In this environmental report, we introduce Keihin’s Fundamental Environmental Stance,

Environmental Goals for the Future, and Environmental Conservation Activities Promoted

in Various Segments, as well as details of Keihin’s approaches to the environment, from

planning to achievements.

We are releasing this report as part of our year-round environmental activities in the

hope that you will assess our efforts. In addition, we hope to use this report as a

communication tool to further enhance our environmental activities.

Toward the realization of a sustainable society

A message from our President

Aiming for global environmental management

To alleviate the environmental load and create a

sustainable society, we have carried out unified global

environment management and consistently thought and

acted on what is best for the planet, the environment,

society and communities.

For forward-looking environmental maintenance,

we have set ourselves the target of a 25% cut in CO2

emissions by fiscal 2020, taking fiscal 2000 as the starting

point.

We will also work in all segments to halve our CO2

emissions, landfill waste, and water consumption by fiscal

2050 and to minimize them thereafter. Part of this will be

a shift in our attitude from “energy we use” to “energy we

create”.

Environmental Initiatives that set our course of action for environmental conservation

Until now, we have strived to develop environmental

load-reducing products and cut CO2 emissions and

waste in our production bases. We have stated our

ideas on environmental conservation in the form of the

Environmental Initiatives and set a course of action for

individual employees to act with an awareness of their

leading role.

Based on the Environmental Initiatives, all Keihin

employees will work hard to undertake activities that will

contribute to the reduction of environmental loads and the

establishment of a recycling-oriented society on a global

scale.

Keihin recognizes that environmental conservation by corporations is strongly linked to maintaining a healthy global environment. As a responsible member of society, Keihin will actively endeavor to reduce the environmental load through all areas of our corporate activities in order to protect the global environment.

The year 2015 was one in which the world took important historical strides towards environmental conservation. We watched the effects of climate change intensify as the international community recognized that addressing environmental problems had become a pressing need, with numerous countries promising to jointly tackle climate change in agreements signed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris last December.

Here at Keihin, we also consider eco-friendly initiatives to be one of our most important missions as we work to build a more sustainable society and conserve the world’s abundant natural beauty for generations to come—and we are pleased to report that we made significant progress towards becoming an even more environmentally friendly company in 2015.

In Motorcycle and General-Purpose Products, we have installed its compact motorcycle electronic fuel injector systems (FI systems), which include an electronic control unit with a newly developed ACG starter control system, on the Honda Vario eSP launched in Indonesia. We are also putting our compact motorcycle FI systems products on the Kawasaki Z125 and other models sold throughout Asia. As the motorcycle market has grown in developing countries, we have eagerly worked to expand the use of our FI systems across the globe to deliver advanced environmental performance.

In Automobile Products, we have has succeeded in developing an innovative new power control unit for hybrid vehicles with one of the highest output density ratings in the industry, further supporting the push towards minimizing environmental impact with vehicles that are increasingly electric. The unit was installed in the Honda Odyssey Hybrid. In addition, we have a high-pressure hydrogen supply valve and numerous other products installed on the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, a fuel cell vehicle poised to become the future of next-generation mobility. The supply valve uses natural gas control technology and is the first product of its kind in the world to meet UN technical standards. Meanwhile, in its ongoing efforts to boost the efficiency of internal combustion engines to reduce fuel consumption, the Automobile Products has developed system components for the growing number of vehicles installed with downsized direct-injection turbo engines. These components were installed included on the Honda STEPWGN sold in Japan as well as Honda Civic models sold in the US and Thailand. These are just a few examples of the eco-friendly products we have developed to achieve cutting-edge environmental performance.

We are also working company-wide to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions in all our business activities by reducing our global energy consumption, reducing waste, and more. At the same time, we are teaming up with our suppliers, in an ongoing effort to set up low-carbon supply chains and engaging in several other initiatives to enhance our corporate social responsibility activities on a global scale. In doing so, we hope to share our joys and successes with our stakeholders, business partners, customers, and society as a whole.

We are happy to report that as a result of having secured the trust and goodwill of our customers and communities through these and other efforts, Keihin has become the proud recipient of an unprecedented number of accolades. Honda Motor Company recently presented us with five Supplier Excellence Appreciation Awards, including the Environmental Award. Additionally, we received the Chairman’s Award of Energy Conservation Center of Japan (ECCJ) in Energy Conservation Grand Prize.

Keihin celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year. As a global company operating in 14 countries and regions around the world, with a combined workforce more than 20,000 people strong, we are committed to our corporate principle “We shall contribute to the future of mankind by the continuous creation of new value”. We intend to do this by contributing to the earth and society through eco-friendly technologies and products that help build a more sustainable society while conserving the world’s abundant natural beauty for generations to come.

Keihin has established Environmental Initiatives that set the course of our environmental conservation.To thoroughly implement these initiatives, Keihin has also formed a committee that carries out environmental load reducing activities.The following describes Keihin’s system for working on environmental conservation activities and the roles within this system.

Keihin’s system and vision for environmental conservation are

described below.

In order to accurately monitor domestic and overseas trends and

implement industry top level environmental management on the

basis of the environmental management system, Keihin has reviewed

its system since fiscal 2014 and further reinforced its environmental

management by setting up a Global Environment Committee.

This Global Environment Committee is made up of four regional

subcommittees, the Japan Environment Subcommittee, Americas

Environment Subcommittee, Asia Environment Subcommittee, and

China Environment Subcommittee. They recognize that disclosing

their activities and results is the correct attitude to take, and they

will, as standard, disclose their results to society.

●GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Subcommittee

This subcommittee assesses the actual situation with raw materials, energy consumption, chemical substances, waste, etc., as they relate to manufacture and development, thereby reducing substances of concern, including CO2 emissions.

●Environmental Accounting Subcommittee

This subcommittee works to win the confidence of society by calculating and clarifying the environmental costs required for environmental conservation and improvements and by disclosing environmental information to society.

●Environmental ISO Subcommittee

In addition to community contribution activities, this subcommittee is also engaged in activities to reduce the environmental load in manufacturing processes in order to improve, maintain, continue, and upgrade the environmental management system.

●Product Environment Subcommittee

In response to the changing environmental needs of the world, this subcommittee promotes the development of environmentally friendly products and works to reduce the environmental load through resource and energy saving.

Global Environment Committee In order to win the confidence of society, the Global Environment Committee manages and promotes environmental activities to try and reduce the global environmental load, and discloses information to society through environmental reports etc.

Environmental management

Regional Acquisition of Environmental Management Certification and Environmental Audits

For the purpose of reducing the environmental load, Keihin encourages its bases to acquire certification of the international standard ISO 14001. So that the PDCA cycle of the environmental management system runs well, an action plan is formulated based on the annual goals set by the top management, environmental activities carried out, and their operation and management checked via environmental audits.Note that in Japan, we are planning to transition to ISO 14001:2015 in October of this year.

The Keihin FIE Pvt. Ltd. No. 2 Plant was newly certified in March 2016, bringing the total number of certified Keihin production bases to 33

worldwide. Several additional overseas production bases are aiming to become certified in FY2017 as well.

An environmental audit is conducted by an external examination

body annually. In this external audit, minor nonconformities

and cases to be put under observation have been pointed out,

but all have been fully corrected. Internal audits are also carried

out in a similar manner.

Internal auditors improve their audit skills by regularly

attending an annual seminar.

Environmental Policy

Basic PolicyAs a responsible member of society, we recognize the importance of actively striving to protect the global environment in the development and production of critical automotive components through a commitment to producing eco-friendly products. Every one of our employees is carrying out activities that contribute to reducing environmental impact and building recycling-oriented societies across the globe in line with the Environmental Declaration that we have set forth to guide our environmental conservation efforts. We are dedicated to making ongoing improvements in our environmental management systems in line with this environmental policy as a means of continually taking our environmental performance to the next level.

Action Guidelines1. We follow all national and local laws as well as any additional requirements in setting voluntary management

targets in an effort to continually strengthen environmental conservation.

2. We carefully consider the environmental impact of our business activities, taking special care to address the following critical environmental management issues.1) Taking measures to prevent fires, leaks, or other incidents involving dangerous or hazardous substances

that could adversely impact the environment.2) Taking steps to conserve energy to stop global warming.3) Taking the 3R approach (reduce, reuse, recycle) to industrial waste.4) Cutting back on our resource usage and managing operations to ensure sustainability.5) Striving to develop and provide safe, green products designed with environmental friendliness in mind.

3. We actively support and cooperate with environmental conservation efforts to protect biodiversity, ecosystems, and the like.

4. We provide environmental education to ensure that every Keihin employee is fully versed in our environmental policy.

5. We formulate goals, action plans, and targets to ensure the successful implementation of our environmental policy, reviewing and/or altering our course as needed.

6. We maintain close and open communication with the public by releasing information on our environmental activities whenever appropriate.

■ Observance of laws and regulations

As a system for compliance, each executive officer responsible serves as a compliance officer and regularly checks whether laws and regulations are strictly observed.With regard to risks, each executive officer responsible for the promotion of action against risks serves as a risk management officer to prevent

environmental risks.

■ Dealing with emergencies

At Keihin, each base and department formulates a procedure or system for preventing and reducing contamination, which is intended to minimize the environmental load, in addition to observing the emissions standards required by laws and regulations so that we can properly prevent and deal with accidents. We regularly conduct emergency response drills for possible accidents with environmental equipment in preparation for emergencies. In the case of an accident that adversely affects the area outside of a plant or a situation that deviates from a regulatory value, we follow the Emergency Response Flowchart to minimize its effects on the environment.

■ Environmental risk measures in risk management

◆Status of global measures・Keihin has identified 48 risk items, including environmental threats, that could significantly

impact our business activities. In an ongoing effort to prevent risks in advance or stop their escalation, we manage risks generated by external and internal factors; identify risk items each fiscal year using a multifaceted assessment of severity, urgency, and potential for escalation; combine, revise, abolish, or designate new risk items based on how risk situations actually manifest; and have our risk management officers hold quarterly reviews.

◆Future plans developed together with environment・We are unfurling plans in Japan and overseas aimed at the reduction of environmental risk

(environmental pollution, waste, waste water, air and water quality, qualified personnel) and greater awareness and spread of overall risk management. We are also currently strengthening our disaster countermeasures, including environmental ones, through the “genba, genbutsu, genjitsu” [actual site, actual articles, reality] principle.

◆Future expansion and key areas of focus• Keihin has established a set of Emergency Control Regulations*1, which are enforced globally. By standardizing our guidelines for risk management, we can help ensure that all group companies are achieving the same level of risk control.

• In order to further strengthen our mechanisms for preventing risk occurrence as early as possible, we have outlined a clear process that extends from risk analysis to problem identification, expanded our manuals and set up more effective training programs, and added specific promotional methods and best practices to our training texts. With these and similar initiatives, we are continually refining our HRD programs in an effort to give our employees a keen sensitivity for risk prediction and prevention.

■ Products for the latest FCV (fuel cell vehicle) models

Keihin developed numerous components to perform critical functions in fuel cell vehicles in FY2015, among them hydrogen fuel control system

components that make use of natural gas control technology and electronic control system components that adopt essential technologies for

producing vehicles that are increasingly electric.

We are also making drive trains more efficient and reducing drive energy to extend single-charge cruising range by approximately 30% over

conventional systems. These Keihin components help power the world’s top zero-emissions vehicles to around a 750-kilometer range.

■ Products for hybrid vehicles

Keihin considers the development of environmental technologies to be an important theme and is committed to the technologically advancing

products for hybrid vehicles. Among those we have successfully developed so far are electronic control components that regulate the motor and

battery by receiving signals from the engine control unit.

In FY2015, we developed a compact, highly efficient power control unit to power the motor and regulate electric energy recovery, and Honda used

the component in their Odyssey Hybrid.

■ Establishment of Green Purchasing GuidelinesTo achieve globally environmentally friendly manufacturing and provide safe, clean products to our customers, Keihin established its Green Purchasing Guidelines in 2010. We continue to implement the guidelines and share them with suppliers. In the procurement process for parts, etc., Keihin controls substances of concern and preferentially purchases parts, etc. compliant with the standards defined in the guidelines. In this way, we contribute to the manufacture of environmentally friendly products.

■ Product approach to the environmentIn connection with the chemical substances contained in our products, we perform advance investigations into the substances contained in all products purchased from suppliers.The Keihin Chemical Substance Management Standard has been updated to the 11th edition, and environmentally harmful substances are strictly controlled based on our rigorous criteria.

■ Environmental management at suppliersAmid rising awareness of environmental conservation due to climate change, Keihin is promoting environmental management in concert with suppliers. For suppliers who have not yet acquired official certification, we have established and are promoting a Keihin ISO 14001 alternative certification system. *The Keihin ISO 14001 alternative certification system involves introducing dedicated environmental manuals as an ISO 14001-compliant Keihin version EMS. We promote its adoption by suppliers unable to acquire EMS certification from an official organization. Goals are set in the environmental program and monitoring is performed to grasp a monthly progress. From fiscal 2013, we began to promote suppliers’ self-auditing and Keihin evaluates the obtained results. We will continue our alternative certification system using this method.

■ Biodiversity survey resultsWe have been conducting a biodiversity survey since 2014 in which we ask our suppliers to complete a questionnaire. We ramped up our environmental activities in 2015 and will conduct the survey again in 2016 with the aim of further improving our approach to biodiversity.

We held this presentation event again in April 2015, inviting 133

participants from 81 component and air conditioning suppliers plus

118 participants from 76 electronics suppliers to have them speak

about their environmental initiatives and to introduce best practices

In the Purchasing Segment, we strived to reduce environmental loads based on the standards defined in the Green Purchasing Guidelines. In fiscal 2015, we will further reduce environmental loads based on the Global CO2 Management System which was introduced to establish a low carbon supply chain.

■ Internal disposal of water-soluble waste oil

Since the 2011 earthquake, have increased internal disposal by building a complex system that incorporates biotreatment.

We reduced the amount of cutting oil we generated in FY2015, and were able to dispose of almost all of it within the company.

We were recognized for these efforts as well, receiving the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI) Chairman’s Award

as part of the FY2015 Awards for Resources Recirculation Technologies and Systems.

We set a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 1% over FY2008

levels each year using a basic unit index (CO2 emissions per sales

volume). In FY2015, we achieved a reduction of 27% over FY2008

Keihin is aiming for higher efficiency through a modal shift toward marine transportation and the global sharing of packing styles by product.We are promoting the reduction of shipping and packing materials, such as by simplifying packaging,reviewing the materials used, changing specifications, and increasing the use of returnable containers.

■ Hillside planting at Sennen-Kibo-no-Oka

Keihin participated in a tree-planting festival at Sennen-Kibo-no-Oka

(the Millennium Hope Hills) in the city of Iwanuma, Miyagi.

The trees, which included evergreen oak, Japanese bay, and

Japanese cherry, will serve as a lifesaving coastal levee.

■ Beach cleaning activities to support reconstruction

Together with the Miyagi Honda-kai and with support from Honda

Motor Co., Ltd., we carried out a beach cleaning activity to restore

Omotehama beach in Shichigahama, Miyagi, hit by the Tohoku

earthquake, to its former beauty and leave a sandy beach that people

can walk along barefoot for generations to come.

■ Satoyama conservation activities in Marumori

We worked together with local nonprofit organizations to plant

80 trees, including Yoshino and Japanese cherry, near Marumori

Station in Miyagi to help restore a ravaged satoyama area.

■ Support activities for reconstruction

We have been carrying out weeding and cleaning at the venue of the

Watari Reconstruction Marathon held in Watari, Miyagi.

■ Local forest improvement activities

Following up on last year’s activities, we planted 100 trees in several

varieties (including Japanese cherry, sawtooth oak, and Japanese

beech on prefectural lands located in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi.

■ Activities to support local communities

We plant trees and cut weeds together with residents of the Sakura

area in Kakuda, Miyagi.

■ Kinu River cleanup activities

Keihin employees eagerly carry out environmental activities to

protect this beautiful river in Takanezawamachi, Tochigi.

■ Kakuda Abukuma Eco Forum

The Kakuda Abukuma Eco Forum is made up of four companies in

Kakuda, who propose a program of action and exchange information

at a meeting each year. Among their main efforts to reduce their

environmental load are energy conservation activities, waste reduction

initiatives, case reports, and communication and information sharing.

■ Traffic mirror cleaning activities

Together with local companies, Keihin cleaned the traffic mirrors

located along roads to neighborhood elementary schools again

this year in the hopes of keeping children even safer on the way to

school.

■ Satoyama conservation activities

We planted trees at the site of a large-scale forest fire that occurred

near our production base in Miyagi, and continue to carry out

weeding activities there to protect seedlings.

This year, we trimmed and additional 0.62 hectares of land.

■ Providing environmental lessons at schools

Keihin communicates the importance of the environment to pupils at

elementary schools in Kakuda and Marumori, Miyagi. In fiscal 2015, we

taught 146 pupils at 5 schools about the importance of the environment.

■ Environmental communication

To publicize our environmental activities, we introduced Keihin’s

energy saving, waste recycling, and climate change prevention

measures via easy-to-follow panels at an environmental forum held

in Kakuda, Miyagi.

We are carrying out a variety of activities,such as cleanup activities and recovery support activities,

Keihin aims to reduce its global environmental load at its non-manufacturing bases as well as its manufacturing bases,through initiatives such as energy saving, waste reduction, water resource conservation, and so on. We also carry out structural evaluations with a basic unit*1 in our efforts to build a low carbon society. In future, we will pursue further controls through the integrated management of our overseas environmental load and the expansion of our accumulated reduction technologies.

In the manufacturing segment, Keihin is taking global initiatives such as energy saving, waste reduction, etc. in the pursuit of a recycling-oriented society. In fiscal 2014, we managed the CO2 emissions of subsidiaries in Japan and overseas by a global management system.

Third-party comments on the Keihin Environmental Report 2016

Recent years saw large segments of society taking an increasing interest in how corporations conduct themselves, with a particular focus on the environment, social contribution, and corporate governance. Keihin celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year, and the company has been an environmental leader for decades, consistently taking bold, eco-friendly measures while making steady progress towards becoming a sustainable company through a variety of social contribution efforts. In addition to developing innovative, cutting-edge, ecologically-minded products, Keihin is currently making a powerful push to expand its environmental activities through projects both in Japan and, increasingly, on a global scale as well. The environmental report itself is easy to read and appropriately discloses details on relevant topics. My core assessments are given below along with suggestions for the future.

◆With an eye to its increasingly global business activities, Keihin has set a target to halve its across-the-board environmental impact by 2050. By 2020, it aims to slash CO2 emissions by 25%, and its 2015 output in Japan is already down 36% from 2008 levels. The target for intrinsic reduction in terms of the basic unit (CO2 emissions per sales amount) is one percentage point every year, yet in the seven years between 2008 and 2015 the company has already brought this indicator down 27% rather than the target 7%, putting them greatly ahead of schedule. At the same time, Keihin recognizes the criticality of rising CO2 emissions resulting from its rapidly expanding global operations, and has responded by making the reduction of its environmental impact a top priority at every one of its overseas production bases. In this way, the company is advancing its environmental activities both at home and abroad. It is now heading for a major turning point with the commitment to reduce the basic unit for global environmental impact by 1% a year starting in 2014.

◆Keihin is also planning to set up a low-carbon supply chain while strengthening its supply chain operations. The company is currently in the process of rolling out joint activities with suppliers while supporting efforts that create a united front towards reducing CO2 throughout the global supply chain in line with the Keihin Purchasing Guidelines and the company’s CO2 Management System. Among the initiatives producing solid improvements in the transport sector are Keihin’s efforts to further boost the efficiency of product shipments and make packaging materials returnable.

◆Keihin’s consistent results always puts them at the top of the Corporate Environmental Management Survey conducted by the Nikkei Shimbun, and this year was no exception. The nineteenth survey looked at of 1,737 major listed and unlisted corporations, out of which Keihin ranked fifth in the separate manufacturing industry category and sixteenth place overall.

◆Keihin already has an established reputation for its superior business risk management as well. Last year, it received an A ranking from an authoritative third-party assessment organization for its overall risk management strength. The company has strengthened its unified management structure, which includes a diverse array of both global and region-specific risks facing overall operations, the environment, and much more, based on its unique set of Emergency Control Regulations . In the process, it is managing progress on initiatives to eliminate regional and temporal inconsistencies across all of its production bases.

◆Looking at Keihin’s international business activities and the emission of CO2, which has the greatest impact on the global environment, overseas operations produce upwards of five times domestic emissions—more than double that if the company’s entire supply chain is taken into account. Going forward, I would hope to see Keihin take its green management to the next level. It can do this by shifting from its current global CO2 management system, which considers reduction measures and follows implementation progress using performance and data values summarized from individual production bases under an operational framework, to a system that allows it to calculate CO2 emissions estimates at the speed of business and reliably hit its reduction targets using dynamic, practically effective scenarios that incorporate insights and creative solutions from individual production bases at the right time as well as expertise gained from its domestic achievements when appropriate.

◆Keihin presents clear and straightforward green accounting practices. In addition to publishing current physical units in line with Ministry of Environment guidelines, I would like the company to additionally consider posting examples of profit increases or cost reductions stemming from its proactive environmental initiatives.

◆Keihin compiles and publishes the required environmental information in this slim booklet while enhancing and supplementing its content with detailed statistics and other data on the conditions surrounding its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on its website. Both are effective communication tools for stakeholders that enhance the company’s image. If possible, however, I would also like Keihin to consider releasing on its website information about all of its many social contribution efforts and related activities throughout the world as another aspect of its commitment to CSR.

Average temperatures in July of this year were the highest ever recorded. In late August, a powerful typhoon lashed the Tohoku region, tragically bringing with it massive destruction. It was the first typhoon ever recorded as directly striking the area. There is no doubt that climate change is generating some irregular phenomena. At an expert government conference on global warming measures last year, there was talk of setting a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (see note) by 80% by 2050 as part of an effort to free Japan from its reliance on fossil fuels and kick off a de-carbonizing revolution. As a leading eco-friendly company, I expect that we will see Keihin continue in its uncompromising commitment to creating a sustainable, recycling-oriented society with bold initiatives that increasingly take the spotlight in various parts of the world as it continues making rapid progress towards its environmental goals.
