Mid-winter winner scores top prize

Many questions in Maungaturoto

A farewell after twenty years

pThousands of entries came in and the draw was packed when the Kaipara Lifestyler asked local Justice of the Peace Kaye Welch (of Walden’s Shoes) to do the honours. After a dip into the prize box the name which came out was that of Mr Tony Oliver, who stopped in at Woody’s Winners and has now scored $250 to spend with them! Congratulations Mr Oliver — we will have your prize to you soon. And congratulations to all those businesses who took part — as each entry represents a customer shopping in the Kaipara we calculate that local business is definitely looking up!

pCommunity organisations put on an afternoon tea at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club to say thank you to Main Coachline driver, Pieter Fakkers and his wife Audrey for their service. Pieter made his last bus trip down to Auckland on June 30, retiring after 20 years of driving. Regular customer and owner of Gloria’s Flowers, Gloria Seymour, presented Pieter with a large bouquet of flowers, and the Kauri Coast Info Pod presented the couple with a kauri bowl. Among the large turn out was the original driver, Tom Storey, who sold the business to Pieter around a decade ago.

New aviary built by kindergarten by Rose Rees-Owen

pJorjah-Lee Thompson, Luka Searle and Caleb Tittleton pretend they are birds outside the new aviary

Dargaville Kindergarten’s cockatiels, Sarah and Sam, now have a spacious new home to fly in, thanks to the pre-schoolers and a few helping hands.

“The children did most of it themselves,” says teacher and project manager, Marisa Du Toit, “it was a big project and they have been incredibly persistent and determined to finish it.”

It has taken around two months to complete and began with a trip to ITM Building Centre to choose materials which they bought at discounted prices.

“They’ve done a really good job,” says Brent Steed from ITM, “there’s obviously a few budding carpenters among them.”

They then went to work sawing timber, measuring and cutting chicken wire, and hammering nails.

“They worked together as a team to build the bird house,” says head teacher Heather Moselen, “this is all part of their learning experiences at kindergarten.”

Previously, Sarah the cockatiel, had a small enclosure but she now has room to fly, and have company.

“Sarah has a boyfriend,” says the children in unison. Sam the cockatiel joins her much to the children’s excitement of possible baby cockatiels.

Sam was donated by Noah, who attends the kindergarten, and his parents and grandparents who own a aviary.

Heather says a special thanks goes to Louise Spraggon and Keith Allen for helping with the construction. ¢

Trash to treasure by Rose Rees-Owen

Tinopai resident, Colleen Jamieson, took one of the themes of the Wearable Arts Gala, turning trash into treasure, literally.

While gardening she came across a large amount of rubbish and decided to recycle some of the material for her entry in the Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala, August 24. “I’ve found aluminum cans, bottles, broken glass, a coffee machine, even a stereo,” says Colleen who moved to Tinopai in February.

While there is a “Rubbish” category, she plans to enter the “Bizarre Bra” as well as the “Curious Codpiece” categories but isn’t giving any details away about her garments wanting them to be a surprise.

As a full time fibre artist, her skills will come in handy. She makes ‘one off’ original clothes and plans to sell them on long weekends and around Christmas time on her deck when the traffic increases on the road to Tinopai.

Entries close July 31 and spokesperson, Loraine Rowlands, says

there is still time to get entry forms in and make a garment before the rehearsal on August 17.

The Supreme Award winner will receive two tickets to the World of Wearable Art award show in Wellington with all expenses paid — a prize worth over $1,000.

Loraine says interest in the gala has been great and workshops are being held in Paparoa and Waipu during the school holidays for children 12 and under to prepare their entry in the headgear section.

For entries and enquiries see www.paparoanz.org.nz or phone 09 431 8636 or 09 431 6515. ¢

It’s hot, tasty, round and flat, and it counts as the world’s favourite takeaway meal.

Accredited to the Italians, but in fact based on a recipe snaffled by Marco Polo from the far east, the humble pizza is a good old fashioned Kiwi dinner, despite its overseas origins. The best part is, anchovies, olives or not, it’s a favourite for the whole family.

Now Dargaville boasts its own dedicated pizza restaurant, opening this week in the main street of the riverside town.

Mr Pizza is the name of this new establishment, and piping hot pizza pie is their game, with a menu ‘leaked to the press’ offering all the classic toppings and combinations which you’d expect from the pizza pros.

Proprietor Raj and his team of chefs have plenty of experience, and they expect this new restaurant to garner a popular local following. The Mr Pizza recipe is for fast,

hot pizza made with lashings of cheese and fresh ingredients, such as chicken and cranberry, beef Moroccan and garlic prawn just to name a few. There are even vegetarian options and a full range of sides to make a meal of it.

Their timing couldn’t be better with the new Anzac Theatre opening its doors in the same week — pizza and a movie returns to Dargaville after a long hiatus thanks to this nice coincidence. And there’s good news on the horizon for those who like the comforts of home without the cooking as well — Mr Pizza’s plans include the establishment of a delivery service in the near future to whisk hot pizza all over town.

Drop in for a slice or two when the doors open this week, or even better (bosses take note) grab a ‘work shout’ or a family meal to enjoy.

Flat out and tasty in DargavilleNew grants for tourism by Paul Campbell

Kaipara tourism businesses are being encouraged to see if they meet the criteria for applications to the $28 million Tourism Growth Partnership announced by Prime Minister and Tourism Minister, John Key.

“This is a new initiative which will provide a great opportunity for the industry and I want to encourage Northland to get involved,” said Northland MP, Mike Sabin.

The $28 million will be made available over four years, supporting innovative projects that will create new opportunities and overcome barriers to growth in the tourism sector.

The fund will be a contestable co-investment programme, with every approved project receiving up to 50 per cent of the required funding from government. “Tourism is one of the lifeblood’s of the Northland economy, contributing close to $100m to GDP in 2012, and providing around 4,500 jobs,” Mr Sabin added. “Northland is the place where New Zealand’s story can be told authentically and the icons of our

country such as the mighty kauri can be showcased. We already have a highly innovative tourist sector and this growth partnership can further grow its appeal and capacity,” says Mr Sabin.

The fund will be administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment with the first funding round later this year. ¢

Entertainment that featured back in the 19th century is being rolled out in the coming school holidays.

In a ‘blast from the past’ the Kauri Museum is to stage a series of ‘Dowson Magic Lantern’ shows, named after Eggbert John Dowson — Bert to his family — who once travelled Northland giving slide shows to rural and town communities.

The slide shows will be part of a busy holiday programme at the museum that will include kauri gum polishing, pianola recitals, storytelling, and more.

“We are sure the kids will bring along their grandparents too, so it will be a great shared experience,” said museum CEO, Bet Nelley.

“Bert Dowson was born in Kaiwaka and as a young man he travelled the world. While in the United States he visited Thomas Edison and purchased a magic lantern and a set of slides. He used to show these in Kaiwaka and then in 1899 he bought a buggy and harness and took a travelling slide show around Northland.

Osteopath Chris Longley is proud to serve the people of the Kaipara District, helping his patients lead full and healthy lives and recover from the aches, pains and strains of modern living.

Since 2005 he’s been practising Osteopathy — a holistic, ‘big picture’ form of treatment which looks at the body as a whole, rather than simply treating the symptoms of pain and injury.

“We can help with just about everything,” he says. “From acute treatments for specific injuries to more generalised treatments, covering nerves, muscles, even the circulatory and digestive systems.”

A common confusion is that Osteopaths work solely with bones, but in fact this medical discipline goes far further with its hands-on approach. Developed in America in the 1860s by Andrew Taylor Still, a student of human anatomy, Osteopathy is a thoroughly modern method with proven results.

“In fact, a lot of what I do is about telling people what to change in their lifestyle,” says Chris. “Good advice is just as important to ongoing health as treatment itself. Historical factors, work factors and more all come into the equation.”

Osteopathy is suitable for all kinds of people from all walks of life and Chris has successfully treated everyone from infants to the elderly, sportspeople, office workers and farmers. Here in the Kaipara this last group are of special concern, as hard rural work can place huge demands on the body. Chris is putting his five years of intensive study and his further years of practical experience to use across the district, working with patients to effect change in their health and in their lives. He operates a clinic in Dargaville on Wednesdays, at 4 Parore St (behind Firestone) and one in

Your general practitioner may refer you to an osteopath if this kind of treatment is right for you, and Osteopathic consultations are subsidised by ACC for those who need them. Chris is also an ACC accredited Osteopath so if you need treatments as a result of an accident you don’t need to visit your GP first, Chris can do the necessary paperwork at the clinic. Chris invites anyone who suffers from pains, strains, discomfort or even arthritis to come and talk to him about affecting change and living a more active, healthy life.

An artistic celebration

Time to get film-making

Four local schools in environment awards

Three very successful years will be marked by the Dargaville Arts Association with a members’ exhibition from July 23 to August 6, at 108 Victoria Street in Dargaville.

Dargaville Community Cinema Trust secretary, Jacoba Puharich, encourages budding filmmakers to take part in the fourth short film competition.

“This is to be a celebration of our three years working together and to present new artworks from the 40-plus members who form this community association, and who have created various milestones to their credit,” said association chair, Allan Mortensen.

“Among these were the opening of the Muddy Waters Gallery, on the corner of Parenga and Kapia Streets and working with the Mangawhai

Jacoba says this year is special because it’s the first time judging can take place in the brand new Anzac Theatre in the War Memorial Hall on Hokianga Road.

“It’s really exciting,” says Jacoba, “it’s always been our goal to create a space which can be used by the community.”

It has also sponsored two shows in Dargaville by entertainer/pianist Jan Preston from Australia and as part of the performing arts side of the association, recently started an Acoustic Blackboard Concert on the first Thursday of the month, at the Commercial B and B.

“Out of this has come the formation of the Rivertown Singers, a men’s group which also will welcome more

Films are a maximum length of eight minutes and can be across all genres but must relate to the Kaipara. All ages can enter with an open, secondary school, and primary school category.

“Creativity, entertainment value and relevance to the Kaipara are the three main points judges will be looking for.”

She adds the trust has a camera that can be loaned out to interested filmmakers.

Jacoba says she has been liaising with the organisers of the Outlook for Someday Project who will provide a free film workshop for young people,

Projects involving everything from disappearing native frogs to re-emerging kiwi are among 25 school initiatives to share this year’s $20,000 Northland Regional Council Environmental Curriculum Awards, with four awards going to Kaipara schools.

The annual awards foster excellence in environmental education, with schools eligible for up to $2,000 each for their efforts to educate children on the region’s environment.

In all, 23 Northland recipients will receive between $200 and $1,700 each for their 25 projects.

Regional councillor Bill Rossiter says the awards recognise and support the

environmental education efforts put in by more than 2,200 Northland students in 140 classes and/or school student environmental groups.

“It’s also great to once again see a good geographic spread with eight of our winning schools based in the Far North, eleven in the Whangarei district and four in Kaipara,” he said.

The Kaipara schools were:Dargaville Intermediate. Minimising

waste. Funding: $700 towards a woodchipper The whole school is involved with 190-plus students aged 11–13 across 10 speciality environmental education classes.

Music, Matinees and Cowboys at the Empire by Brian Eastwood

For a young man around Dargaville town in the forties and fifties decades the Empire Theatre was the place to be seen. Wearing sports coat and tie, with hair slicked down, it was also the place to check out the other guys and girls.

Three changes of program showed each week. Craftily arranged, there was a double movie feature on Saturday night and an appropriate matinee for the younger set, often a Western serial and cartoons on Saturday afternoon. But if you couldn’t make it on Saturday night there was a rerun of the same ‘pictures’ on Monday night.

On Thursday and Friday night there was a double feature, usually screening a shoot-em-up cowboy show with perhaps a crime movie. A complete change of program came on Tuesday and Wednesday to round off your movie week.

Typical of shows in 1942 was ‘Birth of the Blues’, starring Bing Crosby and Mary Martin. Billboards told of ‘music from the heart of Dixie, shuffling dances from New Orleans docks, wailing saxophones and singing  trombones’. Although a Victoria Street frontage had ‘Empire Theatre’ in large letters across the top, that was not the picture theatre. After Williams Ball and Fannon, now Jack Fannon Ltd, built their new shop in 1924 they bought two shops next door. Demolishing them both in 1929, they erected that two storied building that is still there.

On the bottom floor was an early style arcade, with a walkway that led along to the Empire Theatre, built back off the street eight years earlier in 1916. Front left was Miss A. R. Thurston’s Milk Bar, now Murdoch’s Empire Luncheonette and from where ice cream boys came at half time to stand in the theatre aisles and sell their wares. A hairdresser occupied the shop on the right front, with two smaller shops behind it.

1937 saw a major rebuild of the theatre. It took a couple of months but North Auckland Times reported that the original theatre had been really transformed. Local tradesmen did the job with main contractors, builder B. G. Smith, electrical work by McKay Electrical and heating and ventilation by Phillips and Collard. Architecturally designed for 1,000 patrons it was state of the art, right up there with New Zealand’s top

movie houses. It looked like a big red corrugated iron shed on the outside but inside it really lived up to its billing of ‘New Empire Theatre Deluxe’.

Amalgamated Theatre owners, Michael and P.J. Moodabe, arrived for the grand opening of the stylish movie theatre on Friday, July 30 1937, together with town dignitaries and Dargaville Mayor, F.A. Jones.

A top program was shown, with a first half of latest Fox news followed by a series of ‘shorts’. The main feature was ‘The Holy Terror’ starring Jane Withers, Anthony Martin and Joan Davies.

For the next thirty-five years the Empire Theatre was a social focal point, entertaining and pleasing town people and country folk. But television and videos slowly took over with readily available films to watch at home. By October 1984 it was all over.

McKay Properties had bought the building, renting it out to a clothing factory working in the old building. Over the next ten years at various times, a laundry, an aluminum joinery workshop and the ‘Big Pineapple’ fruit and vegetable market traded from there. But McKay Properties realised in 1994 that there was too much risk in letting the empty 78-year-old building just fall down. It was demolished with timber going to Auckland’s Kauri Timber Warehouse and the corrugated iron sold off locally. Within a few weeks the old landmark had gone. ¢

Convincing an increasingly auto-savvy and demanding public that your car is a great investment as well as a lifestyle option year after year through many generations is tough, especially as trends change and the desire for greater safety, more gadgets and more comfort becomes more avid.

But achieve this chemistry and you’ve got a chance at that iconic status. It’s a long and winding road, but it’s one which has been handled with aplomb by New Zealand’s favourite car, the Toyota Corolla, winner of the AA’s coveted Car of the Decade award. Following the progression of technology, performance

New angle on a Kiwi favourite by Andy Bryenton

Although the word ‘iconic’ is used a lot these days, for everything from buildings to sports celebrities, it takes a long time to really create a Kiwi motoring icon.

and style from the first generation of the Corolla through the 1980s, the 1990s and into the new century is like looking at a diagram of the evolution of man, with a steep gradient tracing out the addition of ABS, traction control, stability control, airbags — in fact, the whole suite of modern automotive essentials.

The 2013 GX model may sit at the bottom end of Toyota’s price range, just a touch under $30k. But it sits at the bottom of this impressive family tree as well, descended from the car your dad, mum uncle, brother or mate is statistically very likely to have driven somewhere in the past few decades. It’s still the kind of car which you can slip into and be comfortable with straight off the lot, and it’s still a practical tool for in-city work, with easy parking, room to manoeuvre and a voluminous cargo space for its size.

But there are two tricks up the GX model’s sleeve which make it more than just a logical choice. Firstly, there’s the quiet 7-stage CVT transmission, hooked up to an engine which has been given a little attention to produce fuel economy figures in the mid-sixes.

That’s good news for those faced with the Government’s new fuel tax. And the second, more ineffable factor is that this little car is simply good fun. Perhaps its an echo of all those Corolla road trips, date nights, beach holidays and country drives from the previous nine generations? The engineers and designers at Toyota have captured the sense of ‘go-anywhere, do-anything’ which made the Corolla’s ancestors such local heroes, and given it a shot of modernity. Kind of like the new Superman — a classic reborn with a little added edge. ¢

Gloria’sFlowers & Gifts

I have always loved flowers and my father grew most of the flowers for me when I first started Floristry.

In 1975 I began working from home after purchasing a local teleflorists business. In 1986 we decided to combine the floristry and gifts to give Dargaville a bright and cheerful new shop in town.

Being self taught, I have enjoyed going to conferences and work shops around New Zealand to catch up on new ideas and designs. Keeping up to date is very important in this ever changing world .

After the local Infterflora florist closed down I then became an Interflora florist. We are now members of Interflora, Teleflora & Petals. These are worldwide organisations so we can have flowers delivered just about anywhere in the world.

Louise Harrison and I have worked together for about 15 years and try to provide a friendly pleasant environment for people to visit, purchase or just to smell the flowers.

Most days you would find us making arrangements for Birthdays, Annivseraries, Thank You’s or just because. We do a lot of funeral work and usually know the deceased’s favourite flowers or colours and enjoy making something really special for them

We do cover a wide area and send flowers out by Rural Delivery, Bus and Courier as well as our personal delivery lady, Shirley. My Husband Roger and I enjoy our garden and I have just joined the Stepping Out marching team.

We especially love spending time as a family with our 7 grand children.

And it’s fantastic to see customers responding so positively. The Ranger certainly is the current hero but with other new vehicles coming in and our expanding range over the next few years, New Zealanders have a lot to look forward to as well.”

A sneak peek at some of the highlights coming to Kiwi shores soon backs up Mr Hill’s optimism. Two fresh iterations of the popular Fiesta are slated, at different ends of the driving spectrum — the fiery Fiesta ST is set to arrive in August, and boasts a 0 to

Ranger riding high as new lineup loomsFieldays in Mystery Creek may have been a good one for Ford in New Zealand, but this was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for their popular Ranger ute, which has topped nationwide sales figures for the last two months running.

100kph time in the high sixes. The all new Fiesta will be here late in 2013, with the ultra-efficient and award winning EcoBoost 1.0 engine under the hood, just the tonic to beat new fuel taxes.

Next year will see the launch of a new, updated Falcon, a new Territory SUV, and the introduction of an all new small SUV as well — the EcoSport. While a fresh look and some technological tweaks are a lock for the first two, the EcoSport is the one to watch — a whole new platform for Ford and a vehicle which is already being talked about. ¢

Stylists Krista, Petra, Sue and Nicki make up the Fibre team, offering a full range of hair style and care services from the simple and chic to the glamorous and avant-garde. As well as a new name, Fibre embraces a new attitude of progress, learning and growth.

The role comes with a great deal of responsibility to our residents, their families, staff and our organisation. We strive to provide quality care that is person centred and tailored to the individual residents needs, getting to know our residents and the little things that they enjoy is critical to their care plan. My favourite time of the day is when I take the time to wonder around the home and chat with Residents, they have so many wonderful stories to share I never get bored of listening. It is a very rewarding role knowing that I can help bring quality to our residents lives, and help them continue to be an active part of our community and lead rich and fulfilling days at Kauri Coast.
