How the school works? (1/2)

• Two separate periods:

▫ The capacity of the classrooms are not enough to take the number of students.

▫ Hence, the school operates on two separate periods of time, theprimary classes extend from 7 : am to 11:45 am.

▫ The preparatory school extends from 12:00 am to 4:00 pm.▫ Every class lasts for only 35 minutes.

▫ Primary classes have one teacher that gives all of the subjects.

• Sources of income of the school:

▫ School fees; they tell the students that they are book fees, yet books arefor free. There exists no firm system to collect the fees, some studentspay, others don’t. Some students pay in installments.

▫ Financial support from the ministry of education; 4000 LE (at the beginning of the year)+ 3000 LE (at the end of the year).

▫ Supplementary classes at the school

Preparatory: 10 LE/ student/ month

▫ Private lessons

SWOT analysis

Strengths

Opportunities

 Weaknesses

Threats

•  Willingness of teachers andadministration to cooperate

• Students (that we’ve met) don’tentirely hate school

•  A large area of land that can be

used as a playground• Some of the teachers took CLE

training

•  Afaq el hayah’s willingness to helpfinancially and technically

• Existence of teachers, if money  was allocated to hire them.

• Relatively small village (easier tohandle)

• Teachers hit the students• No greenery/sports field within the school’s

campus• The number of students outnumber the

classrooms’ capacity • Two separate periods for prep and primary • Short classes (35 min)• Insufficient number of teachers• Fee collection is very undisciplined which

leaves the school with less income.• No supervision over the collection/spending of

money • High level of illiteracy among kids• Extracurricular activities are not encouraged

at the school, leaving students unhappy andnot motivated to learn.

• Rigid culture ( early marriage, unimportance of education)

• Poverty (makes working more attractive than learning)• Limited options (illegalities) on increasing the number of

classrooms• Underpaid teachers• Free education system at public schools• The teachers and principle regard as “Zy el 7okooma”

Summer School▫ Summer school taking place at Kafr hemied by the end of May

and will last till the 20th of September.

▫ The objective of the program is to enhance the reading and writing abilities of the students.

▫ They need our help in:

Adding the fun element (e.g. Soccer tournament, music, art, etc)

Financial support (salaries for teachers and incentives for thestudents)

Earn & Learn:• Students sense the poverty and decide that it’s better to work rather than go

to school, because:▫ They believe that whether they work or not, they’d end up like those who

didn’t go to school▫ They don’t benefit that much at school.

• Earn and learn (a project running in India) provides students with a sourceof income (has to be higher than what they’re currently earning) on thecondition that they go to school.

• The program adjusts itself to the life of the student and their exam timesand the time they need to study and excel at school.

•  We need to find a supplier willing to base his workshop at Kafr Hemied andfind the market to sell the students’ hand made products. (carpets, khanElkhalili crafts)

• This Job would offer the students:▫ Better work conditions than the bricks factory,▫ Better Payment,

▫ Skills they’d use in the future.

Teachers’ Task Force • Form a “Task Force” of experienced teachers from

different schools and different specializations,• This task force will be like an advisory body

responsible for:▫ Conducting regular workshops with the Teachers of Kafr

Hemied on different topics (e.g. Class management,Student behavior, Hitting the students)

▫ Providing Kafr Hemied teachers with tools they can use,

▫ Providing afaq el hayah with consultancy andrecommendations on how to best use our presence at KafrHemied school.
