Proverbs 3:5-6 Adventure Bible for Early Readers (p. 744)

Know God’s Word

Trust in God and lead him lead you.

Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (25 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

This is the last weekend of our summer movie series. Ask kids how they liked it. And specifically, ask them if they learned anything. Tell a staff member how it went for them (and for you).

As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents about a time they plan to trust God this week.

This week, we’re learning Proverbs 3:5-6, which reminds us to trust in God with all our hearts. We’ll be talking about how and when we can trust God!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear. TRUST YOUR TEAM

• Put kids into small teams (but one volunteer can lead) OR small groups with separate leaders

• Choose one kid from each team/group to wear a blindfold and hold a beanbag • Place the two bins in a location that is accessible to all teams • Teams must help their blindfolded member get to the bin. They can tell them

where to walk and where to throw the beanbag, but they cannot lead them physically.

• Play as many rounds as time allows, giving as many kids as possible a chance to be the blindfolded person.

• When you have about 5 minutes left before Large Group, stop and ask kids about the best and worst parts of their week.

If you have extra time, remind them of your expectations for their behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand the meaning of Proverbs 3:5-6 and (2) identify times they want to trust God this week. Why? Trusting God can be hard. But learning when and how to trust can help us remember to do it in the moment. Tip: Some of your supplies are for the “extra time” activity. But if you don’t have time for it, that’s OK.

REVIEW 1. What does it mean to trust? 2. Who do you guys trust? 3. What does it mean to trust in God? 4. Why does God want us to trust him? 5. When is it hard to trust God? When is it easy? (Try to use some feeling words like

when you’re sad, scared, happy, etc.) REMEMBER THE VERSE

• Look up Proverbs 3:5-6 in the Bible (p. 744) and show kids where it is. Then read it to them.

• Repeat it as a group with your hands extended, palms up.

APPLICATION ACTIVITY • Give kids a rock • Tell kids they can put it in their pocket, backpack, or somewhere safe. Whenever

they feel worried, sad, angry or anything else, they can rub the rock and remember to trust that God is with them, leading them.

• Practice this by brainstorming things that we can trust God with, like: taking care of me, taking care of my family, helping me make right choices, listening to my prayers, loving me, etc. After each suggestion, rub the rock.

*Pray with the kids, telling God you’ll trust him this week. Extra Time? Give kids an index card and have them draw one thing they want to trust God with. Then, they can place it in the special box (one per room, so small groups will share). Tell kids that they have given this to God and no longer have to worry about it! It’s now in

Today, we’re focusing on one motion to represent trust and listening to a song to get the verse in our heads.

*Play the intro music. Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. It’s great to see you here. That game looked like so much fun. Raise your hand if you were able to get a beanbag into one of the bins (let kids respond). Wow, how did you do that without being able to see where it was?! (Let kids say their friends helped.) Yes, your friends helped you! WHAT IS TRUST? And you had to trust that your friends were telling you the truth. (Sit down in the chair.) Just like we have to trust that a chair will hold us if we sit in it. Does anybody know what it means to trust? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, it means to believe in something, like this chair, or someone, like your friends in the game. (Stand up and set the chair aside.) Sometimes, we trust people to help us or take care of us without even realizing it. Close your eyes and think of one person you really trust. (As kids eyes are closed, give them hints.) Maybe you trust your babysitter to take care of you… or you trust that your teacher will give you a place to sit in the classroom… or you trust that your friend wants to play with you! When you think of one person you trust, open your eyes! (Pause. Then ask 2-3 kids to share.) WE CAN TRUST GOD And you know who ELSE we should trust, according to God’s word, the Bible? (Let kids guess.) One of the places the Bible tells us who to trust is in Proverbs 3:5-6. This is what is says: SLIDE: Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. So who does the Bible tell us to trust? (Let kids say: The Lord.) That’s right, the Lord! That means God and Jesus. And what will happen if we trust Him? (Let kids say: He will make your

paths smooth and straight.) That’s right! Just like you trusted your friends and they told you the path to getting the beanbag in the bin, we can trust God and he will show us how to live and act. We’re not wearing blindfolds, but do we always know what God has coming next…like tomorrow or the day after tomorrow or the day after that? (Let kids respond.) Sometimes yes, but we don’t know everything that will happen! And that can be scary. Sometimes we have a bad day and we feel mad or sad. But we can always trust and believe in God, even when we don’t know what is coming next. TRUST CAN BE HARD Do you guys ever think it’s hard to trust God? (Let kids respond.) It can be sometimes! Let’s think about it together. Everybody, stand up! (Let kids stand.) I’m going to give you a few situations. If it’s easy, I want you to hop once, like this. If it’s hard, stay standing and make a big “X” with you’re your body (feet planted wide apart and arms spread high in the air). And some of these things might be hard for some people and easy for others. That’s OK! Here we go:

• Your mom asks you to do a chore you hate. You trust that God wants you to obey your parents, so you do it.

• You are praying to God in a quiet place. You trust that God hears you. • While you are praying, you get an idea in your head of something nice to do for a friend.

You trust that God gave you that idea—and you do it! • You have a really bad day where people are mean to you, and you are crying and angry.

You decide to trust that God is everywhere, so he is with you even in the hard times. • You hear a noise at night and feel scared. You tell God about it and trust that he can

keep you safe. Great job! Now go ahead and have a seat. (Let kids sit.) TRUST IS ALWAYS WORTH IT Trusting can be REALLY hard sometimes, can’t it? Especially if things aren’t going our way. Hey, remember our friends Mike and Sully from Monsters University? They wanted so badly to be scary. But things weren’t going their way! In fact, they got kicked out of scare school. But they kept trusting that one day they would be scary, so they kept on going. Let’s take a look and see what happened to them. As you watch, see if they eventually got to be scary. Video: MU End Montage Did you guys see that?! Even when it felt like nothing was going right and they were kicked out of scare school, Mike and Sully kept doing their very best and working hard, and in the end, did they get to be scarers? (Let kids say: Yes!) Yes, they sure did. And when we follow God, even if things go wrong for a long, long time and we don’t understand why we feel scared or mad or unhappy, we can trust in God. And we can know that He will show us what to say and do and how to live our life.

REMEMBER THE VERSE Let’s learn the verse together to remember! Take a look at it again: SLIDE: Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Let’s say it out loud together. Repeat after me (break it into smaller, repeatable phrases, as appropriate for your group). Great job! Now let’s say the whole thing at once…are you ready?? (Repeat the whole thing.) One great way we can show God we trust him is by praying with our hands open and our palms up, like this (model). We’re showing God with our body that we’re letting go and not holding onto (make fists) anything! Hey, and you know what else can help us remember the verse? …Fun songs! Let’s watch this music video to help us learn this verse. The words are a little bit different, but they mean the same thing. Just sit and watch and enjoy. As we watch, hold your hands open and ask God how you can trust him. And if you think you’re starting to get it in your head, sing out loud! Video: Proverbs 3:5-6 That verse is going to be in my head all week! Good thing too, because next time I have a problem or feel lonely or scared, I want to think about this verse and remember to trust in God and let him show me how to act. When we trust in God with your whole hearts, we can feel brave and confident because trusting means we give up fear and know God will lead us to the best path possible. WORSHIP Now let’s sing about trusting God. Our first song reminds us to be brave. Our second song reminds us that we can always call God’s name and ask him to help us. Song: Bravery Song: You Come in A Hurry PRAY Ask somebody to come thank God that we can trust him.
