NPOTAMany clubs have been discussing the National Parks On The Air event and how their club can participate. Kansas has 5 park sites and 5 trails for you to operate from. Some are easier to work from than others. You could think of them as domestic expeditions. Here’s a link to the ARRL site where you can learn more: https://npota.arrl.org

A new school club has been formed at Olathe North High School. Contact is Adam- KE0EXZ email: [email protected]

Hiawatha ARC was invited to Hiawatha Middle School to address all the science classes. They went over what Ham Radio is and how it is used when there are natural disasters well as a little propagation theory. They even made some contacts through the club’s repeater. KB0FVP and KC0CCR made the presentation at the school while KC0CIO, N0ECP, W0MSC, KC0RMJ and KB0WOG operated from their respective QTHs. AF0I was thepoint of contact with the school.

K-Link linked repeater system has a net on Saturday nights at 9PM. Hosted by Chuck-N0MXI from Minneapolis, the network is comprised of not only the K-Link but also Central Region Intertie System of Western Missouri. Check-ins are taken by region and all stations afterwards. Dial up your local K-Link station and see who else is there.

The Kansas Antenna Club In Johnson County Participated in Antarctic Week for the 6th year. With their call sign of K0ANT the club is part of the Worldwide Antarctic Program. Club members operated from their own shacks during the week and on the Saturday set up at Kansas City’s Zoo. Club members operated two HF transceivers Field Day style and offered a very nice QSL card. The 9:1 balun and a length of wire is a favorite antenna of the club and it was put into service this year for the event. The main purpose of Antarctic Week is to bring awarenessto the work of the scientific community at Antarctica.

Santa Fe Trail continues outfitting a trailer for communication service.Their goal is to have it ready for this year’s Field Day.

100 years of Ham Radio in Shawnee, Ks100 years of Ham Radio in Shawnee.

Information needed: Central Radio Association====================================

A personal story from KØIP

Thanks for giving me just a minute of your time to brag just a bit. April 4 marks 100 years of Ham Radio in my family, and in Shawnee Kansas..

At the link below, there is a picture of a "Central Radio Association" certificate, its 100 years old it was my grandfathers, Wilson Fremont Jones He was assigned the call FJ .... Sometime while he was in High School, he built a 3 tube receiver. I know because when I was going to Hocker Grove I took it apart, Ouch! (I am sorry, young and stupid, I still have the tubes and sockets, it would be a treasure now) I don't know about his transmitter, I'm guessing some kind of spark gap device. a 1/2" coil ??

My mother suspects that Fremont and his best friend, Carl Goddard, were both involved in radio experiments. Carl lived on the next farm south on Nieman road. Later, Carl owned Goddard Electric in Shawnee in the 1920's & 30's. Both Fremont and Carl dropped out of High School to join the Navy when WW1 broke out.

Anyway here’s a link to a picture of the certificate, and more information.

Please take a look... maybe you have some information about this organization, The ARRL never heard of them (?) especially anyone in Chanute, you might know H. B. Williams descendants, they might know something?

<http://www.pocatelloarc.org/k0ip/pic/CentralRadio.htm>

If you have any information about the Central Radio Association, please contact me at <[email protected]>. or call 208 251-6441 I have to admit, there was a 46 year gap between this event an me getting a Novice license in1962

Letters to the Editor

u Larry,

Please post these instructions from Mike AB0X

Please announce to the group that people wanting cards checked should load their DXCC contacts to be checked into ARRL DXCC on Line system at the ARRL Web page and bring their print out and cards to the hamfest. No fees or return postage have to be collected this way and it is much cheaper for them. A stamped envelope to send the forms to the ARRL is required, also! We have no budget for stamps. AC0A, Bill, and I will be the ARRL DXCC checkers for the KCDXC. Anyone with questions on DXCC Card Checking can email me prior to the Hamfest at [email protected] . A diamond in the rough, Jack Rowlett was a brilliant and loyal doctor, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a constant friend. Rarely a dull moment, “Dr Jack” or “Doc” or “Grandpa” as he was most commonly referred, created a joyful atmosphere where laughter was abundant in his presence. Nothing was ever too much trouble or out of the realm for Dr. Jack’s role as a physician. A good old country doctor, there are countless stories about how he took incredible and selfless out-of-the-ordinary strides to get a patient to safety orto deliver a baby. In fact, delivering several hundred (at least) babies in Paola was not only one of his proudest accomplishments; it was also his most common topic with locals around town. Reminiscing his doctor days brought so much joy to him, as did hearing community members say “You delivered my baby, Doc! ” It only

makes sense that his life work as a small town doctor was his calling, as he decided he wanted to be a doctor in the fourth grade after reading the book “The Horse and Buggy Doctor” by Arthur E. Hertzler. Jack was born June 6, 1921 in Oil Hill, Kansas. He was the oldest of three children born to Crayton and Carolee (Gowan) Rowlett. He grew up in Madison and McPherson, Kansas and graduated from McPherson High School in 1938. He entered the U. S. Army Air Force August 5, 1942. He was in the 8th and 9th air force division. He participated in the 86th fighter bomber squadron, 310th bomber squadron and the 354th fighter wing. He was honorably discharged as Major Jack Rowlett on January 30th, 1946. Jack was united in marriage to Elizabeth Victoria Johnson on February 20, 1943 in Bossier City, Louisiana. Together they lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Lawrence, Kansas; and Overland Park, Kansas before making theirhome in Paola, in 1953. Jack and Elizabeth together became the proud parents of three children. Over their 61 years of marriage, we were witness to their strong bond. Most of the time we saw two parts making up greater than a whole, with lots of teasing between the two and of course, copious laughter. Constantly at least one dog in the family, usually named Buddy, their dogs provided an even deeper love and delight in the home. Jack received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa following his service in WW II. He then attended Medical School at the University of Kansas and graduated in 1952. He completed hisresidency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri before starting his practice in Paola, in 1953. Jack and medical school classmate, Rex Stanley, started their practice in the first floor of an old house on South Silver Street, on what is now the north parking lot of the Dairy Queen. Soon, they built a new building and startedthe Miami County Clinic on Hospital Drive. Both Dr. Rowlett and Dr. Stanley retired in 1997. Jack served his community as Paola City Councilman from 1972 to 1979 the Paola Mayor from 1979 to 1981. He had enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, HAM radio, flying and reading. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, who died January 7, 2005. Jack had one brother, Charles William Rowlett of Dallas, Texas, who has also passed away, and one sister, Mary Lou Bledsoe, who still lives with her husband, Donald, in Austin, Texas. He is survived by three children, Jack Rowlett II and his wife Nancy of Paola, Jane Ball of Overland Park, Kansas, and Charles Rowlett and his wife Donna of Centerville, Kansas. Jack has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Jack Rowlett loved, lived, and worked hard. His legacy will live on through the critical influence he created by loving his family, friends and patients. A larger-than-life existence, we will miss him greatly. Due to Jack and Lib’slife-long affection for dogs, his memorial fund will support Olive's Hope Pet Rescue. There will be a celebration of life visitation 1:00 – 3:00 p. m. My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go.

Ate salad for dinner! Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza.

How to prepare Tofu:

1. Throw it in the trash.

2. Grill some Meat.

I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a spider web.

I don't mean to brag but......I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Senility has been a smooth transition for me.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero out they closed school?

Me neither.

I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented....I forgot where I was going with this.

I love being over 70. I learn something new every day.......and forget 5 others.

u A woman wrote to tech support, and their reply is a stroke of genius... This young woman is no different from the rest of us; both family happiness and heartbreak are familiar to her. She is simply looking for an answer to her questions. How do you maintain a relationship? How do you bring back the excitement of the first date? She wrote a letter to the tech support to find her answers. She sent the letter as a joke and only remembered about it when she suddenly received an email notification with a response. Dear Tech Support,Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as: Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as: NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed,Desperate Dear Desperate, "First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System. Please enter command: I thought you loved me.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Farting and Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the backgroundthat will eventually seize control of all your system resources.) In addition, please, do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applicationsquickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Lingerie 7.7. Good Luck!”Tech Support

u After retiring, a former Gunnery Sergeant in the Canadian Army took a new job as a high school teacher. Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a light plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn't noticeable when he wore his suit coat. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-ass punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former soldier, were leery of him and he knew they would be testinghis discipline in the classroom. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. With a strong breeze blowing it made his tie flap. He picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. Dead Silence. The rest of the year went smoothly.

u Anybody even CONSIDERING heading this way, needs to stop, turn around, and go home. I'm 25 miles South of Denver, and we have 12" of level snow, 2 & 3 foot drifts, with winds at 25-35 kts, gusting to 50 kts. I-70 is closed from East Denver (Aurora) all the way to Kansas, and radar shows the storm has reached past Goodland. I'm sure the skiing is great, but don't do it on 4, 6, or 18 rubber tires - bad idea.

u I'll be running inverted sideband... it's generated when you operate air-cooled tubes underwater, so that the electrons experience a form of cryogenic cooling, which enables them to achieve weightlessness.. In the insuingpassage of the yet-to-be balanced-modulation of the aforementioned carrier, the signal gets inverted, so that youmust use a BYPRODUCT detector... available at Ace Hardware for only $9.95... special discount for those who present an invalid amateur license... or a valid dog license.

u Pardon the vertical orientation... got this tag out of an S-22R receiver, purchased from an estate. The tag dates from 1935, when Bill Halligan bought Echophone. The EP plant was located at the 2611 Indiana address, and gave Hallicrafters a factory building, from which to grow. Tom

u http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rg4wpw/date.html#others This website first appeared on Larry's List out of Kansas City. Strangely, Kenwood, ICOM, & Yaesu are NOT in alphabetical order - they're at the top of the list. I've attached a WORD doc with what the pins DO on Kenwood & ICOM (made an interface box, so I can use Kenwood-wired mics on my ICOM stuff without changng plugs) Tom

I am repeating this, as the previous attempt to convert Word to plain text apparently did not work so well for some of you. So, I have retyped it. Hopefully, this is OK. Tom went to a lot of work on this; I wants to see maximum amount of folks get good out of it. Larry, W0AIB

Good stuff from Barry.

I have Kenwood AND Icom rigs and didn't want to change plugs on the mics. So I madea box that you plug Kenwood connectors INTO and you get an ICOM plug out, replete with "up/down" buttoms that work the right way. Better and CHEAPER than the MFJ junque. The attachment shows which pin does what on the two brands.

Tom Dailey, [email protected]

Microphone Pin-Outs:

KENWOOD

1. Mic Audio 2. Push to Talk (PTT) 3. Freq. DOWN 4. Freq UP 5. n/c 6. n/c 7. Mic Ground 8. Ground ref.

ICOM

1. Mic Audio2. n/c3. Freq DOWN & UP4. n/c5. Push to Talk (PTT)6. Ground ref.7. Mic. Ground8. n/c

Notes:

On MOST newer radios, chassis ground is NOT common ground. Check your manual (and your ohmmeter). Mic. Ground appears to be the same as ground ref., but I keep them separate, anyway.

Page 24: Kansas Amateur Radio - ksarrl.org · “KAR” Kansas Amateur Radio ... Happy listening. 73, Ken Blair, KC0GL By the way, Ken is the originator of KAR back when it was a real magazine

Using newer radios with older Heathkit amplifiers requires a separate FET or relay trigger for the amp, in order to keep the grounds separate, thus NO voltage potential between the equipments.

*On ICOM radios, frequency UP & DOWN is accomplished with the same pin (3). The UP function shorts Pin 3 to ground; the DOWN function shorts Pin 3 THROUGH a 470 ohm resistor, thence to ground.

u As a Past Master of my Masonic Lodge and Past Commander of a Knights Templar Commandery, I can honestly tell you the WONDERFUL WORK the Shrine does. They give kids a chance whom otherwise would have NONE. Their burn centers pioneer work that others thought impossible, and they've not just saved lives, but saved HOPE in those who've deal with the horrors of severe burns. Yes, EVEN THOUGH I live in Colorado, I'm a "Kansas City Boy" and try to make the 'bash whenever I can. I encourage YOU to do the same - GO TO THE HAMBASH!!. Oh, and those fellas with the "funny hats" (the Fez)? If you see a bowl, can, or vessel into which you can throw a buck or three... DO IT. They don't get any of it - it goes to the hospitals.. straight away.
