant problem. Several attempts to patch have been attempted and even the contractor from the last major repair suggested a new roof. The roof material is a polyvinyl material known as TPO. As a part of this project, the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) units will also be replaced. It had been planned to only replace a single unit this year, but with COVID and the spotlight on refreshing air in public spaces, it was felt now was the time to replace all of them.

In addition to the new roof and HVAC units, roof drainage will be addressed and the HVAC units moved to better locations with new wiring and piping. This is a major project with support from our Pastors, Finance team and Treasurer, and our Facility Manager, Danny Lange. The Board appreciates everyone's efforts to evaluate proposals and decide on an action plan. Next up for the Trustees will be to evaluate the roof over the sanctuary, which is also badly in need of replacement. It is going to be a busy year as we also ensure the safe return to in person activities as well.

Respectfully Submitted, Larry Hermann

A Message from Pastor Nicole

I am so excited to write more about one of the ways in which we are going to be able to meet together this summer. As outlined in Pastor Jen’s article, we are beginning “Patio Church” as an in-person option. Each week small groups will meet in Hosts’ outdoor spaces for worship utilizing our online worship as well as supplemental materials. As of this month, we are still asked not to sing indoors, and as some in our community will not be

vaccinated, we are hoping that this outdoor option is a safe, positive way to gather. Each week, Jen and I will travel to one of the groups to offer communion and pastoral presence. In the New Testament we read about the beginnings of the Christian movement. Small house churches embedded in loving, generous communities offered a supportive space for people to worship and grow together. Small groups are also part of our Methodist tradition and provide an opportunity for deepening our relationships with one another and our faith. For some, this type of gathering may be a positive way to transition back to communal worship. All are invited to participate while following safety guidelines. More information about specific groups will be posted on our website, Facebook pages, and in our weekly online worship services and publications. Stay on the lookout for these details if you are interested. If you have outdoor space that you would like to share, if you are interested in joining a group, or if you have questions, please contact me: [email protected] or 541-382-1672.

Blessings,

Pastor Nicole

COVENANTAL RESTORATION: A 12 SESSION FILM SERIES ON FAITH AND RACE

Racism and oppression have a long and painful past and present. It is an open, aching human wound that reflects a fracture in our relationship with God. Understanding how it was promoted and is still alive and acting out in the construct of our beliefs and systems and structures is the beginning of caring for this wound. In this series on faith and race we pray God would bring you hope, renew your mind, enliven your spirit, and gift you with the virtues of the Divine’s own heart. May God strengthen your stand, inspire your movement towards God’s dream for humanity, and increase Kingdom square footage with each step you make in Love. This short film/discussion series will be led by Pastor Jen and Pastor Nicole on Zoom, Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30pm through the summer months.
