Dance Groups In preparation for the Hunter Dance Festival early in Term 3, both the Junior and Senior Dance Groups will be performing at next weeks’ Monday afternoon whole school assembly, on Monday 19th June. Parents are invited to come along as part of the audience to enjoy their performances as we use the dress rehearsal to wriggle out any nerves and entertain the whole school with their dances. Dancers are reminded to bring all costume items along on the day if not before.

Lockdown Drill All staff, students and onsite visitors recently participated in an Emergency Lockdown Drill. These drills are mandatory each semester and ensure that we are prepared in the event of an emergency. Students and staff are to be commended for the sensible manner in which they practiced this important process.

Staff Professional Learning On Monday 19

th June Kahibah PS staff will complete the second of four of their rescheduled Term Four School

Development Day sessions; Choice Theory with guest presenter and previous Kahibah PS Principal Mrs Pam Richardson. The session will be held in the school library from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and parents are carers are warmly invited to come along as the school revisits the underlying principles of Choice Theory and how that translates into the school setting.

KidsMatter - Autism Spectrum Disorders Autism spectrum disorders are disorders that influence the way the brain develops and works. Many aspects of children’s development are affected, causing difficulties with communication, social relatedness and unusual behaviours. The most common of the autism spectrum disorders are Autism (also known as Autistic Disorder), High Functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. The idea that there is a spectrum of autism disorders highlights that children may have symptoms that range from being very severe with impacts in most areas of their lives, to more moderate symptoms that are less limiting. Children with moderate symptoms of autism spectrum disorders are usually diagnosed with High Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. It is important to recognise that while the patterns of symptoms for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders are similar, no one child will have the same pattern of strengths and needs as another. Autism varies in severity and children may have very different levels of difficulty. Difficulties with communication and social interaction are often the first things other people notice. Helping strategies need to be carefully matched to the individual child and to the needs, goals and strengths of each family. Consistency of approach is crucial for helping children with autism spectrum disorders, so coordinating strategies at home and school is very important. Team work and planning that includes parents, teachers, the school psychologist, speech pathologist and other health professionals will help in achieving the best strategy for each individual student. If of relevance or interest to your family and to further support social and emotional wellbeing; please refer to the KidsMatter information sheet that I have included in this newsletter, Autism: Suggestions for families.

When to Start School Starting school is a big step. How do you know if your child is ready? This video features Kindergarten teachers discussing this sometimes tricky issue. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/is-my-child-ready-to-start-school

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2018 Thank you to all the families who have already contacted the school to notify us of their interest in having their child begin Kindergarten with us in 2018. Families will be receiving a letter shortly informing them of a time to meet with me to discuss their application. If you’re still yet to apply, please do, so we can include your child in our preparations for next year.

Year Five Train-On Debating On Monday 5

th June our Year Five team of Dakota M, Lucy P, Lydia M, Rosie N and Mackenzie M travelled to

Charlestown Public School for a debate. This series of debating gives the students only one hour to prepare their arguments and is very demanding. They were the affirmative on the topic: That extra-curricular activities should be banned at school. They were successful in proving the argument. The students are to be congratulated on a fine effort as their strong arguments won the debate for them. A huge thank you to Jodie Martin and Tanya Moore who assisted with transport.
