June 2013 Volume 13, Issue 6 A publication of the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau National Festival of Breads – the nation’s only amateur bread-baking competition – comes to Manhattan for the first time June 20-22. This fes- tival is hosted by the KS Wheat Commission. The public is invited to attend the events on June 22 at the Hilton Garden Inn and Manhattan Conference Center. A host of activities will be featured including baking demonstrations, a miniature trade show, educa- tional activities for children, free taste samples and more. The Flint Hills Discovery Center will also be on-site to hand out $1 off admission coupons. At the heart of the event is the live test-baking of each of the eight finalists’ recipes from contestants across the nation. Contestants, their home- towns and bread recipes include: Ethnic Breads Judi Berman-Yamada of Portland, Oregon: Red Apple-Golden Cheddar Challah Elke Roby of Lincoln, Nebraska: German Streusel Cranberry Bagels Rolls Gloria Piantek of West Lafayette, Indiana: Pennsylvania Dutch Pretzel Slider Buns Marilyn Blankschien of Clintonville, Wisconsin: Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls with a Twist Whole Grains Merry Graham of Newhall, California: Light and Fluffy Chia Whole Wheat Rolls Rita Lutz of Horseshoe Bay, Texas: Two Grain Cranberry and Walnut Bread Time Saving and Simple Jane Hinrichsen of Cottage Grove, Minnesota: Rich Italian Bread Rosemary Leicht of Bethel, Ohio: Onion Parmesan Cracker Bread Mardi Traskowsky of Herington will offer a demonstration of how to make her winning entry, Family Italian Bread as the first-ever participant in the “Youth” category. Contestants will participate in additional activities, includ- ing a Wheat Harvest Tour with a stop on a farm during wheat harvest, where atten- dees will ride in a combine. Contestants will also visit a working flour mill and a grain elevator, all of which are intended to help them gain a greater understanding of the wheat supply chain. A team of judges will evalu- ate the finalists’ recipes and finished product to deter- mine the grand prize winner of the 2013 contest; first place receives a cash prize of $2,500, plus a year’s supply of Fleischmann’s Yeast and an expense-paid trip to the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center in Norwich, Vermont. Title sponsors of the National Festival of Breads include the Kansas Wheat Commission, King Arthur Flour and Fleischmann’s Yeast. Spring is travel writer time in The Little Apple®!

Manhattan was host to 15 travelwriters in May. Thirteen represent-ed the Outdoor Writers ofKansas, OWK, and were hosted bythe Manhattan Convention andVisitors Bureau and the Flint HillsDiscovery Center. After touringthe Discovery Center, the writerswere paired with local guides toenjoy turkey hunting and fishing.

The OWK’s also held their annualmeeting in Manhattan, and auctionfor thousands of dollars’ worth ofoutdoor equipment.

Stephen Keeling, co-author of“Rough Guide to the USA” cameon assignment to update theKansas and Oklahoma portions ofthe guide. This is a London-basedtravel guide series with an audi-ence of highly educated and well-traveled readers/users. Keeling toured the Flint Hills Discovery Center, downtown,Aggieville and KSU campus while in Manhattan.

Matt Bates also came to The Little Apple® and works with those who live in the UnitedKingdom and Ireland with an interest in traveling Kansas and Oklahoma. Bates also touredthe Discovery Center, downtown, Aggieville, KSU campus and Tuttle Creek State Parkwhile here. Bates took a whirlwind 18-day tour of Oklahoma and Kansas.

Travel writers take personal experience, networking, and local contacts from theseexperiences, then write and submit stories on Manhattan to various publications aroundthe world to encourage visitors to our area.

Big Adventuring

Take a Deep BreathThe Manhattan Marlins are hosting a swim meet at the City Pool June 15-16. The public isinvited to come and watch the events-- admission to watch the races is free! KathyWichmann, Meet Director, says they hope to have up to 10 teams and 200 swimmers participate in this year’s meet, including teams from Kansas City.

Races begin at 10 am each day and will wrap up by 2pm.Wichmann says, “I would encourage anyone to comewatch. It’s very exciting, and for kids that are possiblyinterested in competitive swimming, it’s a great opportuni-ty for them to watch people diving off the blocks and justexperience the excitement of the meet.”

Meet participants will get a free wristband to enjoy theCity Pool at the close of events.

Triathlon in TuttleThe date has been released for the I Heart ManhattanTriathlon—start training now for the August 18th race! The event is a 500 meter swim, 20 K bike and 5 K run.Registration available online at ozendurance.net/manhat-tan_triathlon.

This is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. USA Triathlon isthe National Governing Body for triathlon, founded in1982. More than 4,300 events are sanctioned by themevery year.

Kansas takes Chicago by storm complete with red shoesand providing visions of a “must-see” Kansas. Kansashosted a Media Dinner event at the Koval Distillery onTuesday, May 14 for travel writers to attend and learn ofthe treasures Kansas offers. The publisher and contribut-ing editor of MidWest Living Magazine and numerousother freelance writers, bloggers, and television producersrepresenting the Chicago area attended the event.

What started as a 40th birthday celebrationhas become a treasured tradition, bringing5,000 guests into an extraordinary experi-ence, blending a symphony concert withthe flint hills of Kansas.

The 8th annual concert will be held June 15on Fort Riley’s Historic Main Post. Theevent moves to a new location each yearthroughout the Flint Hills. While tickets forthe 2013 event are sold out, you can placeyour name on a waiting list at816.471.0400.

The newest exhibit from the Flint HillsDiscovery Center’s temporary exhibitsroom will run June 8- September 8.

“Conservation Quest” is loaded with inter-active, hands-on activities that impart energyconservation messages. Visitors will learnabout what energy is, where it comes from,how we use it and why it’s so important touse it wisely.
