Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise Narrative Description 2013-2014 Public Image
Given our small size, we are thrilled with the amount of media attention we have been able to generate so far this Rotary year. We have exceeded our own expectations! Thanks to Marcos, everyone now understands that “Membership is Every Member’s Business.” Our goal was to create the same awareness with regard to our Rotary Public Image. This has been accomplished by making Media Connection a mandatory part of every club endeavor. Each board member, every committee member, every member, has been encouraged to think about now to spread the word about Rotary in general and Kona Sunrise in particular. Because we are a highly collaborative club, our perceived issue to address was separating our identify from our other West Hawaii Rotary Club colleages. So, every fundraiser, every service project, every meeting speaker, our field trips to local businesses, the award of scholarships, our awards given to community business owners through vocational service program—literally everything became subject matter for media outreach.
Here are some examples of notable public image achievements: 1. Every meeting speaker has been described in advance of our meeting in West Hawaii Today. This
has led to interested community members coming to meetings and learning more about our club and about Rotary.
2. Our Ramping up Rotary project series has been extremely well covered with front page, above the fold, pictures and story about the good that Kona Sunrise is doing for its neighbors who have disabilities. All three projects have been well covered in the print media. In addition, the last two projects were the subject of what became a 30 minute feature story that ran throughout the month of March on Na Leo O Hawaii Public TV. This platform presented a special opportunity to bring the good that Rotary accomplishes in the community to a larger audience.
3. The 2nd Annual Menehune Food Drive and Annual Christmas Parade were exceptional
opportunities for us to use media to share more about Rotary. There was pre-event coverage in the form of TV and Radio PSAs featuring local radio personality Kahikina Ching, complimentary

newspaper announcements, coverage of the event itself on Na Leo O Hawaii Public TV, and those are just the highlights!
4. On the “smaller” side of Public Image, our President has made the wearing of our Rotary Pin a
presidential initiative. Drawing awareness to the “Power of the Pin,” President Vicki has substantially increased the wearing of pins beyond the Rotary meeting.

We continue to strive to improve our public image out to the community we serve. This year we had a late start with our club newsletter, but it is up and running now. We have worked very hard to continue with our club bulletin on club-‐runner and using social media on our club website and facebook. We have been keeping our members updated and our community updated on featured community service projects, activities and club fundraisers. We continued, as last year, to promote the fight against Polio eradication and have raised needed funds to support this worthy cause.
Facebook is the one way to get your social media message to many lines of business and to friends who are connected onto your other friend’s pages. On club runner we have updated many club activities, guest speakers and projects on the website with stories and pictures to showcase what we do in our community.
We have used our club shirts on service projects such as feeding the homeless, parades, and all community fundraisers to help promote Rotary. One of our Friends donated a new 8’x3’ banner that we intend to use at all of our community service projects.

Limit your response to ONE 8½” x11” page. (No letterhead, pictures, or graphics and print in Times New Roman, 12pt size). A narrative follows: _X__ Yes ___ No Submission Deadline: 1 April 2014 Public Image (I2) Narrative for RCPS: The Club has been quite successful in obtaining newspaper coverage of many of our projects this year. Our Committee Chair has gotten more newspaper coverage this year for Club activities and projects than ever before. List articles or summarize record: We have had articles or photo articles published 6 times this year. In years past we were met with poor response from the Herald Tribune, however this year saw a dramatic improvement. Still, the HRYF $5000 student scholarship article we drafted for the newspaper has not been published? Articles published include students of the month, college scholarship winner, bus shelter erection, and Mauna Kea workday. All articles have accompanying photographs. Three new members have been recruited through first accessing information on the Club website this year. The website has been updated regularly each month. And interclub communication has increased using social media. Facebook is used actively by members and “friends”. Updates average 2 articles a week. Several of our members have attended District PR seminars and this has improved our use of social media. And our media/website club member has continued to improve his skills with social media and specifically Club Runner. In fact we believe was the first Rotary Club in Hawaii to begin using Club Runner. The Club’s public image efforts are enhanced by having our Club members regularly wear Rotary Work Shirts, Rotary District dress shirts, and promote our club with a tent and two vinyl banners for parades, picnics, our weekly meeting place, and outdoor events (such as 2 parades and the Volcano Rainforest Run and four Highway Cleanups per year). The second Club built Bus Shelter erected this year has a Rotary Wheel displayed for all to see.
