Critique, con’t on pg.5

Rhea Jansen - Very nice. My favorite part is how you handled the vase, very sophisticated. As a viewer the sugges-tion is enough. By carving into the background you have made a sugges-tion. Motion is good, white areas work well, hard and soft edges.

Eleanor Macallister - Love the co-lours, warmth flowing through the background. If you changed the trees, because they are similar to the tulips in size, this would set up more distance.

Mohamed Hirji - I really like the way you have done this. You didn't put too many people in it. Colour is beautiful, warm into cool. I like this very much

Critique: October 11, 2018Notes submitted by Sharon Bongers; photos by Betty Dean

The critic for the October 11 meeting was Frances Alty-Arscott, introduced by Frances Hessels.

Frances Alty-Ascott is a well-known Alberta-based artist who resides in Edmonton. She received her BFA from the University of Alberta in 1980. Her vibrant work is in public and private collections throughout Canada and the United States.

Frances Alty-Arscott began as a pro-ficient watercolour painter and added the medium of acrylic on canvas to her repertoire in the early 2000s. Colour can be a powerful element of visual communication, and Frances was able to transfer her signature use of vibrant colour in her watercolours to her acrylic paintings.

Her work is inspired by the rolling countryside and the sparse woodlands of Alberta. She does not paint specific scenes so much as take the elements that she sees and attempt to portray her impressions on the paper or canvas. Having lived in the province her whole life, Alberta’s urban and rural land-scapes continue to be her inspiration for her own unique expressionistic style. The artwork of Frances Alty-Arscott is represented by Rowles & Company Ltd.

In addition to her painting, Frances lectures and teaches both adults and children in creative approaches to wa-tercolours and acrylics.

http://altyarscott.netJasmin Alstad - Very nice piece. Has a feeling of flowers. The composition wrapped around is more concentrated, really interesting. I like the texture and the drippings. Very nice touch of yellow.

Margaret Somkuti - Striking - love the line. I would use a burnt stick, you could use charcoal, this gives a nice warm feeling. Composition well done the curve in is nice.

Myrna Wilkinson - Beautiful, the tones set the painting. Brave putting in a bridge. I can't say anything to improve it. The distance really shows, I love the warmth through the whole composition.

Frances Hessels - Very nicely done. It is difficult with the head tilted. Well done with light passing. Edges are good, very important. There is a sense of light bouncing.

Critique, con’t on pg.6

Barbara Stachow - Wow - very nice, beautiful. I love the lace, very difficult. The designs on the eggs are well done.

Mona Innes - Beautiful - the reds, yel-lows, greens yummy, changes of marks. Red is hard to bring in another value, you created depth by underplaying co-lour and mark making.

Keith - Very nice. The city is well handled. You captured night time. The shapes are well done, I like the hint of lights.

Sora Han - I like the introduction of green against red and dripping. I would have it pulled off to the side. The line created is beautiful. I think you could do some really neat things.

Sharon Bongers - Really neat, created the feeling of a jawline. A spot of colour would add to it. The eye is good. Very nice piece.

David Nash - Very nice, this is hard to do. I like the sky a lot. The shapes are organic. The combination of colour, break of line, very nice. Line changes creating depth and warmth. Do more.

Karin McFarlane - That background shape very nice, composition strong. Diagonal going across composition very rich.

Many thanks to the Alberta Foundation

for the Arts for their support of the Edmonton Art Club!

Gail Farewell - Small paintings are intimate, this is very beautiful. Narrow strips and a quiet area gives us nice drama, great darks.

Seraya Smit - Very interesting rocks. The color is rich. I would like to see the waterfall splash outside the rocks. This is a very complicated subject matter. Some ink sprayed in with a toothbrush gives the feel of splashing. You could have some trees overlap the mountains.

Maureen Woolley - There is a softness of your work. The complementary col-ors set off the composition, I like the way you have handled the shapes going into the river valley. Great.

Critique, con’t from pg.6

Critique, con’t on pg.7

Johanne Septou - This painting has depth. The sunlight through the trees, lovely. I would move her off to one side, introducing some branches would add more distance and depth. You could add more detail in the foreground.

Betty Dean - (cropped) The combina-tion of hard and soft edges is going to make it appear 3D and link the two areas together. Really well done.

Jan Fraser - This is really neat, this needs to be seen up close. This is absolutely gorgeous. There is so much happening. I would love to see this big. The process is gorgeous.

Donna Chamberland - It has earthy tones. I love the pastel pink, and marks going this way and that. Well done, and the building connects very well. Nice movement created. More light on rooftop.

Kerralee Nelson - This has a lot of appeal. Black gives power, feels like water / reflection. You could have a line showing a shoreline from the water, not a solid line, a broken line to bridge one area from another.

Page 7: Juried Show Opening Night Crowd W - media.virbcdn.commedia.virbcdn.com/files/ec/d2e4bd4c1f33e607-EAC...Colour can be a powerful element of visual communication, and Frances was able

Andrew Beddingfield - Looking at it in terms of the painted edge, the blue makes it jump off the canvas. I enjoy the background more than the shapes. I would like to see more of the scraping. The right side is working better than the left. Paint and quality well done.

Connie Clark - Very nice, striking. I like the detail, because of the size you want to get up close. I like the light in the background, dark in the mid section. This creates a softening that allows the viewer to enter in. The introduction of red / orange sets off the green, you get a sense of the eye being led through the composition.

Linda Nelson - Turned out very well, the combination of colors makes for a great composition, good shapes, differing sizes, good. Introduce some line in and out. Use a sharpened stick, it will creat a fluid line with lost and found edges.

Richard St Amant - I like this a lot, he looks great. You could add more colour. Very nice piece.Heather Schaaf - I like it against the

dark background. I would like the edges to be more important, more interesting.

‘Loving Vincent’Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted film. Over 65,000 frames on over 1,000 canvases were painted, with the film shot with actors, and literally painted over frame by frame. It took 4 years to develop the technique, and over 2 years with a team of over 100 painters working at studios in the Polish cities of Gdansk and Wroclaw, and a studio in Athens to complete the film. Produc-ers believe that Vincent’s story cannot really be told without his paintings, so his paintings were brought to life.

The Edmonton Art Club is sponsoring a screening, which will be scheduled in the fall of 2018 in the Orange Hub Theatre. Once a date has been set, all those who have expressed an interest will be notified.

If you are interesed in attending go to edmontonartclub.com/contact or email [email protected].

The Edmonton art Club is pleased to have become a member organization of the Alberta Community Art Clubs Association (ACACA), joining 21

other Alberta art clubs in promoting the arts.

The ACACAaims to unite, serve and network with artists throughout the province. Their goals are to foster and maintain instruction in art and to develop an interest in the knowledge of art and culture in the communities throughout the province.

Created in 1968 under the direction of Professor Harry Wohlfarth from the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta, ACACA holds Charitable Sta-tus, and all donations over $10 dollars receive a tax receipt. Financial support for the ACACA and sponsored projects is provided through membership fees, donations and grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Alberta Com-munity Development, and the Visual Arts Alberta Association.

ACACA fills a unique niche in promoting the arts in the province of Alberta by sponsoring three juried art shows annually, hosted by art clubs from different communities each year.• the southern zone show – south of

Highway 9• the central zone show – between

Highways 16 and 9• the northern zone show – north of

Highway 16The works of art are critiqued at the conclusion of each show, providing en-couragement and learning experiences, in an environment that encourages new ideas, networking, and goodwill.

Paintings are then juried again at the Alberta Wide Show. The Alberta Wide

Show location may change every year, dependant on what buildings are avail-able. Awards are presented annually for each Zone show and the Alberta Wide Show. Winners from the Alberta Wide Show are hung in a smaller gallery as the Alberta Spirit show. ACACA owns a permanent collection of award winning works, which are purchased from the artist every year.

Artists must be individual members of the ACACA to participate in shows.

The Annual Meeting of the ACACA is held in conjunction with the closing of the Alberta Wide Show. Elected Of-ficers shall serve a two year term. There is province-wide representation on the Executive and board of directors.

Artist Opportunity: Arts Datathon

On the weekend of November 23, 24, and 25 Data For Good Edmonton, Edmonton Com-munity Foundation (ECF), the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC), and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) are hosting a Datathon. The

Datathon is a joint event focused on developing a better under-standing of challenges and opportunities in our communities through the use of data.

During the Datathon partner organizations will provide da-tasets from across the arts sector in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada, including granting data from municipal, provincial and federal funders and other existing research. Volunteers with technical expertise and interest in data analytics will examine the data, exploring larger questions about what this information can tell us about our communities.

We are inviting artists in the greater Edmonton area to sub-mit expressions of interest to participate in the event and create work in any art form during the event, inspired by the interactions with the Datathon volunteers and their findings as they are developed. As part of this opportunity, artists are invited to present their work at the presentation of findings on November 25.

If interested, please contact [email protected] for information on applying. 1 to 4 artists may be selected, and there may be opportunities for collaboration between selected artists. Artist’s remuneration will be up to $840 ($536 each for a full day and $304 each for a half day); a further amount of up to $200 is available to reimburse for supplies for the artist. All creations will remain the property of the artist.

Paint Spot has art classes for all levels from beginner to advanced. Workshops and art classes are held at ARTELIER located at 10007 80 Ave (just one block south). There is plenty of free parking. We have experienced instructors who are generous with their time and knowledge. Beginners are especially welcome.

Most materials are provided and a 20% discount is offered to all participants. Register soon to avoid disappointment. Taking a class with a friend is great way to spend the day making art together.

When you register online (www.paintspot.ca/workshop/art-classes/ ) or by phone, you will receive a confirmation email within 3 days. If you do not hear from us, do not hesitate to call.

This month, the Edmonton Art Club juried in 4 new members: Andrew Bedingfield, Sora Han, Mona Innes and Karen Mc-Farlane. All new members will have their own feature page on our web site, including their biography and images of their work. Updates to their page can be done at any time, and if they need help with any part of the process, Seraya Smit, our web master, provides it.

Our web site is an important part of EAC outreach - in fact some of our new members made their first inquiry through the web site. Seraya responds to every inquiry, then forwards it on to which ever member can address it. When the inquiry is about membership, it is forwarded to Jan and Joyce, who follow up and encourage applications.

One of the most important factors in a strong website is attracting new viewers. During the month of September, we can already see visitors to our new member pages. The clarity of the site, new and interesting material and the accuracy of infor-mation all help to bring users back.

We all need to help keep our website interesting by submitting new work and revising our bios as needed.

Thanks to Seraya for being such a great web master!
