Healthy hearts jump for joyMatakohe Primary School has become the first school in Northland to achieve a Heart Start Excellence Award from the Heart Foundation.

The school was presented with the award by the foundation’s local Health Promotion Coordinator Abi Alger.

To mark the occasion, students took part in a Jump Rope for Heart skip-a-thon, which saw them raise money for the Heart Foundation while also getting their hearts and legs pumping.

Heart Start Excellence is a free, curriculum-aligned programme designed for schools wanting to excel and do regular activities around healthy eating and/or physical activity. “To achieve at excellence level a school must take a school-wide approach to creating a healthy environment and do sustainable work that spans the entire school community.

“Well done to the whole Matakohe School community, and special recognition goes out to teacher Sara McKinley, who coordinated the project. She was well supported by her teaching colleagues, the Heart Foundation and Project Energize’s Clark Lewis. Sara McKinley said it

was a proud moment for everyone at the school. Jump Rope for Heart, the Heart Foundation’s longest running education programme, encourages physical activity in education settings, helping children gain skills of balance, rhythm, timing coordination and jumping. Stage one of the project has an estimated cost of $2.2 million, and with the Lotteries grant now secured, less than $200,000 is now required.

This stage includes provision of six courts for shared tennis and netball use, plus the building of a 580-square-metre new facility, incorporating four large changing rooms, public toilets, storage facilities for user groups, a canteen/coffee outlet and a tournament control office. A covered muster area is also included to provide shelter for players from rain and sun.

Mr Biddle said the Lottery Community Facilities Fund Committee considered

the Dargaville application aligned very well with the committee’s priorities and funding criteria.

The latest grant comes hard on the heels of a $1.033 million donation from Foundation North in November last year.

“We are very thankful to the Lotteries Board for this fantastic grant, which now means that well over 90 per cent of the funds required to complete stage one of the facility have been confirmed.”

Construction is likely to start later this year — Griffiths and Associates are underway as project managers, with the appointment of a main contractor one of their first tasks. ¢

Trees close to powerlines can be dangerous. Falling branches can break lines, causing fire and the risk of electrocution. A person who touches a tree which is in contact with a powerline can suffer an electric shock. In high winds trees can damage powerlines and equipment, causing power failures and danger to the public. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 (Tree Regulations 2003) were introduced to ensure that trees are kept away from powerlines to protect the security of the electricity supply and for everyone’s safety. The risk of property damage (e.g. from fire) is also reduced. Under the Regulations, trees must be kept clear of powerlines as shown here:

Liability and OffencesNorthpower and tree owners must comply with these Tree Regulations 2003 or face penalties. Northpower is required under the Tree Regulations 2003 to advise tree owners of their obligations and the penalties for NOT meeting their obligations, specifically.

1. Tree owners who receive a Cut or Trim Notice are required to ensure that the tree(s) is cut or trimmed to outside of the notice zone in the time required by the notice.

2. Tree owners must also ensure that they advise Northpower of the time and location of this work at least three (3) working days prior to work being undertaken.

Penalties ApplyTree owners who fail to comply with these requirements could be fined up to $10,000 plus up to $500 a day for a continuing offence. In addition, tree owners could also be liable for costs if Northpower lines or equipment are damaged by their tree(s).Tree Work to be done by Competent Authorised Tree WorkersBecause cutting and trimming trees around powerlines is dangerous and potentially lethal, only electrically competent tree workers authorised by Northpower may do this work near Northpower Network Lines. Unauthorised workers – including tree and property owners together with any equipment they may be using – are not permitted to come within four metres of any live powerlines nor to cut or trim any tree which has any growth within four metres of live powerlines, without written consent (from Northpower for Northpower Lines).Tree SurveysNorthpower regularly inspects their network lines as required by the regulations and notifies tree owners of any identified tree problems. In all cases it’s the tree owner who decides the future of their tree(s) i.e. if the tree(s) is trimmed or removed. In some situations this tree work is done by Northpower at their expense. Call Northpower 0800 667 847 for more information regarding any charges for tree clearance work.More InformationThis notice provides you with the information as required by the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003. More detailed information is available on our website www.northpower.com or by calling 0800 667 847.

The tree in this illustration will need to be cut or trimmed because it encroaches the Growth Limit Zone.

Greater clearances than shown above are needed for lines with spans longer than 150 metres.

The Notice Zone extends one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone. The Tree Regulations 2003 require that trees encroaching the Growth Limit Zone must be cut or trimmed to (at least) the outside edge of the Notice Zone.

New helm at Art ‘n’ Tartanu by Rose Stirling

Former theatre actor and school teacher Alister Williams is the new director of the Art ‘n’ Tartan Wearable Art Awards, to be staged at Waipu next month.

Mr Williams will direct a large contingent of artists, designers and a crew of volunteers. Promotions team member Patsy Montgomery says he brings to the show a lifetime of experience in theatre, music and teaching. “Alister was for a short time the former head of English at Otamatea High School in the late 70s and early 80s. He and his wife Susan and their family made many friends in the area but eventually moved south to Wellington. Later Alister moved north to play the role of Reverend McLeod with the Waipu Grand Pageant.

“This provided opportunities for old friends to suggest that Alister and Susan consider returning to the north and in particular Waipu. Alister will

create a kaleidoscope of artwork, music, light and dance interwoven with myth and magic.”

Tickets for the awards, to be held in Waipu’s Celtic Barn on July 22–23, can be found atwaipumuseum.com. ¢

Never too late to studyu by Ayla Miller

Alaina Samson is a walking example of the saying ‘where there is a will there is a way’.

The solo mother of two is the inaugural winner the Zonta Club of Mangawhai Second Chance Study Award and will receive $2,500 towards tuition costs.

She is in the final six months of a Bachelor of Nursing degree at Northtec and has completed her studies whilst also working part-time.

“I did everything a bit backwards,” she says. “I had my children first and then I did my study.

“I wanted to prove a point that it’s never too late. Most of the people in my class are over 30 years of age and from all walks of life,” she says.

“Most of them are mothers and are juggling kids or just want a career change. The older people seem to do better because they really want to be there.”

Alaina has always wanted to do nursing and says she could not have achieved it without the help of her father who lives with her and her daughters, Beth and Tessa.

As she has to travel to Whangarei for the course, she says receiving the scholarship will take some of the financial pressure off as she begins her final placement at Whangarei Hospital.

Zonta Club of Mangawhai committee member Sue Poynter says Alaina was an outstanding candidate.

“She has succeeded in challenging circumstances and everyone who has

contact with her recognises her as a most deserving recipient. She not only demonstrates perseverance and commitment to her ongoing education and future profession, but is conscious of being a positive role model for her daughters. She is humble in her success, offering to assist with the catering for our upcoming ball — her way to ‘pay it forward’.”

Zonta will hold their annual ball, dinner and auction at the Hakaru Hall on June 25 from 6.30pm–midnight. Tickets can be purchased at Bammas or Mangawhai Pharmacy. Funds raised will go towards the 2017 Zonta Second Chance Study and Spirit of Adventure scholarships. ¢

Winston talks businessu by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Business Forum will be hosting Northland MP, Winston Peters, at a breakfast giving the business community the opportunity to hear his views on the economic recovery for rural New Zealand and funding for infrastructure in the regions.

“As MP for Northland Mr Peters can give us an insight on what he believes is happening in the Kaipara, Northland and to the rest of the country,” said chair Peter Boyd.

“His views on where the strong points are in the community and where we should be heading and trying to build upon will be useful knowledge for the district. As business people it will be a good opportunity to hear his opinion on national and local matters including council and the upcoming local body elections.”

There will be a question and answer time at the session.

“It will be good to discuss what really matters to us as residents, business people and the local community,” said Mr Boyd.

Mr Peters will talk on topics such as the regions producing export receipts, and attracting tourists and the need to ensure a fair return of the nation’s wealth to the regions and the taking of water by foreign companies for a token.

“We welcome new members to the Business Forum and would like to hear from people who may be interested in becoming committee members to assist in driving a vibrant business

community.” The business forum host one event each month. These include a variety of activities such as guest speakers, product information nights and competitions.

Breakfast with Mr Peters has limited spaces and will be held on Monday July 4 at the Commercial Hotel, 75 River Road, Dargaville, with breakfast starting at 7am sharp. The cost is $10 for non members and $5 for members. For more information or to RSVP email [email protected]. ¢

Positive future for clubu by Ann Morgan

The Northern Wairoa Returned Services Association has outlined a restructuring plan to take the club into the future.

Interim RSA president, David Fagan, says the RSA will be run by the members, for the members, through them taking an active role in the club’s affairs.

“ M e m b e r s h a v e demonstrated their support by providing substantial financial assistance through debentures and loans,” said Mr Fagan.

“By implementing proper business practices, this will enable the club to remain solvent for the foreseeable future.”

He acknow ledged assistance from the executive committee and staff, as well as the Whangarei RSA.

“They have provided vital administration advice allowing us to become more efficient. The kitchen will be leased to Kim’s Cuisine, a well established catering business with the reputation of providing quality food.

“In every small settlement you will find a War Memorial. While the numbers of returned men and women have dwindled the reason for the RSA’s existence has not. In 1975 the stated aim of the RSA was the welfare of its members and the community. Today it is

Kim Duder says managing the kitchen is an exciting opportunity.

Film festival draws a crowd Building on successu by Rose Stirling

u by Ayla Miller

It was a full house at the Anzac theatre’s opening night of it’s annual Classics Film Festival.

Dargaville couple Donna and Nigel Randell have brought home a box full of trophies after winning big at the recent New Zealand Amateur Bodybuilding Association Counties Manukau Regional Championship.

The theme of the festival being films featuring ‘cars, guns and dames’ drew crowds to the theatre to watch the 1942 Oscar winning cult hit, Casablanca, last Friday.

Theatre trustees, Graeme Ramsey and Josie Scott, said it was great to see the theatre packed out.

“The night was made extra special by having a Royal New Zealand Navy Band member, Warwick Simpson of Ruawai, play some classic tunes on the piano including some of the songs

Donna won Miss Figure 2016 and International Figure, whilst Nigel was first place in the Masters Men 40 plus class.

They both won the NABBA Counties Manukau Champion Class mixed pairs as well as best gym which they received for their own Randell Family Gym.

“It’s always gruelling,” Donna says of the training. For this competition they began preparing after a brief break when they returned from the NABBA International Universe Championships in the Philippines in November last year.

The couple only had 11 weeks of dieting instead of the usual 17 and despite this still came out on top.

“We enjoy the buzz of the day and the people we compete with. Having a competition to work towards keeps you honest and focussed. It helps with the dieting and training and keeps us mentally on track,” Donna said.

The couple train five days a week for two hours a day plus cardio twice a day. On the weekends the couple have

from Casablanca, and audience members dressing to theme added to the joy of the evening.”

The Classics Film Festival now in it’s second year is sponsored by the Dargaville Rotary club and to celebrate opening night, free drinks and nibbles were offered to film goers as part of their usual ticket price.

The film festival continues to run from June 21–26. To view a full guide of what’s on visit www.anzactheatre.co.nz.

a break but still do two sessions of cardio. Along with the intense training schedule, Donna spends a lot of time preparing meals.

“If I don’t have gym equipment in my hands I have cooking equipment,” she says.

Nigel says he was motivated this time by the disappointment he faced at the International Universe Championships when he fell ill and had to drop out of the competition and they both have their eyes set on the National Championships held in October. ¢

VITAL ADVICE FOR PROPERTY INVESTORS

With house prices high in Auckland, but remaining eminently affordable here in the Kaipara, many people are discovering the potential profits and pitfalls of becoming a property investor. To

help maximise the benefits and mitigate the risks, it's always best to seek timely advice from experts inside the property industry and First

National Roper and Jones are just the team to ask.

One hot topic at the forefront of the property investment list involves recent changes to the rules regarding insulation and smoke alarms in rental homes. From 1 July this year, insulation must be installed in

all rental properties, with a timeline of full compliance set down from this time in 2019. That's a long time to roll out the new rules, but time is much shorter if you want to catch a subsidy which could save you thousands on completing insulation work. To apply for a subsidy you

must receive a quote by the end of this month. So visit www.healthyhomesnorth.co.nz and apply now!

The new law change also mandates smoke alarms for all rental properties, a great move which will save lives. Both of these changes

to the Residential Tenancies Act are easy to comply with and your tenure as a landlord can be made even easier by having us take

care of your investment in the capacity of property managers. Call us today to find the perfect investment property, expand your portfolio or let us assist you in managing your assets to the best advantage.

‘March for Moko’ in Dargavilleu by Rose Stirling

Ka ipa ra Abuse Prevention Strengthening Families coordinator, Bethne Smith, is encouraging everyone to support the cause.

“Anyone who wants to see justice for Moko or anyone who is opposed to child abuse should come along.”

SOS Kaipara worked with 49 clients that have suffered child abuse in the last year.

“What we want to do is get that figure down to zero. Our message is — not one more — children cannot stop child abuse but adults can,” says Bethne.

“Workplaces, schools, clubs, anyone and everyone who is able to give half an hour of their time to join us on our march from the Dargaville band rotunda to the Dargaville Courthouse is welcome to join us.”

SOS Kaipara, Kaipara Abuse Prevention and The Early Years

community organisations are part of a nationwide series of rallies.

The Dargaville march takes place Monday, June 27 at 12pm starting at the Band Rotunda on Victoria St and finishing up at the courthouse.

p Kaipara Abuse Prevention Strengthening Families Coordinator Bethne Smith is concerned with the number of child abuse cases happening in the Kaipara and urges the community to support the ‘March for Moko’ rally

Community feedback encouragedu by Ayla Miller

The Kaipara District Council wants to hear your thoughts on the proposed improvements on Alamar Crescent in Mangawhai.

The concept plan aim to gain better use of the parking spaces and so have more carparks available along with providing a safe footpath along the foreshore from Sellars Reserve to the boat ramp.

Safety and visibility will also be improved by clearing away vegetation from the roadside, introducing yellow no parking lines and establishing a 30 kilometres an hour speed limit.

General manager community, Venessa Anich, says the council has been working with an advisory group made up of the Mangawhai Boating Club, the Community Trust and a local resident.

“The proposed design is relatively low cost and we think it will provide a good solution for everyone. Feedback from our community survey last year was that there is a strong public desire not to overdevelop the area, to retain the simplicity and low-key feel of the area. We have written to the neighbours who will be directly affected. We also want further feedback from the wider community and regular users of the area.”

Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club Inc president, Isabel Hollis, says the group are happy with the plan.

“We knew the area and the problems that were there and they took on board what we said.”

If there is public support a footpath made of a mix of limestone and cement which is more forgiving around trees than concrete or tarmac will be implemented before summer. Feedback should be provided by July 1, 2016. The plans are available from the KDC website, in the window of the boating club, and the council’s Mangawhai office.

Feedback can be sent to: [email protected]. People can also provide feedback by phone at 0800 727 059. ¢

Essence ofthe east coastu by Ayla Miller

Works by the late artist, John Foster, will be temporarily exhibited at the Mangawhai Museum showcasing his life and the community from which he drew his inspiration.

John Foster was a New Zealand artist and farmer who lived most of his life on a farm near Wellsford and several years living in Mangawhai Heads before he died in 2003.

Exhibition coordinator, Grant Mitchell, says the aim of the exhibition, A Life With Colour, is to introduce Mr Foster’s work to the community and to showcase something that is of interest to the public in the Mangawhai area.

“John Foster spent a lot of time in Mangawhai. He built a bach and stayed there from 1972 until 1980 and during that period he painted a number of murals,” Mr Mitchell said.

“It is not just an exhibition of painting, but of John Foster’s life, the area and how he depicted the area through the use of colour.

“A lot of local people don’t know about him as he was more widely known outside the community. It will be good to introduce his work and give people a different way of viewing the community in which they live in.”

Mr Foster attended four summer schools at the School of Fine Arts,

University of Auckland from 1968 until 1971 and was influenced by his tutors, Sir Tosswill Woollaston and Colin McCahon.

The exhibition opens on July 16 and will present examples of his works including two of his murals.

The murals include Picnic on the Beach, which took four years to complete and Four Seasons on the Farm, which is made up of 365 separate paintings that depict farm life over one year. ¢

After-hours care reviewedChanges made to Kaipara’s after-hours healthcare last year have been reviewed and found to be working well.

Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive officer, Debbie Evans, and board members met with Dargaville Medical Centre, St John and Dargaville Hospital to review the changes to how people were treated between 10pm and 7am in Dargaville.

“During this period, admittance to hospital was for extremely critical patients only, and others were transferred by ambulance to Whangarei Hospital or via the Rescue Helicopter — whatever was the most appropriate,” said Ms Evans.

These changes occurred when Dargaville Medical Centre notified Northland District Health Board that they were no longer able to provide medical care for inpatients at Dargaville Hospital.

The NDHB then stepped in to retain the services by taking over the contract and providing their own doctors.

Between January to April this year there has been 29 transfers in total between the hours of 10pm and 7am, with 11 in January, 12 in February, four in March and three in April. Patients who couldn’t be assisted in Dargaville were always transferred to Whangarei under the old system.

Practice manager/Hospice manager Judy Harris, explained that a plan is currently being developed to ensure palliative care patients have appropriate access to the Kowhai Room.

“Dargaville Medical Centre is proactive and values the monthly ‘clinical integration meetings’ which keeps open dialogue between the different departments ensuring that any issues that may arise are dealt with quickly. We work towards trying to have a seamless patient journey.”

St John Whangarei/Kaipara Territory manager Wally Mitchell says: “While there has been some impact on operational volunteer availability this has been minimal and frontline ambulance crews have adapted well to this new normal.” ¢

SAFE & WARM THIS WINTER?LET US WOF YOUR FIREPLACE

FULLY QUALIFIED PLUMBERSEXPERIENCE & SKILL ON EVERY JOB

A roaring fire is a wonderful thing in the depths of a cold dark winter - so long as it's contained inside the fireplace! To avoid catastrophe, and to stay on the right side of your insurance provider, did you know that you must have your chimney swept regularly?

The image of a chimny sweep - a soot-covered young London lad in a flat cap and overalls - might seem comically antiquated. But even the most modern fireplace in the most modern home needs some care and attention to prevent the buildup of flammable residues inside the flue. These can catch alight inside the roof space, creating a hazard that's almost certain to have alarm bells ringing down at the local station!

Most insurance contracts for homes with fireplaces contain a clause which dictates how often you must have your chimney swept by a professional chimney sweep. Only qualified pros can issue a certificate to say that the job has been done right. This period of time may vary between one and three years. But of course, it's better to be safe!

Another good way to avoid the buildup of dangerous soot and residue in the flue is to avoid burning damp or 'green' firewood. Lay in a store of dry timber and let it season ready for winter - don’t start chopping as the weather turns cold. If you have chimney and fireplace safety questions, feel free to give us a call - we are the team who can WOF your fire for a worry-free winter of warmth!

Plumbing is perhaps the most overlooked of life’s luxuries - simply because when it’s working best, we don’t notice it at all. When leaks, drips, mysterious smells or worse come to your attention, it’s always best to get advice from a trained professional. In fact, it’s the law - serious plumbing work can have a big effect on the health of you and your family. Leaks and busted pipes could ruin the structural integrity of your home. And as for gas leaks... well, you get the picture.

That’s why plumbers and gasfitters must all be literal ‘card carrying’ professionals. There are many levels of skill within the plumbing and gasfitting trade, relating to specific areas of expertise. These are all enumerated and laid out on the special card which proves your local plumber is a fully trained and accredited member of the over-arching New Zealand organisation guaranteeing their work.

Next time you need plumbing work done around the home, remember to ask to see the card of your chosen tradespeople. It’s all right if one of them is an apprentice, learning this important trade the same way plumbers have learned for generations. But they should be accompanied by a fully qualified senior plumber at the same time.

And if there’s no card - it’s no dice! Work completed by a non card-carrying plumber can ruin your home’s value, potentially cause insurance headaches and even lead to knock-on issues with other vital parts of the home. Remember - only deal with the pros, and they’ll keep your plumbing, gas and drainage flowing.

YOU CAN DEPEND ON OUR ADVICE

Electricity is one ‘force of nature’ you don’t want to play around with - the power which provides all the comforts of civilisation, but also a deadly menace if misused. Anyone who has ever witnessed a

lightning strike knows that electrical power has massive potential!

Around the home, it’s always best to have your electrical needs sorted out by a qualified electrician. In fact, it’s the law - and attempting to wire up your own plug sockets or light fittings is not just

dangerous, it can also make it much harder to sell your home or obtain insurance.

There’s a common misconception that it’s alright to move a light fixture, power point or extractor fan, for example, or to ‘re appropriate’ a plug for hard wired use. The reasoning runs that, because the

power draw from the fuse box will be the same, there’s no need to involve a professional. In fact, even moving a light fitting a few feet requires re-certification, which cannot be obtained after the fact, even from a qualified electrician. An electrical inspector must come out to check the work, making it actually

less expensive to simply hire a conventional trades person in the first place.

This time of year puts a heavy load on your homes electrical ‘grid’ - from winter roast dinners to clothes dryers, heat pumps and electric blankets, it’s the one season when you don’t

want electrical faults to leave you cold.

If there’s an issue, call your qualified local Laser team, and let us solve it for you!

Soccer for the littliesu by Ayla Miller

Children between the ages of two and four years old now have a regular chance to burn off some energy with the Wellsford Peewee Soccer Club.

Wellsford mums, Ashleigh Tipene and Sylvia Adams, began the club two years ago when they discovered there was no soccer club for their young sons.

Ashleigh says both their boys who are around the same age are energetic, and she and Sylvia knew there were other children in the area who would benefit from being involved in the sport.

“These games are just for fun and there are no rules.

“This is just kicking the ball around and developing skills. If they choose to continue to play soccer at the next level they have an idea of what to do,” says Sylvia.

“It’s a good starting point for them if they want to continue into junior and senior soccer. It gives them some experience with soccer balls and being on the field so they aren’t scared. They

actually want to get on the field and have a go. It gives them the opportunity to see some of the older children play because it is held at the same time. They can see how much fun they are having and hopefully be inspired to stick with it.”

Ashleigh says the club is also good for families who have just moved to the area and provides a social element for both the parents and the children.

The uniforms are sponsored by local businesses, Adams Installation and Spice Lounge, and the team is supported with player of the day certificates by Warkworth McDonald’s and Clever Endeavours.

Games are held every Saturday at the Port Albert Domain from 9am. For more information visit their Facebook page Wellsford Peewee Soccer. ¢

Power on and off the gridu by Andy Bryenton

This week has seen the Ford Motor Company step up to two big challenges both on and off the grid. Not only have the automakers from Dearborn, Michigan taken to the racing grid on the hallowed tarmac of France’s Circuit de la Sarthe, they’ve also thrown down the gauntlet to rivals at New Zealand’s National Fieldays.

A massive ‘off the grid’ experience was constructed to showcase the capability of the Ford Everest following up from last year’s very successful off-road demo of the Ranger ute. Ford trackscapers literally moved a mountain of gravel and dirt on the Mystery Creek site to allow patrons a chance to see what the new SUV can do. Predictably, the challenging course — with water wading pools, mud, steep hills and rugged terrain — proved a big hit with Fieldays visitors. The choice of the

Everest as Ford’s ‘weapon of choice’ to tackle the track indicates more than just a whole lot of confidence in the Ranger-derived four wheel drive. It’s also a clear signal that Ford intend to stand above the heated scrap for top Kiwi ute. Other brands came to the Fieldays prepped to put their light commercials to the fore — the team from Dearborn are supremely confident of retaining the crown. In France, Kiwi driver Scott Dixon took the wheel as one of the drivers in Ford’s A team, piloting the new GT

race car in the grueling 24 hour GT Pro category against arch-rivals Ferrari. It was a modern-day duel which mirrors historic events, recalling Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon’s winning Ford GT40 bid half a century ago, and once again Ford triumphed.

Both the Fieldays campaign and the Le Mans racing challenge put the cap

on a stellar six months for the blue oval brand, both internationally and here in the Kaipara. An ANCAP safety award for the Transit Custom van, screeds of enthusiastic press for the new Cosworth-tuned Focus RS, and continuing strong sales for the Ranger ute have all added some sparkle, but for local Ford dealership owner Lindsay West, the top honour in the trophy case has to be an excellence award for his Dargaville-based team. It’s further proof that despite all the hard work put in by Ford engineers, designers, racing drivers, pit crew and event organisers, at the end of the day it’s the locals working at a ‘grass roots’ level who really carry on Henry Ford’s vision of motoring. ¢

WINNER FOR MAY:DALLAS DREADON

Conquering the red desertu by Andy Bryenton

The Australian outback. A sun-baked wilderness of brutal temperatures, insidious red dust and hidden mineral wealth. Digging this bounty from the earth and, indeed, undertaking any kind of endeavour other than sheer survival here — takes tough machines, and even tougher lubricants to keep them going.

The unique challenges of the red desert often proved too much for conventional engine oils made for the more civilised climes of Europe and America.

So, in 1975, a new company was formed to tackle the problem. They were called Anglomoil, and their solution was to blend high quality synthetic additives with base oil in a way which guaranteed full protection for engine parts, even under the dual hammer blows of searing heat and invasive dust. Sometimes cheaper oils may cite certain operating parameters on the bottle, but struggle to go the distance under demanding conditions.

Anglomoil’s product is designed to meet and exceed those parameters, long after the first turn of the ignition. Needless to say, the successful Anglomoil formula was adopted very enthusiastically.

Industries from road freight to mining to agriculture and heavy industry saw a massive drop in repair downtime as the new lubricant out-lasted previous choices, protecting moving parts of expensive machinery.

Four decades and counting, and the Anglomoil company continues to innovate, creating specialist oils for many niche markets — but their core business is still creating the very best oils for demanding conditions. To prove their point, their products have been

tested and used in powerful motorsport challenges, from racing big rig trucks to offshore powerboats and more.

But the real testament to their success is from their working customers, who have come to rely on Anglomoil in their tractors, diggers, trucks and implements.

Now Anglomoil has come to New Zealand, facing different environmental challenges with the same kind of attitude which first saw them conquer the red desert.

From the heavy acidic peat dust of the Waikato to the black ironsands of the west coast, we have our own insidious particulates. Though we may not have blazing heat, we have extremes of cold and damp which the outback never did. All of these conditions cry out for a superior oil, and Anglomoil have proven their worth to customers such as Gavins Agricultural Contractors on the Hauraki plains. How convinced are they?

With 150 pieces of plant machinery, they were spending $150,000 on repairs and maintenance to keep the fleet operating at harvest time.

In their own words: “Changing to Anglomoil means we can trust our fleet, we get more work done and a lot quicker, our customers are happier, we meet our deadlines, our operating costs have dropped considerably and we are in a position to take on more work. We are now looking seriously at

extending our service intervals for changing parts because of the big

reduction in wear and the fact that we now have zero failure.” ¢

TE ROROA WHATU ORA & MANAWHENUA TRUSTSPROHIBITION (RĀHUI) NOTICE FOR THE ISSUING OF

PERMITS TO HARVEST TOHEROAA Hui was held at Te Houhanga Marae, Dargaville in August 2014 to discuss the serious decline of Toheroa on Ripiro beach. The decision was made to place a rāhui on the taking of Toheroa on Ripiro beach from Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki stream to help revive the critically depleted beds.

Notice is hereby given by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Manawhenua Board that there will be no issuing of permits to harvest Toheroa due to the decline and reducing stock numbers.

Te Roroa excercises their manawhenua and customary authorities over their area.

In this instance from the Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki south Māhuta

This rāhui has NOT been lifted.

Taylor, Pamela NaomiThe family of Pam would like to

sincerely thank everyone for the love and support you have given us on

her passing. Please accept this as a personal acknowledgement.

Daniel William Walters "Blackie"With a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness Piki, Harry, Louanne, Melanie & Mandy & The extended Walters family would like to take the time to be grateful and thank everyone for their continued love support and condolences with the passing of our beloved "Blackie". He was a very humble man and would have been extremely honoured to have the send off he did. We as a family cannot express our gratitude and appreciation enough.

To the community at large. Businesses, schools, rugby clubs and the many friends of Blackie. We thank you for your generous donations of time, machinery, equipment, marquees, seating and tables, food baking and Koha. Thank you

The Maori wardens - We thank you for organising the traffic and parking from day one, from bringing dad home to traffic and parking at the marae among other things. Thank you

We would especially like to thank our close family and friends and the Oturei Marae Committee who worked tirelessly throughout the week long tangi from a place of love to keep our Manuhiri fed both at our home and the Marae. We are personally forever grateful as you went above and beyond for us, thank you for taking that stress off our hands so that we could mourn our beloved husband/father/grandfather/brother and uncle.

Last but not least thank you for the many condolence cards and floral tributes that we are still receiving. As many addresses are unknown we kindly ask that you please accept this as a personal thank you.

With that said, we would like to leave you with the kind and fitting words from the great team at the volunteer fire brigade, "You will be leaving a huge void in this town and will be sorely missed by those that have crossed your path". "Your final whistle has blown. Rest easy Blackie"
