Food For

Thought….a

note from

Companions as

we are in this work with you, we beg you,

please don't squander one bit of this

marvelous life God has given us. God

reminds us, I heard your call in the nick of

time; The day you needed me, I was there

to help. Well, now is the right time to

listen, the day to be helped. Don't put it

off; don't frustrate God's work by showing

up late, throwing a question mark over

everything we're doing. Our work as God's

servants gets validated—or not—in the

details. People are watching us as we stay

at our post, alertly, unswervingly, in hard

times, tough times, bad times; when we're

beaten up, jailed, and mobbed; working

hard, working late, working without

eating; with pure heart, clear head, steady

hand; in gentleness, holiness, and honest

love; when we're telling the truth, and

when God's showing his power; when

we're doing our best setting things right;

when we're praised, and when we're

blamed; slandered, and honored; true to

our word, though distrusted; ignored by

the world, but recognized by God;

terrifically alive, though rumored to be

dead; beaten within an inch of our lives,

but refusing to die; immersed in tears, yet

always filled with deep joy; living on

handouts, yet enriching many; having

nothing, having it all. 2nd

Cor 6 (The

Message Bible)

The news of tornados and

floods keeps pouring in as the

southern part of our nation gets

hit extremely hard. The

devastation is widespread and

the loss of life and property is

hard to fathom. With all the talk

about “rapture” lately and being

left behind, it would be easy

enough for us to fall into a state

of constant fear or an attitude of

“why bother, what good can I

3 pastor's page

do?” But it is exactly into this state

of mind that scripture calls us to

action. It is the face of adversity

and loss that the church rises like

a phoenix. We don’t have to look

far to see how our congregation

responds to needs, both near and

far. The mobile food pantry

recently hosted here and the

disaster response team’s trips and

involvement in rebuilding in our

community to name only two. And

consider the immediate action

taken by the ELCA both to tsunami

victims in Japan and tornado and

flood victims in the south as well

as needs elsewhere. (Check out

www.elca.org ) We are a people

who like St. Paul said get beaten

down, but we get back up again to

go on about the mission that God

has called us as this community of

faith.

Closer to home we have

needs right within our own

building; from the boiler

replacement to the need for more

volunteers for V.B.S. and the many

ministries that are flowing from

this house of faith. There is no

doubt the need is great; at times it

can seem overwhelming, but we

have been given this gift of new

life for a purpose; so that through

our efforts, through our hard

work, our gifts, that the love of

God might be revealed in the

midst of this need, in the midst of

the fears of this world and smack

dab in the middle of whatever

crisis may arise. Being a witness

for Christ is seldom an easy thing.

If our goal in life is to take the

easy road, than being a follower of

Jesus is going to run contrary to

that goal. But if we have taken this

path knowing that living a life of

service to the kingdom of God can

be wrought with trials and

tribulations, we can bear witness

to an incredible God filled with

grace, pouring out mercy and love

on all of God’s children.

It is probably true, that

when we are at our lowest, we

perceive our need for God to be

great. What scripture reminds us

is that many outside of our field of

vision or our faith community are

at their lowest. They need what

we have; the hope in a God who

has walked down this path, who

has promised to be with us and

who daily shows forth a love that

is beyond our comprehension. In

sharing this joy and hope with

others, we increase our own; in

giving away, we receive far more

than we know. What an awesome

God we serve!

Serving with you,

7 history alive

First Altar of Trinity Lutheran

Church

Recently received has been some

remarkable information of

historical value to Trinity from

Lester Dankert, charter member

of Trinity Lutheran Church. With

regard to the very first altar used

by members of Trinity, the

following quotations were

received in a memo from Lester.

"In mid-June 1942, concurrently

with the coming to Midland of

the Lutheran Church's Midland

Mission first full-time pastor,

Dallas Adler, the Lester Dankert

family moved from Saginaw to

Midland. ..... The family

immediately began regularly

attending services conducted by

Pastor Adler in the nearby Sugnet

Elementary School building.

Services were held in the

basement assembly room of the

school building, rented to the

Mission to use on an 'as is' and

'leave it as you found it' basis.

The Mission was grateful to have

the space available in a public

place, and the room was

adequate for seating those who

attended, but the overall

ambience of the

schoolroom was not

at all 'churchly.'

Many persons

suggested, 'We

ought to have an

altar.' Among them

were John Best and

Lester Dankert.

Lester undertook to

do something about

it. Despite not

having a workshop or any power

tools, he was not deterred: He

undertook to design and build a

structure that would be:

Instantly recognizable as a

Christian church altar; Easily

reduced in size to a smaller

package for storage; Constructed

from materials still available

under wartime restrictions,

Constructed using only simple

hand tools.

The contruction work was done

in the garage of Lester Dankert's

home on Concord Street, mostly

by Lester with occasional

assistance by his father, John

Dankert, using hand tools owned

by John. The latter was a

carpenter, still working at that

trade, who had a full set of hand

tools used in his trade, but he

had no power tools.

Lester designed and built the

portable altar from common fir

plywood and 1-inch clear pine

lumber. The altar consisted of

two major units: A base unit and

a tabletop unit." (Editorial note:

Detailed information on the

construction is available.)

"...The only ornamentation on the

portable altar was on the front

panel piece of the base unit. For

the central sub-panel, Lester

carved from clear pine his

rendition of the classic 'Cross and

Crown' motif. Cf. Revelation 2:10:

'...Be faithful unto death, and I

will give you the Crown of Life.'

For the side panels of the

triptych, Lester carved from clear

pine his renditions of the Greek

letters Alpha and Omega, Cf.

Revelation 1:8...'I am the Alpha

and the Omega, the Beginning

and the End,' says the Lord, 'who

is and who was and who is to

come, the Almighty.' "

Further details in the

memorandum from Lester

Dankert relate how the altar was

created to be stored in a case

when not in use. He states that

"The practice of using the

portable altar started in late

summer of 1942 and continued as

long as the congregation held its

worship services in the basement

assembly room of Sugnet

School...until Trinity Lutheran

Church moved into its own new

church building in 1947."

Sincere appreciation to Lester

Dankert for his contribution of

important historical details to the

archives and historical records of

Trinity Lutheran Church.

Just wondering about our hands in

worship.

I know, I know this sounds off the wall…and

perhaps it is but here goes.

This morning as I participated in worship I

noticed how hands play such a big part in

what goes on (I’ll relate why I noticed in a

bit.)

There were the hands of the greeters and

ushers offering the handshake of welcome.

There were the hands of the

musicians: trumpets, a

trombone, a keyboardist—all

using their

hands to make beautiful music.

There were the hands of the

woman sitting up front signing

the words of the service and its

songs.

There were the hands of the

pastor gesturing, tearing bread,

pouring wine, and blessing

children.

There were the hands of those

sitting near us offering a

handshake and the words, “May the peace of

the Lord be with you. And also with you.”

There were the hands of those seated to my

right and left as we joined our hands to pray

the Lord’s Prayer together.

There were the hands that passed the

offering plate to receive the tithes and gifts

for the work of mission and ministry.

Why did I begin to think about all of this hand

stuff? Because during the singing of a

communion hymn our nine year old

granddaughter sitting between her

grandmother and me,

reached unprovoked and took our hands into

hers just because. A grace moment for sure.

For all of the above reasons, hands have

always been important in the worship

experience. The Psalms exhort us to clap our

hands and raise them in praise.

Jesus used his hands to take up the towel of

servant hood; to touch the sick and raise the

dead; to pass the bread and cup of life to

sinful beggars; and, to willingly lay them on a

crude

cross to be pierced by the nails of bitterness,

hatred and greed. Bleeding hands for you.

Look at your hands. Notice the hands around

you in worship—just wondering whose you

could you grasp and thus create a grace

moment for yourself and another.

Pastor Kirk Havel, Ret., 2119 Middle Haven

Dr., Gladwin, MI 48624
