AlcoholWhen alcohol is consumed, it's absorbed into a person's

bloodstream. From there, it affects the central nervous system (the

brain and spinal cord), which controls virtually all body functions.

Alcohol actually blocks some of the messages trying to get to the

brain. This alters a person's perceptions, emotions, movement, vision,

and hearing.

Signs To Find A Drunk Driver• Weaving in and out of lanes• Keeps face close to windshield• Drives off the road• Swerving or turning suddenly• Stopping for no reason in middle of traffic• Following other cars too closely• Ignoring traffic signals• Sudden speeding up or slowing down• Driving without headlights

Consequences of Drinking and Driving

• Get a ticket• Have to pay large fines• Lose your license• Total your car• Do many hours of community service• Insurance company cancels policy• DUI (Driving while under the Influence)• May hurt or kill someone or yourself• Maybe charged with a felony (Jail Time)

• Texting while driving• Loud music• Electronic games• Other teens in the car• Eating or drinking• Putting make-up on• Talking on your cell phone

Statistics

• In 2003, 25% of drivers ages 15-20 who died in car crashes were intoxicated.

• An average of 3 teens are killed each day after making the choice of driving after drinking.

• Drinking and driving is the #1 killer of young Americans ages 15-20.

Statistics Cont.• The first 500 miles a person drives are the most

dangerous.

• Teens are 10 times more likely than adults to crash during this period.

• By the end of high school at least 80% of students have tried alcohol. ( 4 out of every 5 students)

Why are Teens at Risk

• Teens face more risks than any other age groups.

• They lack driving experience.• They are more likely to react improperly to

sudden problems on the road.• More likely to run red lights, do illegal

turns, and actions.• Risks for accidents increase when teen

drivers have younger passengers.

Teen drinking and driving relates to the book Twisted because in the book after the party was broken up, Chip was going to drive him, Bethany and Parker home drunk. Tyler did not want them to get hurt so he takes Chip’s keys and drives them all home.
