Out Of The Hat W

elcome back to the start of term 3. Although it has been a fairly chilly start to the term, we

have really appreciated the rain which we desperately need. A special welcome to families who are new to the school, and to new staff members. In the Senior School we welcome Mrs Alana Leigh who is teaching Visual Arts and Mrs Jenny Mathews who is teaching Music; in the Junior School – Mrs Belinda Veenstra is the Grade 2 locum teacher and Mrs Maureen Gilmour is the Aftercare Supervisor.

W hile many of us were relaxing during the holi-day, there were a num-ber of girls and staff in-

volved in inter-provincial hockey, squash and debating, as well as swimming and equestrian. All the details follow in Hat Chat, and I would like to congratulate all the girls on their performances. Special con-gratulations must go to Jodie Conolly who was selected for the South Afri-can U16A team to play in a quadran-gular series; and was also named player of the Series. Eight girls, accompanied by Mrs Bennett and Mrs Humphrey, had a very successful tour to Bor-neo during the holiday as part of the World Challenge. Although they found parts of the experience quite tough going, they embraced the opportunity and different culture.

C ongratulations to our catering manager, Paula Heuff, who has been

selected as one of seven regional finalists in the Chef of the Year competition. This is a national competition and includes chefs from hotels, restaurants and cater-ing companies. It has already been a busy start to the term. Over and above the nor-mal curriculum, Grade 9s have been to the Markets of Warwick; Grade 10 Sport Science girls to Prime Human Performance Insti-tute in Durban; Grade 8 and 9 isi-Zulu pupils to Shakaland; Grade 11s on their leadership camp for 2 nights and Grade 12 Geography girls on an excursion to Sani Pass. The Grade 10s have continued with their dance lessons in prepa-ration for their formal dance later in the term; the Grade 12 girls, in their various committees, have organised a Variety Show, and the Wind Ensemble is currently on tour in Johannesburg.

Grade 11 Leadership Camp

Thank you to the parents for partici-pating in the IQAA survey last term and focus groups last Saturday. It is important that, as a school, we get feedback so we know what we are doing right and can also identify areas that can be improved on. Have a good term. Sue Tasker - Lady Principal

DEBATING

Provincial Debating Championship at Glenwood

High School, Durban We had three girls participating in the Championship as members of the Pietermaritzburg Debating League. In the Junior section all three teams broke to the semi-final round. PMB 3 beat PMB 1 in that round debating the topic This house believes that CI Studios should reintroduce Spider-man as a gay person and advanced to the final round. In the final round PMB 3 lost to PMB 2. We are very proud of Asma Noorgat who was a member of the PMB 3 team.

Final Awards Evening Congratulations to Thashmia Vather who received a 3

Speaker award at the Pietermaritz-burg Debating League Final, hosted at The Wykeham Collegiate on Wednesday 27 July 2016.

GRADE 8 ENRICHMENT PROJECT

A group of staff put together an en-richment project for the Grade 8s towards the end of the second term. The brief was an out-of-classroom learning experience which would enrich the lives of the pupils. The theme of cultural heritage was cho-sen and the girls were able to experi-ence the Tatham Art Gallery; histori-cal walks about the city centre; The City Hall and Mr Harty playing the big pipe organ. Social media plat-forms such as Edmodo; apps such as QR Codes were used to guide the groups and to allow the groups to collect their information. The girls’ cell phones were an important part of the data gathering exercise. The pro-ject also involved research to pre-sent a collage of images reflecting the cultural history of Pietermaritz-burg, a parchment document on the history of a selected monument; building or aspect of the city and a movement piece showing the hustle and bustle of a city centre. A few selected artworks are shown below with the artists’ reflection.

Gabby Cuturi, Gaby Campbell and Claire Thomson.

We decided to do our collage in the shape of an elephant as it is very symbolic to the Pietermaritzburg ar-ea. The beautiful historic buildings really caught our eye. Pictures of the buildings are inside our elephant. As the city is spoilt by litter, we showed the elephant walking through the litter instead of grass. Katherine Elmer-English, Jess Behrens and Jadye Saayman.

Our collage is made of a wire sculp-ture of the Tatham Art Gallery which we felt was one of the buildings that inspired us the most and was our favourite. Pictures of our trip were paper clipped around the sculpture through a string wire structure. This connects everything together. Snabo Manqele, Tabitha Stewart and Gemma Daugherty.

We chose the elephant as it symbol-ises all the elephants we saw around the city. Also because the Zulu name for Pietermaritzburg means ‘Place of the Elephant’. The shadow repre-sents the city’s past and background. The consensus from the learners is they learnt a lot and thoroughly en-joyed the enrichment experience. Did you know? You will find at least 18 elephants if you walk around the block that the City Hall is in!

Grade 12 Geography trip to Sani Pass

The Geography pupils decided that they wanted to experience the pass before the tarring begins so we booked the trip with Sani Pass Tours. By Tuesday last week it be-came apparent that we could experi-ence snow! The pass from the old Good Hope Trading station to the top was transformed in to a magical win-ter wonderland. 18-year olds became young children as they frolicked in the snow; threw snowballs as pass-ers-by and built Walter, the snow-man. This trip showcased experien-tial learning at its best! Pam Esterhuysen

Welcome back to Term Three! Last term ended very positively with our Grade 6 and 7 play, “Adventures of Alice”. It was wonderful to see our girls confidently performing on stage and in the accompanying band. I am very grateful to our drama and music department who so competently write scripts and source music so that we are able to bring out the best in our girls. The term has certainly started with a bang and the girls have been kept very busy with outings, Dads and Daughters activities and even a pup-pet show!

Grades 6 & 7 Play “Adventures of Alice”

This delightful show was enjoyed by both The Wykeham Collegiate family and members of the community. It was vibrant and colourful and every girl in Grade 6 and 7 had a part to play.

Grade 3 outing to Dairy Day and

Mandela Capture Site Last week, our Grade 3 girls went on an outing to Dairy Day and the Nel-son Mandela Capture site. They were warmly welcomed at Dairy Day and had a wonderful time looking around the factory, and were spoilt with treats and enjoyed constructing

Junior School a 3D cow. We are grateful to the Mackenzie family for hosting us. Vis-iting the Mandela capture site and seeing the enormous monument was memorable and the girls had fun pic-nicking and playing at the site. The night before Friday, I was so excited to go to Dairy Day factory and the Nelson Mandela Capture site. We had to put our food in a backpack. All of the TWC girls in Grade three went on the bus. Dani and I sang the song, “Wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round”. First we went to Dairy Day. We had to wear a lab coat and ear plugs be-cause it was very loud in the factory. It smelt very cheezy. Next we went to the Nelson Mandela capture site. There was a sign that said “The Long Walk to Freedom” and then we saw Nelson Mandela’s face. It was magnificent. Then we went back to school. I am so grateful to be at this school. Keya Mudaliar On our outing we went to Dairy Day and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. First we went to Dairy Day where we saw a lady named Kim.

She showed us the whole of Dairy Day and it was huge. First we had to put on coats, hairnets and earplugs. We saw the room where they put the

lids on the milk and they put the yoghurt, cream, maas and milk into baskets. We waved at eve-ryone there and they were very happy. Then we made

a little cow whose name was Kylie MaMOOgue. Then we went to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. I saw the face very clearly and it was very clever. Then we had a picnic and played a game that we were travel-ling and guards had to check if we had anything. If we did we were sent to jail. It was GREAT fun! Grace Wayt

Getting ready to go into the factory – putting on hairnets and lab coats was exciting.

Grade 5 Dads and Daughters morning

Despite the cold and wet weather, our Grade 5s spent an enjoyable morning constructing rockets. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication with which they all worked. The dads appeared to get very technical whilst many daughters focussed on the colour and outer appearance of their rockets.

Grade 6 visit to Sunnyside Homes

We were reminded at assembly on Monday that we are privileged to have all that we have. It is important that we do not feel guilty about our privilege, but remember that we are fortunate to be able to assist and bless other people in a variety of ways. At the end of last term, our Grade 6 girls visited Sunnyside Homes. They took cakes with them and hosted a special tea where they sang to the residents and played a variety of mu-sical instruments. Each resident was given a gift pack which the girls put together. They really enjoyed inter-acting with the elderly and were touched by the experience.

Grade 7 Dads and Daughters

On Saturday our Grade 7s were in-volved in a fun activity with their dads. They worked in groups and each group was given 4 sheets of newspaper and asked to build the tallest construction possible. After many disputes, attempts, laughter and discussion, the winning construction was decided upon. The girls so enjoyed spending this quality time with their dads and the competi-tion amongst the dads was fierce!

The Rio Olympics Puppet Show

Our Foundation Phase girls were treated to an inter-active puppet show about the upcom-ing Olympic Games. They were enthralled and loved playing their part!

General Black Tie Music Event held at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall The Wykeham Collegiate Foundation organised a black tie music event to raise funds for three target areas within the school.

To provide access to excellent education for deserving girls from disad-vantaged backgrounds.

To provide bursaries for daughters and granddaughters of Old Girls who would otherwise not be able to attend TWC.

To develop outstanding facilities to provide the basis for the provision of world class education for girls at TWC.

The evening was a resounding success as the very talented TWC musi-cians from the different music departments; Senior and Junior Choir, Sen-ior and Junior Wind Ensembles, Senior Violin Group, solo performances by individual school girl musicians and to finish off two old girls, Ruby Gill and Kheti Ntshangase, entertained the 320 guests. Thank you to everyone who supported this very worthwhile event.

SPORT SCIENCE

The Grade 10 Sports Science girls visited Prime Human Performance Institute at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday last week. After a quick tour of the facility, the girls watched the Dolphins Cricket team training and going through rehabilitation. The girls then went into the altitude room. The room was set at an altitude of 3500m and the girls were put through their paces on spinning bicycles. They had to do some high intensity interval work to experience the effects that exercising at altitude has on the body; as this forms part of the Sports Sci-ence syllabus. Afterwards, they all quickly jumped into some ice baths to cool down their aching muscles. The girls also visited Marine Lifesaving Club to try out surf skiing. Three instructors helped set them up on the skis and then the girls tried to get beyond the breakers – some succeeded, others did not, but the girls thoroughly enjoyed trying out something new.
