Kährs is one of the oldest makers of wood floors. it is also one of the most innovative. Examples of stained floors

raiNforEStS arE thrEatENEDrainforests around the world are seriously threatened by large-scale felling, some of which is illegal. there are great difficulties involved in trying to guarantee the origin of the wood and to know whether or not it has been legally felled.

wE rEPlacE ProDuctSwe have stopped importing and marketing tropical wood products – until there are processes and documentation that offer guarantees that the rainforest timber is derived from controlled sources. to replace these, we have a range of stained floors that will create the same type of effect as a tropical wood floor.

wE SuPPort SuStaiNaBlE forEStrYcountries in the tropical zone must be given the opportunity to carry out sustainable forestry for their tropical wood species in order to develop their countries and economies. we will therefore reassess our decision when, and if, full guarantees of origin can be presented. we will also continue to pursue this issue in cooperation with forestry and environmental organisations.

woodloc® 5S – the new super joint for faster installation and a stronger floorKährs was the first wood floor manufacturer to introduce a mechanical glueless joint system. in 1999 we launched the ingenious woodloc® system, which revolutionised the wood flooring market. the woodloc® joint system meant that the boards for the first time could be locked together mechanically, without using glue. in addition to producing a perfect, flat floor without gaps, it also made laying quick and simple. thanks to the glueless installation, the boards can also be lifted at a later date and installed elsewhere. the perfect, tight fit is important for the durability of the floor. Not to mention the fact that a perfect fit without gaps also means no dirt and grime between the boards.

we are now introducing the next level of the woodloc® joint system – woodloc® 5s. these new joints make installation even faster and more flexible, while producing a stronger floor.

faStEr, StroNgEr, flEXiBlEFaster – the short end of the boards are connected vertically, instead of at an angle, which makes installation faster.

Stronger – woodloc® is already the strongest mechanical joint system on the market – and woodloc® 5s is even stronger; by approximately 25 percent. woodloc® 5s therefore enables installing a floor on a larger surface than previously without mouldings.

Flexible – Kährs with woodloc® 5s is just as easy to install as a glued-down floor or a floating one.

wood is a natural material and as such is affected by changes in humidity over the year. this places great stress on the joints. the woodloc® joint has proved superior to traditional joints when it comes to withstanding this type of stress.

woodfloor and interiorinterior design is all about feel. it is the combination of material, colour and furniture/accessories that will create the atmosphere. the choice of flooring plays an important role in the character of the room. this is where most interior design projects start. from the ground – going upwards.

thE floor iS thE fouNDatioNa floor is so much more than just something to walk on. the floor is essential for deciding the feel and look of a room. when designing your home, you should begin by considering the floor. the floor is the base, you can always repaint walls and ceilings, while the floor is of a more permanent nature. it is also something you use daily. the appearance of the floor, i.e. the colour, surface, texture, pattern and hardness, varies a great deal between different wood species - from light, calm Maple, through Beech and oak, to dark and vibrant walnut or Jarrah. find out as much as you possibly can about different species, their characteristics (page 93) and what they can do for you in your home. Your floor sets the mood.

Big rooMS – Big PlaNKSif you have big rooms, a 1- or 2-strip floor is usually most suitable. this usually gives the surfaces an airier and more open feel. You can also use the grading (city, town or country) to influence the feel of the room, to create either a calm or vibrant feel in the room. floors also interact with the room’s overall shape, how much light there is, the material on the walls and ceilings and their appearance. the furniture style you choose for the room can also influence the basic feel that you create. Big rooms – big patterns is our basic advice.

light or DarK floor?Natural light, the size of the windows, other lighting and orientation are some of the factors to consider when choosing a floor colour. a dark floor ‘swallows’ a lot of light, and also affects the feeling of space. at the same time, a dark floor can create a warm and comfortable feel in large rooms. a light rug on a dark floor unites the room with its light-coloured walls. a light wood floor reflects the light and increases the feeling of space within the room, and can create a dramatic contrast to dark design details. Polished and shiny floors reflect sunlight and redistribute it more than matt lacquered or natural-oiled floors.


thE DirEctioN of thE floor affEctS thE rooMthe direction in which the floor is installed has a strong influence on the feeling that is created. in most cases floors tend to be installed lengthways, but the shape and dimensions of the room can have a bearing on this simple rule. if your room is large and square with windows and natural light coming from just one direction, we recommend that you consider installing the floor in the direction of the main light source. this will allow daylight to flow up the grain of the floor and reduce the appearance of joints within the floor’s surface.


floorS fEEl DiffErENtlYthe kind of surface you choose decides the feeling you get from walking on the floor. Your feet are, in other words, the part of your body that will feel the wood the most. if you want a flat, smooth surface underfoot, choose a floor with a silk matt finish. to feel the wood more, choose a brushed floor. as well as feeling totally different to walk on, they also reflect light differently. feel the floor!

citY SElEctioNthese floors are stylishly understated; they are created from a uniform and regular timber grade with small variations in grain and tone. they can be light or dark, depending on the wood species, but the tone and overall effect is uniform. if you want a calm, minimalistic impression, look for a floor in the city selection.

1-StriP DESigN – SiNglE PiEcEthe surface of the board is sawn in one piece. this emphasises the natural feel and shows the character of the wood species to its full effect.

SilK Mattour silk matt lacquer complements the wood’s character by accentuating its natural structure. it also makes the floor more hardwearing and easier to clean. at the same time, the lacquer is one of the thinnest available, so it doesn’t conceal the wood’s natural lustre.

3-StriP DESigNthe wear layer is three strips’ wide. the strips are individually selected and are different in length. Each strip is positioned at random on the flooring plank, creating a unique floor design.

BruShEDBrushing the surface highlights the natural structure of the grain and creates additional texture. Brushing is usually accompanied by other surface treatments, such as a bevelled finish and a coloured stain or glaze.

towN SElEctioNDark or light, these floors are characterised by subtle variations in tone and pattern, without knots. they form a classic backdrop, allowing the rest of the decoration to take ‘centre stage’. if you’re looking for a floor with minimal variations, take a look at our town selection.

Mattour matt lacquer creates the impression that the floor is made from untreated bare wood, or has a natural oil prefinish. the soft-to-the-touch natural surface is incredibly tactile and pleasing underfoot. Matt lacquer is as hardwearing and easy to maintain as silk matt lacquer.

PattErNa classic floor that benefits from a modern construction. the surface layer features a repeating box pattern made up of three vertical strips, laid side by side, divided by one horizontal strip across the top. when the boards have been installed, they create a stunning ‘cable stitch’ pattern.

StaiNEDStains can be used to further enhance natural colour tones – from the palest white and whisper greys, to rich mocha and charcoal shades.

couNtrY SElEctioNif you’re looking for a more rustic floor, you will probably like our country selection. here you will find dramatic graining, gnarls and knots, with greater colour variation, for a bold and unmistakably natural look.

NaturE oil Kährs Nature oil gives your floor a wonderfully natural and beautiful feel. the oil brings out the wood’s texture and graining, and enhances its tone. while easy to maintain, remember that floors treated with Nature oil need a little more care and should be treated with Kährs oil refresher regularly.

ShiP’S DEcKa floor with a maritime feel, it has a decorative strip edge, and wood plugs at the end of each board, to give a real ship’s deck look. the strip and plugs form part of each 1-strip board and the floor is installed in exactly the same way as our other wood floors.

BEVEllED EDgESBevelling the edges of a 1-strip floor board accentuates its plank shape. from a micro-bevel (a slight accentuation of the edge using sandpaper) to a more dramatic, stronger bevel on all edges, this design feature gives the floor a more rustic and distinct look.

claSSic SElEctioNour classic floors offer a little more refinement and allow you to introduce added character to your room. Products labelled classic have been treated and refined using unique wood processing methods, sometimes combined with a glaze or coloured stain.

haNDScraPEDthe rich character surface providing a truly rustic feel is created by hand using different wood scraping and sanding tools to give the old worn wood appearance. it creates a wood floor with the look and feel of an old floor worn by time with a lot of rich character markings.

Kährs plain-sawn wear layer is fully comparable in thickness to a solid strip floor wear layer. this is because sanding is only possible down to the tongue and groove in solid floors.

uNDErfloor hEatiNg Kährs floors and underfloor heating go hand-in-hand. however, certain points should be considered: the surface temperature of the finished floor must never exceed 27°c in any area. another point is that certain wood species, such as beech and hard maple, are not suitable to combine with underfloor heating.


thE StroNgESt SurfacE that woN’t turN YEllowthe surface of the floor is visually the most important part. the surface treatment should therefore be strong enough to withstand daily wear and tear, but thin enough so as not to hide the wood’s lustre.

thE BESt cliMatE StaBilitYSince wood is a natural material, that is affected by climatic changes, a wood floor moves with the seasons. to minimise movement, it is important to obtain the right balance between the different layers in each board – top, core and backing


aShthe sapwood is almost white and the heartwood ranges from grey through light brown to light yellow with brown streaks. Some grades have very special figuring, which gives the floor an entirely unique and lively character.

EuroPEaN MaPlEcompared with hard Maple, European Maple has a lustre all of its own that gives the room a clean airy feel. the thin annual rings and soft figuring make it unique.

hardness: 20% softer than oak

oaKwhite oak is the most popular species for floors and furniture in Europe and the uSa due to its beautiful appearance and long life.

colour change: a medium degree of colour change with slight ambering over time.

hardness: oak is hard, dense and extremely strong which makes it highly suitable for floors. we use oak as a reference when we compare with other wood species.

BEEchBeech ranges in colour from light cream to medium tan/brown with pink-orange overtones. it is usually straight-grained, with dense figuring that adds warmth, while its uniform appearance makes the room seem airy.

hardness: Same hardness as oak

harD MaPlEthe sapwood is cream-coloured, with a tendency to reddish brown, and the heartwood varies from light to dark brown with red highlights. it usually has fine figuring with a straight, but sometimes slightly wavy grain.

Bircha stiff wood with excellent shock resistance. Birch is usually straight-grained, with a fine, often wavy, structure. a birch floor gives the room a light, elegant look and can help to accentuate the rest of the decor.

hicKorYhickory heartwood is tan or reddish; sapwood is white to cream, with fine brown lines.

walNuta dark, exclusive wood with a sapwood that is creamy white but the heartwood is a light brown to dark chocolate brown, sometimes with a tendency to purple. the wood gains a special lustre over the years.

chErrYa beautiful and versatile species, warm, individual and charming. the sapwood is creamy white while the heartwood can vary from deep red to reddish brown, which together forms a fine-figured, straight grain.


colour change: cherry undergoes an extreme degree of colour change with pronounced darkening to a dark reddish colour when fully aged.


JarrahJarrah has been used traditionally because of its durability and hardness. it has a smooth surface and straight graining. the sapwood and heartwood vary from salmon-pink to deep red.
