PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As the school year starts, so do our activities that define our club. Past administrations have welcomed new projects for consideration and I, too, welcome the thought of a new venture in serving. August found us helping with the Heart Walk and assisting DH Lions Club at the Kapahulu Bon Dance. We had two “miles” for speakers, Myles Nakasone, who spoke about the relentless relief effort he’s doing in Japan after the

tsunami, and Miles Matsumura, HLF Trustee, filled us in about the upcoming HLF Walk for Vision & Hearing taking place on Sunday, September 30th. Thanks to our Tail Twister, Lion Dennis, for affording us laughter with his amusing antics to kick off our meetings. At least we know a few facts about each other, and who can’t tell jokes! Thanks, also, to IPP Tom, Convention Chair, for his enthusiasm and the individuals and businesses who contribute to the Convention Committee Fund. Just shake that bag up a little more! There are considerable activities coming up as we approach September:

A joint meeting with our zone clubs will bring us together at our first meeting, 6 pm, at Niu Valley MS with a speaker on Emergency Medical Services. We’ll have dinner beforehand and CIS are invited, but by looking

at the signup sheet, not many have signed up. With so much happening around us, it can be important and invaluable for all to know what to do in an emergency situation, and at the same time, break bread with our zone club members. CIS cost is $5. Please sign up by Sept. 3rd.

Vision Screening starts up at the preschools. The purpose of the Vision Screening Program is to identify school age children with vision problems that may affect their ability to learn in school. We used to do 7 preschools, but only 5 are scheduled in September, and in October, we will start vision screening at the 3 elementary schools in our district. September 2012 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Page 2 continue to support our efforts. We never know how many Lions will participate, but do not depend on the others, or else no one will show up. Your assistance can always be used, whether it be for testing, signing in, escorting or recording results. Many hands finish the task faster. I would even like to do vision screening at one school outside our area where no testing is done, so that maybe we can make a difference. Taking Joy in Service doesn’t have to only be during the Seven Days of Service (SOS).

District Governor Jack

Kampfer makes a visit to our club at our 2nd meeting, so make it a point to attend to hear his message.

As mentioned, the HLF

Walk happens on Sun, Sept. 30, at Magic Island, so garner up walkers and donations to raise money in the walk for Vision and Hearing!

Oahu Heart Walk August 11, 2012 Story submitted by C.F Leu

The Hawaii Kai Lions again volunteered to help staff the food tent. Lions Jeanne Alices,

Dennis Ching, Cynthia Chun, Tommy Chun, Alvin Hayashibara, Alex Ho, Stanley Ito, Keith Katsuda, C.F. Leu, Bill Modglin, Ken Nishibun, Toshi Nishioka, Clara Ozaki, Sindy Sindiong, Potential Lion Richard Shiinoke, and CIS Sally Ito, Florence Nishioka and Aki Leu participated.

The event was held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Kapiolani Park. Tables were set up and an assembly line formed to place Subway sandwich, fruit and chips into packages. But wait--no packages. No problem--plan 2 activated. As the walkers passed the finish line, the volunteers dropped the prepared food into their Heart Walk goodie bags and also passed out ice-cold water and pogs.

An enthusiastic Farrington High School group also helped.

New Member Spotlight:

Mike Chisick By Mike Chisick & Peggy Oyama

Mike Chisick was born in New Jersey. Growing up, he was very active in sports (football, baseball, and skiing) and was 1st team all New York State linebacker in high school. He attended Union College (NY), earning a B.A. in Asian Studies and Japanese (magna cum laude, phi beta kappa). He also attended The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a MBA in Finance.

In 1998, Mike started his own business in Kyushu, Japan. During that time, he also moonlighted as a fake priest,

performing weddings. He married 24 couples. It's one of those odd jobs he had while living there. Ask Mike about it the next time you see him!

Mike lived and worked 13 years in Japan, spending the last 7 years working in investment banking in Tokyo.

Mike and his wife, Kumi, have been married 11 years, and they have two boys: Tyler (7) and Ray (5).

Mike enjoys spending time with family, outdoor activities, volunteer coaching flag football, travel and poker.

Mike has travelled to Vietnam, China, Korea, Australia, Thailand, Italy, Hong Kong and Singapore. His favorite foods are sushi and buffalo wings, but not at the same time! Asahi Super Dry is Mike’s favorite beer.

Appreciation Dinner

Friday, August 3, 2012 Story submitted by Alvin Hayashibara

September 2012 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Page 3 using corn and beans. Patty Osaki made desserts, which was also donated.

Our menu was Steak grilled and cut to bite size, Chicken-Squash & Shiitake dish, vegetable greens, the bean and corn salad, sausage and brown rice donated by Tom Jones. Tom also donated the salad dressing and brought poke. Dave brought two types of sausages to grill and some tako dried to perfection that went well with the beer. Wine was also served for whoever wanted to drink. Tom & Alvin brought the wine. Rick Yee, who won the Bud door prize the night before, donated the beer.

Thank you all who helped make our breakfast project a success again this year. Hopefully we will be able to do this at my home next year.

All help was greatly appreciated!

Furoshiki Class for CISes Taught by Evelyn

Nakamura Submitted by Peggy Oyama

On Saturday, July 28th, a group of Hawaii Kai CISes, a few Lions from Hawaii Kai, Ala Moana and Kamehameha Lions

Clubs, and a couple guests attended a Furoshiki (alternative gift wrapping) class led by Evelyn Nakamura.

The event was held on the second floor of the Gyotaku Restaurant on King Street, thanks to our gracious host, Tom Jones. The ladies learned how to use 3 different sizes of square fabric (furoshiki) to wrap a variety of gifts in different sizes and shapes. The wrapper would become part of the gift and could be reused again later. Each participant enjoyed the benefit of the wrapping lesson, a bento from Gyotaku, and went home with their very own furoshiki! Many thanks to Renee Iha, Lyn Yee (CIS contact), Tom Jones, and the instructor, Evelyn Nakamura, for a very successful and enjoyable event!

The below excerpts appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune. They were taken from real court records.

Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, in most cases he just passes quietly away and doesn't know anything about it until the next morning? Q: Do you know how far pregnant you are now? A: I'll be three months on March 12th. Q: Apparently then, the date of conception was around January 12th? A: Yes. Q: What were you doing at that time? A Texas attorney, realizing he was on the verge of unleashing a stupid question, interrupted himself and said, "Your Honor, I'd like to strike the next question."
