My Brothers: Having spent six weeks in the hospital--three in South Lake and three in Health South Rehab in Altamonte Springs, preparing this column caught me off guard. My first order of business has been working on the Master Mason Degree, both the first and second parts. Although not yet regularly attending rehearsals I assure you that when the time comes, I will be ready. The second order of business was representing Groveland 190 at 187th Annual Grand Communication. Rest assured I voted the legis-lation in the same manner you asked me to vote. My third order of business was, as a member of the Board of Trus-tees of the Masonic Home in St. Pete, making a presentation to the Craft during the 187th Annual Grand Communication. Finally, just before I became ill I taught a Master Mason 1,2,3 class at Leesburg Lodge. I still have those examinations to grade. Thank you for bearing with me during this unusually long illness. As my health improves I will be spending more time working toward making Groveland 190 the finest Blue Lodge in Florida.

Bro. Jeff R. Snyder, Junior Warden (Lisa) Ph: 407-409-0100

E-mail: [email protected]

APRON APRON: A symbol of honorable labor. The material of the Masonic Apron, lambskin, is a symbol of innocence, as the lamb has always been. But for "innocence" do not read "ignorant". The word describes those who do no injury to other, not those to whom injury may be done because they know little. There is a special symbolism in the different ways in which the Entered Ap-prentice, the Fellow Craft, and the Master Mason are taught to wear their aprons, emblematic of the progress from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge. The use of the apron is extremely old, not, as with the Operative Mason, as the protector of clothing and body against tools and stone, but as a Badge of Honor. It was so used by the priests of Israel, by candidates for the mysteries of Mithras in Persia, by the ancient Japanese in religious worship. Ethiopia knew aprons as did Egypt. In all times and climes, it has been a badge of distinction. It is as such that a Mason wears it. Color and material are im-portant in its symbolism but Masonry admits the "symbol of the symbol" as for instance, an electric light in place of a candle. Hence, a Mason has more than once been "properly clothed" when the lambskin aprons of the Lodge were all in use and he came through the tiled door clad in a white handkerchief. The apron is said to be more ancient and more honorable that certain orders and decorations.

The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Philip, Duke of Burgun-dy, in 1429.

The Roman Eagle was Rome's symbol and ensign of power and might a hundred years before Christ.

The Order of the Star was created by John II of France in the middle of the fourteenth century.

The Order of the Garter was founded by Edward III of England in 1349 for himself and twenty-five knights of the Garter. The Masonic Apron is more ancient than these is a provable fact. In averring that is more honorable, the premise "when worthily worn" is understood. The apron is "more honorable that the Star and Garter" when all that it teaches is

exemplified in the life of the wearer. R W Joseph F. Basler, PDDGM Fraternally, Jeff Snyder , J.W.

50 YEAR MASTER MASONS

THE LODGE FUNERAL A new Worshipful Master in a small town spent the first four days making personal visits to each member of his Lodge, inviting them to come to his first meeting. The following Thursday, the Lodge was all but empty. Accordingly, the Worshipful Master placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that" because the Lodge was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Masonic Burial. The funeral to be held in the Masonic Temple the following Monday afternoon the notice said. Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the Altar, they saw a closed casket, smothered in flowers. After the Chaplain delivered the eulogy, the Worshipful Master opened the coffin and invited his Brethren to come forward and pay their final respects to their Dead Lodge. Filled with curiosity, as to what would represent the corpse of a dead lodge, all the Brethren eagerly lined up to look into the coffin. Each Mourner peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a Large Mirror. His point...........Remember the Obligations we all took my Brethren to support our LODGE. Hopefully, his actions were taken to heart by his Lodge Brethren. What he did was to tell us that without the Brethren attending Lodges we will all have a Masonic Lodge Funeral to attend. The Author is Unknown, but his writings are a message to all of us. Editor‘s Note: Brothers take heed! Do not forget the Lodge, Lodge Property & All Assets belong to all Members equally and you should be aware how it is being used & taken care of.
