Just MoveTM School Highlights Special Events • Many schools have incorporated Just Move into school-wide events such as Family Fitness Nights
Additional Programming • Schools have also integrated Just Move into their after-school and before-school programming
Student Success • Teacher feedback and site visits suggest that students are more relaxed and focused during lessons after exercising with Just MoveTM
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge: What exactly is Just MoveTM? Feedback: Just MoveTM is a classroom-based activity program that utilizes a set of activity cards that have been mapped to the common core. That’s it!
Challenge: What does the grant cover? Feedback: We suggested that schools use the grant money to print sets of cards for all teachers, to purchase class incentive prizes, and to host a Just MoveTM kickoff celebration. Going forward, the only cost will be printing cards for new teachers.
Challenge: Another program?! How will we fit this into our schedule? Feedback: Most schools implemented the program with ease. Schools used a variety of methods to train teachers: live training, video group training, and emailing program information to teachers. Schools also integrated Just MoveTM into orientation celebrations and other school-wide events. Some schools had trouble implementing this year, but it’s never too late to start! We suggest setting up an implementation plan now so you are prepared to start the program in the fall.

10 Steps to a Healthy School Community
Step 1: Continue Just MoveTM
in the classroom
• Print card sets for new teachers and train new teachers
• Integrate Just MoveTM
training and refreshers during teacher orientation/planning period before school begins
• Continue to hold class competitions to provide incentives for teachers to use the classroom based activity cards
• Hang cards in the hallway or on bulletin boards to increase and sustain interest and build community
Step 2: Integrate Just MoveTM
outside of the classroom
• Host a school-wide kickoff party in the Fall
• Demonstrate Just MoveTM
exercises at new student orientation (i.e. Kindergarten)
• Train afterschool program facilitators
• Use the cards during extracurricular activities or academic programs like Math Facts
• Host a Just MoveTM
station at events (i.e. Family Fun Night)
Step 3: Establish a School Wellness Council (or utilize your existing council to the max)
• A School Wellness Council (SWC) organizes and promotes wellness activities in the school community
• Teachers, staff, parents, students, and administrators are all invited to join the wellness council
• The SWC is a great way to ensure the sustainability of the Just Move
TM program
• Alliance for a Healthier Generation has a great school wellness council toolkit: https://schools.healthiergeneration.org/_asset/wwj4dq/SchoolWellnessCouncilToolkit.pdf
Step 4: Introduce nutrition education into the curriculum
• Classroom Connections K-8

• Cooking Classes
• Nutrition Education
• Fitness Classes
• Gardening Programs

GrowNYC local food demo (kale salad) at Family Fun Night
Step 6: Adopt a Healthy Snack Policy
• Teach your students about “Everyday foods” versus “Sometimes foods” and enforce healthy snacking during the school day
Step 7: Apply for grants to supplement your programming
• Your wellness council can apply for grants (or a representative from your school who is willing to implement the grant can apply on their own)
• Grants for gardening, physical activity, nutrition education, healthy breakfast
• Excellent resource with updated grant calendar: http://www.healthinschools.org/news-room/grant-alerts.aspx
Step 8: Invite community professionals to host workshops at your school
• Connect with local universities, hospitals, and fitness centers to bring professionals to your school (i.e. Parent Breakfast Series, Career Day)
• Tap into the knowledge of your existing community (parents, teachers, students)
• Get creative! Invite farm educators, restaurant chefs, med students
Step 9: Celebrate your success!
• Get creative and take it one step at a time i.e. Try monthly themes like Jumping Jacks January, September Steps (take the stairs!), New Foods November (taste something new this month!)
• Write op-eds (local papers, school or PTA newspaper); get students involved
• Share stories and photos on social media (facebook, twitter, instagram) – tweet @chalk_nyc
Step 10: Become a CHALK School for continued support and a national community
• Access and distribute CHALK’s monthly Healthy Habit newsletters for parents and staff
• Utilize CHALK’s Healthy Habit morning announcement scripts
• Be the first to know about future local or national grant opportunities related to CHALK/Just Move
