K-2

There are many ways we can be positive. We can be positive with our words and

with our actions.

Simple ways to be positive are things like giving a high five or a thumbs up or saying

good job.

K-2

Let’s play a game to practice being positive.

Let’s pretend it is the first week of school and there are some new students in our class. Let’s see how many things we can think of that would be examples of being positive.

For this game, the magic number is 15. Let’s work together (can be in pairs, small group or whole class) to think of 15 different ways we can be positive towards our old friends and our new friends during class.

K-2

First, let’s count to 15 together. Can anyone count to 15 by 5s?Can anyone count to 15 in another language?

Now, I will put a star on the board for each one you think of.How many more do we need to reach 15?After 8…How many more do we need to reach 15?

Akellz has some challenge questions for you!

What if you did 7 positive acts at school, 5 positive acts at home, and 4 positive acts with your friends? How many positive acts did you do?

If Akellz challenges you to do 13 positive acts this week and you do 7 positive acts today, how many more positive acts will you need to do the rest of the week to reach 13?

What are some ways you can think of to be a positive example for other people?

Let’s create a class list and see how many positive acts we can come up with!

3-5

There are 4 people in Akellz’s family. Each person does 3 positive acts at home before school or work today and 2 positive acts during the school/work day. How many positive acts do the people in Akellz’s family do today?

Can you write and equation for this problem?

Hint: Do the problem in two parts…first figure out the number of positive acts at home, then at school, and finally add them together.

3-5

If 7 of Akellz’s friends do 56 positive acts and each friend does the same number of positive acts, how many positive acts does each of Akellz’s friends do?

If the friends didn’t have to all do the same number of positive acts, what are some other ways that 7 friends could do 56 positive acts? Use what you know about multiplication and division to find your answers.

Hint: Demonstrate a factor tree [56 = 7 x 2 x 2 x 2] as a good strategy to find answers.

What are some acts a doctor, nurse, counselor or other health care professional does to be positive?

What are some positive acts you have said to or done for others?

Create a class list!

Please solve the following problems to figure out how much being positive can matter!

*When nurses or doctors smile at their patients when they greet them, the patients have a much better experience at the doctor’s office.

Let’s say Dr. Akellz sees 10 patients today and greets 8 of them with a smile. What percentage of patients started their doctor visit with some positivity?

*The school nurse is also the coach of the basketball team. He does an experiment to show the team how being positive can help their game. At first, the team sits silently while Akellz practices free throws. Akellz makes 6 out of 16 free throws. What is his free throw percentage?

Now, the coach asks the team to cheer and clap for Akellz and he makes 10 out of 16 free throws. What is his free throw percentage now?

By what percent has his free throw percentage increased because of the positive encouragement he received?

Akellz has some bonus questions for you!

During the first month of school, 35 students went to see the school nurse to have their eyes checked. There are 140 students at the school. What percentage of students got their eyes checked during the first month of school?

The best doctor in town can see 3x +1 patients per day where x represents the number of hours the doctor spends at the office that day. Solve this equation for the following scenarios:The doctor spends 3 hours at the office. The doctor spends 5 hours at the office. The doctor spends 9 hours at the office.
