JANUARY 12 - 18, 2016, STUDIO 5 - ALTA VISTA PLAZA REDESIGN
70
REVISED GROUND PLAN 500
ORIGINAL GROUND PLAN 1:500
A week-long urbanism study of a local suburban strip-mall complex, this project re-imag-ines and revitalizes a at, one-storey, vehicle-oriented street corner lot at the intersection of Dorion Avenue and Alta Vista Drive into a more welcoming, pedestrian- friendly space. Transformed from its current single-use commercial programming into a multi-use con-glomeration of retail, social gathering, and residential components, the proposed rede-sign adds height and streetfront presence to the site and its surrounding suburban, resi-dential community.
Specic and mandatory to the new plaza was the placement and design of a corner-unit Bridgehead coee shop to replace the existing Tim Horton’s franchise on site. Three areas and clientele were to be considered: walk-in’s, short-term diners and socializers, and day-time “perchers” there to work independently. According to the franchise owner’s request and business model, the shop was not to include a drive-thru.
DECEMBER 2015, STUDIO 4KANATA LAKES KINDERGARTENThis kindergarten sits in a suburban site to the West of Ottawa surrounded by large big-box stores, a car dealer-ship, and, further away, singe-family homes. Inspired by Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum and the institutional architecture of Herman Hertzberger, Kanata Lakes Kinder-garten uses a concrete structure and a series of vaulted ceilings to accentuate the different heights between com-munal and pedagogical spaces. The vaults bathe the interi-or spaces with evenly dispersed natural light, and set up a steady rhythm throughout the building. A sunken perfor-mance / gathering space is given a showcased priority at the front of the building, reflected both inside and out through the grand room and the protected schoolyard.
NOVEMBER 2015 - CCA CHARRETTE “ARCHIPELAGO”Inter-university 4-day long competition run by the Canadian Center for Architecture, teams of four students were tasked with reimagining Montreal’s Sainte Helene and Notre Dame islands 50 years in the future, and subsequently 100 years after Expo67.
DECEMBER 2015 - INSTALLATION“CATENARY BALLOONS”1000 Clear Helium Balloons, Ribbon
Emulating Calatrava’s spatial manifestation of the catenary arch under the direction of Prof. Manuel Baez, an 18” x 18” grid was suspended over an area of 5m x 20m at a height of 3 sto-ries, creating an undulating, exible plane of delicate levitation and playful translucency. The installation was on display in the Architec-ture Building at Carleton University for 8 days, lling the triple-height space in the building’s ‘main street’ atrium.
APRIL 2014, INDEPENDENT WORKChess Board & Pieces, 17” x 17”Walnut and Poplar
Made with two classmates as an end-of-semester gift for our Studio professor, Adriana Ross.
